Wearing this dress makes even a horrible, rainy day like today feel happy and sunny and ever so cheerful.

When it comes to feeling positive, the simplest of things can turn my frown upside down. A glass of OJ in the morning, for example. Or discovering three unwatched episodes Project Runway on my planner. Getting unidentified packages in the post, a hug from the Mr and trying out a new breakfast cereal all rate highly on the happiness scale. These small, seemingly insignificant things that make up my everyday are the things that really matter – and most of the time, I don’t even notice.

What makes you happy on a less-than-sunshiny day? A new pair of shoes? Fabulously applied mascara? Or something altogether less shallow, like the sound of singalong birds, or freshly mown grass? I’d love to know!

The Mr and I don’t really celebrate Valentine’s Day that much, but sometimes it’s just nice to recognise the things that make you smile when you wake up, things that make horrible days bearable, things that make you daydream through a boring meeting. Hope you’re all loving something, someone, somewhere today.

Yesterday, whilst in Boots, I picked up a new deodorant. Instead of choosing a ‘shower fresh’ scent, I chose ‘powder fresh’. Turns out, it smells just like old ladies. So today I’m channelling my grandmother with this scarf knotted about my neck in a decidedly elderly way. What do you think? Love or loathe?

I wanted to give you a quick catch up on The Fashion Diet and how it’s going. Despite my tiny thrifting trip, I haven’t bought a single scrap of clothing since the ban was imposed. Okay… so it actually hasn’t been that long. It seems like an age but it’s not. Bugger.

Anyway, today’s outfit just goes to show how simple it is to rework your wardrobe. I wore this black pinafore dress in a similar way here, but by adding a striped tee, eye popping tights and tying the scarf differently, it looks like a shiny new purchase.

Which look do you prefer? Can you think of a third way to style this dress and save my pennies?

Femininity – is it all about florals?

The lovely Christina gave me a great idea for a post with her thoughts on feminine dressing. Like me, she likes to pretty up a more masculine outfit with a flash of floral or little bit of lace.

If you take a look at my photos, including the one above, you’ll see I follow a pretty solid pattern. If I’m wearing jeans, I go for girly colours, floral fabrics and shiny jewels – like here. When I wear dresses, I find a balance by adding tough boots, big belts and paired down accessories – like here.

I’m a rather feminine individual anyway – I have an irrational hatred of the outdoors (unless it’s sunny and I don’t have to walk anywhere), I like the colour pink, I collect flowery crockery and spiders make me scream. So does my femininity shine through, regardless of what I’m wearing? Would I still look dainty and doll-like (who am I kidding?!) in boyfriend jeans and a hoody? Or is our perception of femininity based on that first glance?

I’ll never be the type of girl to throw on her boyfriend’s shirt and still ooze glamour from every pore. I suck without makeup and I’m actually quite a dab hand at changing the oil on my car. Maybe not so feminine after all? I’ll let you decide as I paint my nails Baby Pink…

PS – Thank you all so much for your opinions on yesterday’s post. I just wanted to say to anyone considering or pursuing a job in fashion – don’t give up! Work as hard as you can to get the career that’s right for you and don’t be put off by stories from the front line. Everyone’s experience is different and it’s living through them that makes us better people. 🙂

Remember when I asked which shade of red lipstick would suit my pale colouring? You all gave me so many great suggestions and using your ideas I tracked down this orangey red. It’s a 17 lipstick in ‘Playful’. I love it!
The lovely Anna Jane from Pixelated Blonde really caught my attention with her post on the Tanya Gold article. She spoke about one thing that really puts me off the fashion trail – the lack of happiness in the industry.
I’m generally a very happy person – I think a positive outlook on life makes everything better, including how you’re seen by others. It seems strange to me that an industry so focused on appearance can look so down in the mouth all the time. Experts are constantly telling us being happy prolongs our lives, makes us look younger, reduces frown lines and keeps us slim. You’d think models would be all over it like Posh on the new Birkin.
I don’t suppose many people will know this, but for a time, I worked for a glossy fashion mag. It wasn’t a big one, unless you live in Yorkshire you probably won’t know it and the content was less Vogue, more vague, but still. A fashion mag it was. I worked there for 6 months and hated every waking moment. Wearing jeans was a sackable offence (well, almost). A size 12 was fat. Flat shoes were considered sacrilegious and I was sent sobbing to the bathroom after eating a burger for lunch. That was one place where a shining smile, goofy grin or cheerful chuckle was received with the same distain I usually reserve for The Daily Mail.
I’m glad I no longer work directly within the fashion industry. I know not all places are the same, but prejudices and judgements from the very top filter down to even the smallest of fries. And I’m relieved I got out when I did.
Have you ever worked in a fashion-related job? Is it a career you’d like to pursue? I’d love to know!
