Do You Live in the UK’s Most Stylish City?

Posted in Fashion.

If you follow me on Twitter, you probably saw lots of stylishly dressed northern types popping up on my feed last week. Along with a team of bloggers across the country, I’ve been working with Grazia magazine during Street Fashion Week to find the UK’s most stylish city, and last week I hit the streets of my hometown (Leeds) to snap signs of sartorial brilliance. Here are some of my favourite looks:

Loved Amy’s amazing Topshop jacket. She’s inspired me to dig out my Disco Pants and give them another whirl!

Claire runs ace vintage shop Mad Elizabeth in the Corn Exchange in Leeds – what an awesome backdrop for her vintage and eBayed outfit! Cute hat, too.

Sally’s got serious skillz – she MADE this gorgeous checked poncho with her OWN TWO HANDS. Perfect pairing with the navy Cons sneaks, too.

Lovely, lovely Elly in one of her trademark fantastical outfits. Double jackets are where it’s AT. Check out Elly’s blog for more pleasing pattern clashes.

It was great to see a sleeker look among all the vintage – I loved Esther’s All Saints trousers paired with an ASOS fisherman’s jumper. The perfect way to wear a chunky knit.

Lil’s smile just makes me happy! As does her fab H by Henry Holland floral jumpsuit, teamed with classic Cons. Converse sneakers are big in Leeds – I spotted so many pairs on the pavements! More from Lil here.

Finally, a lesson in double denim – Jordan looks great in this light wash denim jacket and dark wash jeans. Love the lipstick, too!

I loved photographing Leeds’ finest for Grazia and it was great to chat to people about the city (especially the new freshers! Welcome to Leeds!), although I did so much walking I literally could not move my legs the next day. Damn Leeds, Y U SO big?

Anyway, I’ve done my bit – now it’s your turn. To vote for Leeds as the UK’s most stylish city and be in with a chance of winning £50 Warehouse fashion vouchers and TONI&GUY Hair Meet Wardrobe styling product sets worth £50, visit the Grazia website and clickity click away. As I write this Leeds is in second place just behind Liverpool – don’t let those Liver Birds beat us Yorkshire Lasses! In the interest of fairness I should let you know you can vote for any of the cities involved, from London to Edinburgh, but come on now… it’s Leeds – right?

Let me know which city you vote for!

The Great Big Wardrobe Switchover

Posted in Daily Outfits, Fashion.

Over the weekend I completed the most joyous of fashion tasks – I packed away all my summer clothes (most of which I didn’t even get to wear… thanks, Mother Nature) and dug out my chunky knits, cord skirts and wool dresses. Winter is coming, Game of Thrones fans.

Unpacking clothes you haven’t seen for months is basically just ‘no-spend shopping’ (the BEST kind of shopping) – everything seems new and your debit card remains safely in your purse. I’d completely forgotten about this dress and the Zara gilet – both sale purchases earlier this year – so wearing them again is like wearing a brand new outfit.

I’m far more comfortable in the rich, dark hues of autumn/winter fashion – give me rusty red over pretty pink any day. Cold weather clothing, with its careful structure and thicker fabric, seems to suit my figure more than your average strappy sundress. And as soon as October rolls around, my bottle of Garnier Summer Body goes back in the bathroom cabinet as I embrace pale skin (and 120 deniers) for another 6 months.

Winter is coming. Hooray!

Have you unpacked your cosiest cardis yet?

What to Wear in Wet Weather

Posted in Daily Outfits, Fashion.

It’s been raining FOREVER. My feet are constantly wet, my umbrella smells musty and my hair is beyond all repair. Ballet flats, denim jeans and liquid eyeliner have all been relegated until we’ve reached Dry Time (like Peace Time after war). So while I perform an anti-rain dance, here’s what I’ve been wearing…

rainy day style
Topshop blouse | Uniqlo trousers | Uniqlo jumper | J.Crew jacket | Boots c/o Zalando | Mulberry bag | ASOS necklace

I’ve been wearing various versions of these Uniqlo trousers/leggings/treggings almost every day. They’re the perfect mix of jean and legging – not so thick that they’ll soak up the rain and leave you weighing a stone more than when you left the house, but not so thin that you’ll flash your pants with every forward stride. This tartan check pair appeal to my Cher-from-Clueless side – I threw them on with a cropped jumper and sheer shirt for a nod to the nineties.

For navigating the puddles (read: flooded streets) of Leeds, I’ve been wearing these studded, buckled ankle boots kindly sent to me by Zalando. The small heel keeps my feet away from water and the leather is waterproof – no soggy toes here! I finished my outfit off with my beloved J.Crew khaki parka – it’s one of the most versatile pieces in my wardrobe and I find myself throwing it on at the first sign of grey clouds.

I’m hoping we’ll get some respite from the rain tomorrow, as I’m hitting the streets of Leeds for Grazia’s Street Fashion Week. I’ll be street style snapping all over the city from 10am, so pull on your glad rags and come find me (raincoats and wellies are welcome)!

What have you been wearing during the wet weather?

Shopping in East London with Shopikon

Posted in Fashion.

During London Fashion Week I left the cobbles of Somerset House behind to explore East London with Shopikon. The aim of the day was to discover some of London’s hidden shopping hotspots – Shopikon is a destination shopping guide focused on independent and grassroots businesses – and despite being a regular in central London, I’d never really ventured East. So with flats on my feet and a tote bag over my arm, I headed off to Spitafields for our first stop – traditional food shop A. Gold.

I loved the 50s vintage vibe to the shop decor and had a good long look at all the classic tins – who doesn’t love a vintage tin!

Next stop was London Loves LA, an amazing vintage pop-up shop packed with 90s finds. There was a ‘back to school’ theme in the shop, with a selection of classic class photos (you know the ones – everyone sits on benches, the tall kids stand at the back and at least one person has their eyes shut) hanging up on the walls. I also spotted a range of Sweet Valley High books – amazing!

Next on our tour of East London – Mawi and Luna & Curious. I absolutely love Mawi’s oversized statement jewels and the shop was a treasure trove of sparkly stuff. Luna & Curious was a treat too – vintage typewriters sat next to cashmere jumpers and there was even a knitted baby hat in the shape of a  crown… for £48. A tad pricey, but so beautifully laid out it felt reasonable.

Next up, shop/café/cool kids’ hangout Pitfield. I was in heaven here – eclectic homeware and beautifully designed ‘rooms’ mixed with the mouthwatering smell of lasagne cooking in the kitchen. After wandering around the shop space, we grabbed a table and enjoyed fresh salads and tasty quiches.

After lunch we went on to ‘The Best Shop in The World’ – literally. LN-CC (which, quite awesomely, stands for ‘Late Night Chameleon Café’) has been voted the world’s best shop. I’m not quite sure what ‘best’ means but this place was insanely cool – off some dodgy back alley in Dalston and down some dusty stairs sits this amazing wooden structure, filled with glowing light and gnarled branches. The shop sells clothing, books and music but I was enthralled by the interior design and the brilliant treehouse that overlooks the clothing displays.

We also stopped by Beyond Retro to find some final vintage bargains, but by then my feet were falling off and I was ready for a nap. It was fascinating to be shown the sights of East London by such knowledgeable guides – the guys from Shopikon lived here at a time and knew the area well.

After a long day, the other bloggers and I – Dylana, Natalie, Ellie and Uli from We Are Social – headed home… until 8pm, when we were joined by Gem and had a rolicking good time at Brawn, where much meat was eaten and plenty of red wine consumed. Thanks, Shopikon!

Heads up – I was compensated by Shopikon to take part in the shop crawl but not to write this post.

How To Wear Wedge Trainers

Posted in Daily Outfits, Fashion.

I resisted this trend for So. Long. I was strong, I avoided the urge, I didn’t give in. Wedge trainers seemed like a ridiculous concept – one that could only look good on the very small percentage of women who are tall, slim, model-beautiful and effortlessly stylish. Me, with my average height, regular-sized body and casual wardrobe? Nah.

But then I spotted these wedge trainers on Sarenza, and all previous thoughts of their unsuitability were forgotten as I clicked ‘add to basket’.

I shied away from wedge trainers because many styles are very masculine – not good when you have feet that resemble small cruise ships. But this pair by Méliné are simpler, with no buckles or zips or go-faster stripes. I love the two-tone shade (in my favourite colour for autumn, cranberry) and soft suede, and the small wedge is manageable and… dare I say it, comfortable.

how to wear wedge trainers
Sorry for the indoor photography – damn you, Great British Weather!

I’ve worn these shoes every day since they landed on my doorstep. They look great with tea dresses and flippy skirts, but my favourite way to wear them is with a simple pair of jeans and a nice woolly jumper. I’m a shameless colour coordinator but I think that helps pull everything together (and my grandma will be proud).

If you’ve jumped on the wedge trainer bandwagon and are now wondering how the hell to wear them, here are a few tips:

  • Keep it simple – these are statement shoes, so go for simple shapes and block colours for an easy, everyday look
  • Think about your silhouette – wedge trainers can look a bit clunky (especially on big foots like me), so choose form-fitting clothing to balance your figure
  • Be careful with casual – wear these with loose trousers and a t-shirt and you’ll look like you’re heading for the gym (albeit in inappropriate footwear). Go for a more structured look by adding a shirt or blazer
What do you think of wedge trainers? Yay or nay?
