I loved the 90s. The 90s was my TIME. My most important teenage years took place between 1997 and 1999 – I experimented with hair mascara (and boys), wore a Slipknot hoody, swapped Bliss for Elle Girl and watched many, many rom coms. Back then, fashion blogging was still a twinkle in Susie Bubble‘s eye and magazine editorials were far too serious, so all my style inspiration came from music and movies.

I went through phases – in 1997 I was obsessed with The Spice Girls and wore stacked Buffalo platform trainers with embellished jeans and slogan tees. After watching Clueless for the first time I took up pleated skirts and knee high socks. Then came my The Craft inspired goth phase, complete with heavy eyeliner and swathes of black lace. The 90s was the decade of the fad and my friends and I always participated – from Cleopatra’s goggles to All Saints and their baggy cargo pants.

I think today’s outfit has a distinct 90s vibe. Maybe it’s the preppy shirt-and-jumper (so Cruel Intentions) or the pointy court shoes (very Posh Spice). All I know is I’ve spent all day looking up my favourite 90s film quotes and reciting Shaznay’s rap from Never Ever. Can we have the 90s back, please?

Do you remember the 90s? Which trends sum up the decade for you? And can you name the film that’s inspired today’s post title? 10 points to the first correct answer!

Ahhhh love it! You ARE totally rufus – Which is from Never been kissed by the way! πŸ™‚ Love that film – One of my faves!

Me and my friends had a “Craft/goth” phase and used to quote the film all the time whilst we were at lower 6th haha!

Great look!

Ah, the 90’s. I was overly influenced by Angela Chase and MSCL – my friends and I loved trying to recreate her style. And trying to find our very own Jordan Catalano!
{and is it not a never been kissed quote? – although wasn’t that a 2000’s film?}

I was a 90’s kid, I don’t think I’ll ever forget the Spice Girls or Slipknot hoodies! I love this paired with the leather skinnies, I always debate getting some but can’t decide if they would suit me or not. Your jumper looks really cosy too. PS. I’ve awarded you for the Versatile Blogger award lovely πŸ™‚

It’s Never Been Kissed isn’t it? Oh my word this post brought those 90’s memories flooding back! Crop tops and cargo pants and hair mascara! I had completely forgotten about the skirt over trousers ‘trend’ until I read Sophie’s comment. Why on earth did I ever think that was a good look?

Ah! The 90s…. Denim dungarees with a CND thong around neck and purple wallabees… Long white shirts and cropped fair isle jumpers… Black Box… Salt n Pepa… The Levellers… Dr Martins… 2Unlimited… The Big Breakfast… Jumpers from The Sweater Shop and Benetton. Could totally go on. Not a great decade for fashion or music but great memories.

You look ‘trick’ love (90s words…)

OMG to this entire post Jen, EVERYTHING is ringing bells with me. I was obsessed with The Craft and Clueless and of course the Spice Girls, I remember singing to them in the playground at primary school. And as for the title, love the phrase but hated the film hehe, I’m sort of take it or leave it with rom coms and never been kissed was not one of my favourites πŸ™‚

The shoes are very posh spice! She was always my favourite when I was younger, I always played her when we used to pretend to be the spice girls haha. I loved dungarees and bucket hats in the 90s and bright orange was my favourite colour. Ahh I do miss the 90s.

I watched Clueless just this weekend (best in bed with a cold pick me up ever) and was seriously lusting after the outfit Tai is wearing when she gets dangled over the railings in the mall. Crisp white shirt under candy pink jumper and matching pink and white check trousers. Totally S/S12

And how cute was Travis? He was in my top ten!

Oh Travis was a BABE! Although Dane Bowers from Another Level was (shamefully) my man in the 90s. Not in real life you understand…!

Tai is SO SS12. Those candy colours are everywhere right now!

I was a 90s kid! Ah, the Spice Girls. I owned a pair of silver platform trainers, and thought they were amazing. Really, they were dreadful.
I think Tammy was the ultimate shop for 90s kid fashion, anyone remember Tammy?
I love Clueless, so shall leave you with this quote.
“What the hell is that?”
“A dress.”
“Says who?”
“Calvin Klein!”

Hi, Jen

Love your post — and your look! I wanted to tell you about a novel that I’m about to publish called LOST IN THE ’90s. It’s about a kid from 2012 who travels back in time to April 1994 during the week that Kurt Cobain killed himself, and is chock-full of ’90s references from Blossom to Blink-182.

The book goes on sale 4/5/12. You can read more about it at http://www.facebook.com/lostinthe90s

Hope you will check it out and tell all your ’90s-loving pals!

You have literally described my life in the 90s. ELLE Girl..totally forgot about it until I saw you mention it in this post, I’m sure I still have my issues of it somewhere. The Craft! Clueless! Cruel Intentions! Still some of my most favourite films ever.

I had some hilarious green stacked platform shoes a la Spice Girls, that I actually thought made me the most stylish person ever…ahh good old days.

Great post, as always Jen.

Ah the 90’s, time of those mini butterfly clips from Claire’s and the fluffy bun scrunchie. πŸ™‚ Horrific.
I remember owning a Tammy tartan pleated mini, that I paired with a Tammy fluffy black short sleeve jumper and C&A shiny pearl coloured long sleeve blouse. I looked amazing….in my mind. Wore it to a disco and danced with a boy wearing Lynx Africa. And a loop earring in each ear. Lush.
LOVE this post Jen. xxx

OMG hair mascara…that takes me back big time!!

I remember ridiculously high ponytails with at least 5 scrunches holding them up, Timberland or CAT boots with 3 pairs of scrunched up socks, Helly Hansen and North Face waterproof jackets, glitter gel all over our faces, sticking a HUGE roller in my fringe, the terrifying list goes on……
