How To Wear An Oversized Chunky Knit Jumper

Posted in Daily Outfits, Fashion.

Usually, ‘chunky’ is a word I don’t want to associate with my upper body. Chunky is not flattering. Chunky is not chic. So why, then, am I so enamoured with the chunky knit jumper? Maybe it’s the weather, or my tendency to go into hibernation for the first two months of the year. Whatever it is, I find myself casting aside my form-fitting dresses and cute cardigans in favour of an abundance of wool.

As the name suggests, chunky knit jumpers are tricky to wear because they can make you look a little… well, chunky. All that extra bulk can pad out your shoulders, giving you a distinct Dwayne Jonhson vibe. And no one wants that. Fortunately, after weeks of trial and error and more than my fair share of fashion faux pas, I’ve devised a strategy for successfully styling the chunky knit…

H&M jumper and necklace, Zara jeans, bag and flats c/o Sarenza, Topshop ring

  • Balance out an oversized top with skinny jeans – roll them up to just above the ankles for extra leg-lengthening loveliness
  • Layer underneath with a long sleeve tee rather than wearing a coat, which will add more bulk
  • Wear delicate flats or heels, not big boots or trainers
  • Add detail to a plain jumper with a statement necklace
  • Keep a sense of proportion by pairing your oversized jumper with a small bag
Are you a fan of the oversized chunky knit? How do you wear yours?

I like chunky knits but agree it’s best to wear them with skinny jeans for a flattering look!

I live in chunky knits and always buy the biggest possible jumper, and skinniest possible jeans to create the illusion of slimmer pins. Best time of year to buy a chunky knit too as there are a lot in the sales, and bigger sizes are sometimes all that is left which is perfect for me. And I also try not to wear a coat over the top – not only is it unflattering, I can never fit my chunky sleeves in!

Great tip! Will definitely keep an eye on the sales for more chunky knits (not that I need to add to my collection!).

You are the queen of the statement necklace! I’m a newish follower to your blog and it’s slowly making me realise my wardrobe is seriously lacking in this area!

Oversized knit jumpers are my life right now.My actual life.. so comfy! I always wear mine with skinny jeans and ballet flats, and always with my hair down because an up do makes my head look tiny with this combo x

Oh of course, of course! My ‘how to wear’ posts are totally tongue-in-cheek as I don’t consider myself a style expert by any means. Plus the titles are mainly for search purposes – I get lots of hits from people searching ‘how to wear…’ 😉

Great tips! I do like a chunky knit but at 5’1 they’re not really the most flattering choice for me. I always pair mine with leggings and will definitely try carrying a smaller handbag next time so that I don’t look like I’m being swamped by my clothing! x

I just bought a lovely one in the sales from warehouse, i wear with skinnies too. But I also wear with boots because my feet would freeze in flats this time of year. Pretty sure flats and socks don’t go either 😉

I think a nice pair of riding boots would look great – I was thinking more of massive workman’s boots in my tips 😉

I like to wear my Grandads old bowls jumper with a little check mini and leggings, but I always end up changing before I go out because it means so much to me but I know I am bound to spill just about anything on it. 🙁
