The Kate Middleton Dress

Posted in Daily Outfits, Fashion.

Kate Middleton isn’t really on my style radar. I like her, sure – she’s got that classic English Rose look and I’m sure she’d be a delight at afternoon tea. Not that I’ve ever had afternoon tea, but I imagine it’s just fabulous.

She’s captivated the world with her bouncy hair and shiny teeth, and she’s done wonders for British fashion by wearing homegrown designs from LK Bennett, Reiss and McQueen all over the world. But… she’s a bit boring. Just a little. I’m not sure how experimental a high profile royal can be  (although Beatrice and Euginie seem to get away with it), but seriously – another blue wrap dress? Courts, again? Sometimes I wish she’d whack on the Litas, ombré her hair and get spotted dancing on a table somewhere in Shoreditch.

I was charity shopping in Brighton a few weeks ago when a peek of polka dot blue caught my eye. I grabbed it off the rail to get a better look – a very classic royal blue polka dot wrap dress. So Kate. So Refined. So boring. But being the busty-and-hippy type, I knew the shape would suit me and at £3.99 I could hardly leave it behind (it’s this way of thinking that’s left me with a gigantic ‘to eBay’ pile). So I snapped it up and brought it home with me, thinking it’d go the way of those vintage leather shorts and the slightly-too-small embroidered bed jacket.

But…

It’s a keeper, isn’t it? Sometimes classic just works. Dresses like this can add years and look frumpy, but a few neon accessories, some clever belting and a cute pair of ankle boots give the style a modern edge and move it away from granny territory.

I love to see Kate try something like this with one of her classic dresses – I think she’d really rock a statement necklace and her feet are crying out for an alternative to those mid-heel courts.

What about you – do you like Ms Middleton’s style? How would you spice up the classic wrap dress?

This dress looks great on you. I do think that Kate Middleton looks really put together but she’s not really a style inspiration for me, aside from not being tall and super skinny I prefer a bit of a younger, edgier look. And I do wish she’d stop wearing those nude court shoes! x

I love Kate’s style, she does always seem to opt for classic pieces but they really work and she always looks so glam! I agree that adding some accessories can really help to style the dress and made it a bit more edgy!

I actually love her style!!! But I do find it a bit too prim and proper for myself – well its not as if I have any royal engagements!!
Totally agree though, that everyone needs some classic pieces in their wordrobe.

This is a lovely dress 🙂 Although her style isn’t ‘me’, I do like how K-Middy dresses, it’s appropriate to her royal role whilst still being stylish. x

Totally agree, she is lovely and always looks polished and chic but I really wish she’d try something a little more ‘cool’. She’s only 30!! I was lucky enough to see her in the flesh at the Garden Party in Buckingham Palace and even my husband commented that while her dress was pretty it was made of ‘old lady material’..

I do like her style but yes, she is a touch boing. Though really, a future queen can only wear classic ”lady -like” things – she wouldn’t want old pictures coming back to haunt her!
I love your dress, you most definitely do rock it. The boots are fab too 🙂 xo

ah the old kate debate… agree she’d be a boring old hag of a dresser in our world, but in her job? her style is perfect for it.
Love this dress styled with the boots 🙂 x

I have to say, I do love Kate’s style – especially when she’s dressed more casually because it’s similar to what I’d (like to!) wear. I love your style too, though!xx

I like that she’s decent and not some kinda Jordan woman.

BUT she is very conservatively dressed i.e. no FUN.

Like your dress except for the batwing sleeves which have never appealed to me. Bargain though.

Love the styling and certainly a keeper!

I suppose she has never said she wants to be a style icon and the only press she ever gets is on what she is wearing. Maybe she wants to be taken seriously in her ‘job’ and any sort of funky dressing would fuel the fire… possibly.

What a bargain Jen – I love the sleeves! They are very flattering and give this classic dress a something special. Love the outfit (and your inspiring me to give the colour of these boots a go).

I agree, she’s a tad dull but I like that she choses British brands where she can and that she wears her outfits a few times and even shares with her mum.
Love this dress, you got a bargain!

I like it – does it have pockets? The soft pleats in the skirt are nice. I’m really into kimono/batwing sleeves like these ones, they’re flattering on nearly everyone.

That dress looks great on you!
I agree, Kate seems like a really nice women but her style is getting a bit samey! I would give my right arm to see her in litas with ombre hair! xx

I am loathe to say I like something middletonesque, but this dress is gorgeous! I love how you’ve used your accessories to bring it right up to date.

She dresses 10 years older than she is 😐 so I’m not sure why everyone hearts her?! Sure a lovely dress like this is fine… once in a while! Like you wear it. But every week?! xo

I think Kate is lovely but just plays it safe a bit. I suppose everyone has a style but she could do with a bit of variety – loved it when she wore some strappy sandals a while back! Her hair infuriates me when it is down, looks so much better in an updo. xx

I love how you have accessorised this, it looks great! I do like her classic style but I doubt she would get away with anything too exciting!

Personally, I find Kate’s style intensely boring. I think she is probably a bit restricted though.

This dress is gorgeous! You’ve styled it just right to funk it up without losing it’s classic-ness. I know that’s not a word.
£3.99 too! Definitely a winner.
