New year, new start, new clothes!

Gap cardigan, H&M tee, H&M jeans, vintage belt, Primark socks, Steve Madden boots, Accessorize necklace, Fossil bag

And the details...

Happy New Year everyone! I hope your NYE celebrations were fun – we stayed in with Amaretto and lemonades and Jools Holland’s Hootenanny. It was great to have a chilled out night to end the year.

2009 has been a year of change for me – I changed my hair, changed my job, changed my car, changed my home and changed my relationship status. It was the year I grabbed with both hands and made things better for me. I’ve never really been into New Year’s Resolutions because I think we should always be striving for a better, healthier, happier life, but I do have a few that relate directly to this blog…
1. Stop buying cheap clothes. I started this when I bought the Steve Madden boots above – they cost £105 (down from £150) but I know they’ll last and last. Documenting my outfits in this blog has made me realise just how much I spend on cheap clothes and how quickly they fall out of favour or fall apart. So now I’ll be buying less, but better.
2. Go vintage. I’ve added a few vintage pieces to my wardrobe in the last few months, and I want to keep doing this. Blogs including Cali Vintage have really opened my eyes to how wonderful vintage clothing can be.
3. Re-learn dressmaking and buy a sewing machine. I studied textiles for a few years and really loved it, but haven’t been near a sewing machine for a long time. I still know the basics but would love to start making clothes from patterns. I might ease myself back in with a cushion cover, though!
4. Continue to build A Little Bird and pinkplectrum. I want to improve my photography (which should be easier as the nights get lighter) and make more pretty jewels.
And my final resolution, which isn’t really a resolution at all, more of a life mantra, is…
5. Smile, laugh, have fun and be happy.
Here’s to a great 2010 – what are your goals for this brand new decade?

My main focus of 2010 is to be happy and healthy, but i so agree with number 1! i decided that about a month ago, and so far so good, but i will make exceptions for things like tights, you cant beat asda tights! xx

Look at all that green – SO AMAZING. Where I live, all I’ve been seeing is white, white, and white!

Good luck with all your resolutions. Excited to see all your (hopefully) future vintage finds 🙂

Thanks so much for stopping by!

Cute stuff!!

I know what you mean about the money.
I find I wear my most expensive pieces on a regular basis and they last forever. Basics can be cheap. But jeans, shoes, purses, I could spend a fortune!

those boots are absolute perfection,
I need to start saving money towards perhaps one investment purchase a year? on what I earn, that seems about right!

i love it! i made the no more cheap clothes vow as well… i’m cultivating a “french closet” fewer, but higher quality pieces.

this year one of my goals is to learn how to walk in high heels 🙂

Love all the photography here, I used to hoard so many cheap clothes, but relised it’s so much easier to own staple good quality items, that will last a lot longer 🙂

Hi Jen,
I’ve been following your blog for a little while and really love seeing your outfits.

Your resolutions sound great, especially 1 and 3 which ring true with me too. My resolution this year is to really get going on making my own clothes and customising plain or vintage things I buy. I look forward to seeing how you get on.

p.s. congratulations on your engagement!

What a beautiful cardigan, and what lovely photos. I agree, vintage is the way to go. I wear mostly thrifted and vintage items, and the overall effect is much more unique, I think. Just stumbled here via Leah’s blog–am really adoring your style!

Oh, I couldn’t agree more when it comes to the first resolution, what is the point in having tons of cheap clothes? “Let’s buy less, but, better”. This is something that I will definitely change this year too. The boots are to die for!! xoxo from Brazil 🙂

Really wonderful resolutions! you will gain so much by refraining from disposable clothing and going vintage! And those boots are really amazing and SOOO worth it! Sewing is something I would also like to work on more and your mantra is just the cherry on top of it all! Good luck with all of it! I just know that with as much change as you have made in 2009, 2010 is your year to really shine! So happy to have met you! You are an amazing woman!
