Blog Tip #1 – Be a Copywriter

Posted in Blogging, Writing.

Earlier this week I posted some SEO tips which went down really well, so I thought I’d share a few more snippets of advice for anyone looking to start a blog or improve their own. I’m not an expert, nor am I a professional blogger, but I do write for a living and most importantly – I write for brands. And writing for or about brands is an important part of fashion and beauty blogging. Which leads me nicely to my first tip…
blogging tips advice how to blog
Copywriting is one of the most useful skills a blogger can have. A copywriter’s job is to write copy (duh) for promotional materials. So we’re not talking magazine articles (that’s a journalist) or books (author), but TV ads, billboards, websites, flyers, brochures… the list is endless. A good copywriter will make a product sound so genuinely amazing you want to rush out and buy it immediately. They give brands personality, they make customers feel special, they capture attention and encourage action.

So how does all that relate to blogging? Well, one thing many copywriters can do really well is the ‘soft sell’. The days of ‘MASSIVE SAVINGS BUY IT NOW!’ are over – people don’t want to be bombarded with offers and forced into purchases. They do, however, want to read fun, engaging things about nice products they might quite like for themselves. And being able to write about a product in an honest way without being too ‘salesy’ is an invaluable skill for bloggers who do reviews.

There are also more practical benefits that come from getting to grips with copywriting. There’s zero room for spelling and grammar errors, so you’ll become obsessed with checking and rechecking your work. No one likes a waffly advert, so you’ll learn to edit your words until they’re sharp and concise. And you’ll absorb so much information when researching projects – everything from how interest rates are calculated to the lifespan of penguins – that you’ll absolutely KILL IT at pub quizzes.

I’m not saying you should retrain as a copywriter (especially if you’re actually, like, a doctor). But if you find yourself with an hour to kill, have a search online for articles on the basics of copywriting, or try writing a print ad for your favourite skincare product. There are loads of simple, easy-to-learn techniques that you can use to hone your writing and boost your blog. And with a bit of time and effort, you’ll never need to copy and paste a press release again.

I did some copywriting work not to long ago and actually really enjoyed it! I am studying Fashion Journalism but am definitely considering CW as a career choice. Thanks for the advice, Jen 🙂

I’ve just started out as a Copywriter and though I’m still learning and finding my ‘style’ I absolutely love it. The researching side of it is so much fun! 🙂

Jen, this is completely unrelated to this post – apologies if this is poor blog etiquette, I am new to all this! – but I just wanted to say how much I love your blog! I only discovered it a couple of weeks ago, but I have read up to way back when now, and I’ve loved seeing how it (and your style) has evolved. I can’t say anything others haven’t put more succinctly before, but I love how normal you seem and how easy it feels to connect with the things you post about. Anyway, gushing over – but well done, if you’re not sick of hearing that! x

I love these posts Jen, great advice.
I’ve done a little copyrighting here and there, and I love giving products personality and making readers want them but not shoving it down their throat.

Hi there! I’m following your blog for a while now – and I love it! I haven’t commented yet, but for this one I just totally agree. Especially for fashion bloggers copywriting is an important skill. You make is sound very easy, but I think it takes a lot of practice to actually be able to make a post about a brand sound genuine rather than ‘advertisy’…

I’m a copywriter and I love being able to show my skill! I am proud of the fact that I can write about different products and brands, for different audiences. There are so many badly written blogs out there which are basically disheartening because with a lot of people, it’s the person that counts, rather than the regurgitated press release, but we don’t get to see that very clearly. Plus I tend to avoid those kind of blogs for outreach and online PR opportunities 🙁

I’m babbling now, but it’s because I’ve been up since 5am and have a long day ahead of me!

I enjoyed this post! I’ve just rediscovered your blog – we used to follow each other back when I lived in Leeds – I moved to London about two years ago and I’m now, incidentally, a professional copywriter! 🙂 I’ve added you to Bloglovin’. I’ve recently restarted a blog again, I missed it too much!

I just recently started copywriting and I’m just taking it in too. I don’t have that certain method or skill yet but I’m learning as much as I can though. Thank you so much for this one.
