If you’re currently growing out a short hairstyle, that is.
If – like me – you’re stuck somewhere between crop and mullet (or maybe you’re right in the middle of mullet territory – I feel for you, my friend. Wait for me, I’ll be there in three weeks), your hair routine is probably less about styling and more about damage control. You have weapons, not products. My arsenal includes thick, gelatinous wax, my own ears and – on a particularly desperate day – a hair clip shaped like a daisy.
There are a few options available to the short-haired-but-wants-to-be-long-haired girl. Hats are useful, but not particularly office appropriate and you should really take them off at the dinner table. Extensions, if you’re really that impatient and want to resemble a horse at dressage. Or scarves. A printed silk scarf, tied jauntily around the head a la Audrey, will at once mask your ridiculous Nick Berry hairdo and give you an air of sophistication not unlike Ms Hepburn herself. Well… maybe not if you’re lugging a basket round Tesco/hauling ass for the bus/carrying a Primark bag. But still.
Vintage trousers via charity shop, Topshop shirt, H&M sandals, Primark belt, Mango ring, leather satchel via car boot sale, vintage silk scarf via car boot sale
I stocked up on scarves at this morning’s car boot – I say, the more ridiculous the print, the better.
This is today’s choice. The British royal carriage print is very apt, don’t you think?
This beauty has a map of the Paris Metro on it. Pretty and practical.
The obligatory horse print. To be worn around the neck with a tweed jacket, jodhpurs and a tight smile.
oh these scarves are gorgeous, the paris one is particularly lovely. x
I love the paris scarf! x
These scarves are brilliant, I actually can’t decided which one I like best!!! Good luck with growing your hair out! I keep attempting to grow mine but every time it gets to a certain length I’m like yuck I don’t actually like it long so get it all chopped off again!!
Bow Dream Nation xx
LOVE the Paris map scarf!
That Paris one is lovely. Can beat a good scarf.

I love the Paris scarf!
I love the first two! You look gorgeous in those trousers also 😀 x
I love scarfs, I think charity shops are the best place to pick them up from but I can never get them to stay on my head, I think my curls push them off!xxx
You wear the scarf so well – I definitely would never have guessed you weren’t happy with the hair underneath.
I love vintage scarves – they’re usually so cheap to pick up and really pretty and individual.
Oh, these scarves are so pretty! I’m partial to the Paris one as well!
Love them all. I’m growing my hair out at the moment too & living in head scarfs and keeping a strong fringe until it’s gets some length in it.
which car boot did you go to? haha…
love the head scarf look!! I love your short crop thou! 🙂 hope your havin a nice break my dear! xo
Love your scarf collection – the royal carriage one is lovely! x
Brilliant scarves! The Paris print is beautiful. I’ve been wearing scarves in my hair more and more recently, they just lift my hair off my neck and feel lovely! x
You look stunning!
Last time I grew out my hair I transitioned from crop to Louise Brooks-esque bob. I kept having the back cut in, and just grew the top layers down which stopped the mullet thing going on. I’m back at the pixie crop at the moment though!
I’m a frequent ‘shoulder length to pixie crop alternator’.
I alway do as Cat above says. I have had mine long for about 3 years now which is a bit of a record.

I’ve missed you Jen! I love reading your blog. The scarfs are such a brilliant idea. Muahah! Almost evil genius brilliant. >:)

Great scarves! Good luck with growing your hair. I went though that horrid stage a few years ago. I had a cute pixie crop for a few years but after one too many ‘Thanks you Sir’ moments I decided long was best… my secret weapon? Bunches. Seriously, even in my early 30’s it was the only way for me. All I can say is that it is totally worth it when you can muster a ponytail for the first time!
i love you blog come check out mine and maybe follow ? xx 🙂

First thing I noticed was your trousers! They look AMAZING on you!
I love silk scarves. They really are the perfect accessory. You’re wearing it really well.
I’m officially taking notes from you now. I need some silk scarves to save my scary hairdo. 😉
Jen you look FAB in those trousers!
I kinda struggle with scarves as they slide out of my hair unless I tie them so tightly it hurts. Do you use hairclips to keep them in place?
Gorgeous scarves Jen, and the one you’ve tied around your growing hair looks fab!
It’s a nightmare, especially going from really short to longer styles. Looking forward to seeing more styles as it grows. 🙂

Love the collection of headscarves! They just don’t seem to suit me, I don’t know if its because of my fringe…

I’m in that stage now! However, top tip – when you get your hair cut, ask for the back to be ‘cut under’ (e.g. they shave it in slightly) and voila! No mullet 🙂
Completely argree about scarves, also elasticated headbands are fab. I tuck my hair under it to make it thinner so I don’t have a helmet on my head. Curse you thick hair….

I did the louise brooks brooks bob while growing out my pixie crop as well. It didn’t last very long, because my hair tends towards waviness as it grows out. It’s just gotten long enough to pull back now. I have a small collection of silk scarves, but I can never get them to stay on my head.
yesss that is EXACTLY the stage I’m at with hair growth. it’s horrendous. i do love a scarf or 5.
you look great!

the Paris scarf is actually amazing! love it. xx
The Paris scarf is awesome! Although I’m nowhere near mullet territory (thank goodness!) I’m a big fan of the silk scarf in the hair :o)
HAHAHA! I so agree with you. Your post is really entertaining! 🙂 I learned something too..

i love a silk scarf. I’ve got a few but have been struggling to find really cute prints, yours are amazing! I’m going to have to start looking harder for a car boot near me… X
