The thing about glasses is, they draw attention to your face. Particularly if you’re fond of bold frames, like me. I often get compliments on my glasses, which is lovely, but reminds me that people look at my face. A lot. And so I’m conscious of making it look as good as possible – starting with skin.
I’ve been fanatical about skincare since my teens, when a bout of acne left me miserable (and scarred). Good skin starts with cleansing but this is about makeup, so today’s ‘class’ is all about creating that perfect face.
Even though my skin is relatively clear these days, I still prefer full coverage foundation. Even after all this time (we’re talking 10 years since my last acne outbreak – thank you forevs, contraceptive pill) I’m still self-conscious about my skin and dark under-eye shadows. So, every day I use:
- Primer – essential for providing a smooth base for foundation, controlling shine and helping makeup stay in place all day. I use Benefit’s The Porefessional.
- Foundation – for evening skin tone, covering scars and blemishes and filling open pores. I use Estée Lauder Double Wear in Ecru, applied with a Real Techniques Foundation Brush for a flawless finish.
- Concealer – to make dark circles, blemishes, scars and redness disappear (or thereabouts). I use Bobbi Brown Corrector in Light to Medium Bisque followed by Bobbi Brown Creamy Concealer in Ivory under my eyes, using a brush to apply and my fingers to pat into place. Around my nose and on my chin, I use Rimmel’s Hide the Blemish in Ivory.
- Powder – for oily skins like mine, setting powder is a must to stop makeup sliding down your face by 11.30am. I use Mac’s Mineralize Skin Finish Powder in Medium, applied with a Real Techniques Powder Brush and topped up whenever I’m looking slightly shiny.
- Blusher – the final frontier in my quest for flawless, radiant skin is a bright cream blusher. I find cream formulas look much more fresh and natural than powders and last longer. I use Topshop’s Cream Blush in Neon Rose.

I find Rimmel’s Protect and Perfect by far the best primer I’ve tried – and at £6, pots and pots cheaper than MAC, Laura Mercier, etc.

I can’t find anything better than Double Wear for covering my acne scars and making me look human. It’s a pain to take off though!

Thanks Elly! I used a Remington Pearl wand to roughly curl it, then scrunched it with wax and put it in a ponytail! Simple as that 🙂

You can go the uber cheap primer route and use milk of magnesia (yes the indigestion stuff) 🙂
I personally have combination skin and don’t find liquid foundation (even double wear) would stay on my face. I’ve switched to mineral make up and never looked back 🙂
You look lovely, your skin looks flawless! I don’t really wear foundation/powder, and I don’t ever wear blusher, regardless of whether or not I’m wearing my glasses, so I have no make-up tips really! xx

You look lovely! I have pretty good skin, aside from open pores on my nose. I went through a big off phase with makeup because I kept getting spots and couldn’t find the right shade of foundation, but I am a complete convert to the Rimmel shade matching service at Boots where they scan your skin. It’s amazing, it now really doesn’t look like I’m wearing foundation, even in bright sunlight. And my skin seems to be holding up ok too.
Otherwise my good skin tips (from my 36 year vantage point and still getting ID’d) is big sunglasses, shade and regular orgasms! (sorry, but really!)

I found this blog post really helpful. Thanks lady! I get mega dark circles under my eyes and I often avoid my glasses as I feel it exacerbates them. I definitely need to put more stock in primer. I can also recommend Laura Mercier’s Secret Camouflage concealer which is really good x

Great post, your skin looks flawless. I find that wearing glasses makes my under-eye circles more noticeable, I’m using Bourjois Healthy Mix at the moment but definitely want to try the Bobbi Brown Corrector and Benefit’s Erase Paste. x

As a glasses wearer I am loving these posts! I always feel like my glasses hide my make up and it annoys me!
Loving this series of posts! One problem I find though is that my foundation rubs off all over the bridge of my glasses and I end up having to wipe it off – and have a gap in my make-up where it’s worn away! But, that said, I scrimp on make-up a lot and don’t often bother with primer so I might try and add that into my daily routine!
