Left My Heart In… Bedford Lodge, Newmarket

Posted in Travel.

Last weekend Rob and I packed up the car, waved goodbye to the cat and made our way down the M1 to Newmarket in Suffolk. We’d been invited to stay at Bedford Lodge Hotel by Tesco Magazine, and after a hectic week of working we were both looking forward to some time away.

Bedford Lodge is just outside Newmarket town centre, tucked away from the road. As soon as we pulled up I was smitten – there are huge floral baskets everywhere, so the whole hotel just sings with colour.

After a quick tour of our lovely double room and some squealing over the Molton Brown bath products (me, not Rob), we made the most of the 32 degree sunshine and sat on the terrace for lunch. Toasted sandwiches, chips and Pimm’s – perfect.

Feeling bolstered by lunch, we walked into Newmarket – probably a bad idea in such humid weather – and arrived in the small town feeling decidedly sticky. But it was worth it, if only for all that bunting…

A swim and a soak in the Jacuzzi later and we were dressed and ready for dinner. G&Ts were followed by the most delicious three courses I’ve eaten in a while, and a fillet steak to rival the Holy Grail of fillet steaks (Butter in NYC). The meal was beautiful, the service was speedy and the night was warm, and by 11pm we were feeling very content (and sleepy… that’s what good food will do to you).

We decided against the cooked breakfast on Sunday morning and any thoughts of bacon sandwiches were forgotten when this continental delight arrived at our door. Warm croissants, crispy toast and fresh fruit quickly disappeared.

Sadly a car breakdown meant we couldn’t explore Cambridge as we’d planned, but even waiting for an AA mechanic wasn’t so bad on that gloriously sunny terrace. I could’ve happily stayed at Bedford Lodge another day, week… maybe even a month. There was an air of calm, plenty of gin and not a MacBook in sight – what more does a girl need?

My parents used to go to the gym at Bedford Lodge, I’ve been to the pool with my mum and it is a really lovely place. I admire how you’ve managed to make Newmarket look pretty as well haha, it is certainly not the most picturesque town, I always think people must find it such an anti-climax when they travel there for the races! You look absolutely lovely amongst all those flowers!

Ah Helen, I thought it was a cute little town! Lots of charity shops which is always a good thing in my book 😉
