Makeup Classes for Girls with Glasses – Eyes

Posted in Beauty.

When I wrote my first post on makeup for the bespectacled, I admitted I don’t really pay much attention to my eyes. EyeBROWS, yes. Love ’em, spend at least 20 minutes a day perfecting my arches. But liners and lashes have never really been my thing. Until I had a blunt fringe cut in…

My short fringe really frames my eyes and draws attention to that part of my face. I found that with a fringe, my normal eye makeup (light, natural shadow and lick of mascara) just wasn’t cutting it and my eyes were looking small and undefined. So I hotfooted it to the high street and treated myself to some lovely new products, all designed to make peepers pop.

I’ve mentioned before that I suffer from seriously dark under-eye circles, so first on my shopping list was a new ‘miracle’ cream to give me the bright, sparkly eyes I clearly deserve. I plumped for Clinique’s new Even Better Dark Circle Corrector, which the consultant tells me will erase my dark hollows within 12 weeks. It certainly brightens up the area but as for a permanent cure, I’ll have to wait and see.

I also bought the Bobbi Brown Corrector after reading a glowing review by Emma – a pink or peach-toned concealer (I was matched to the Bisque shade, which is pink) to counteract dark spots and even skin tone. So far, so good with this – it really does help brighten my under eyes.

To define my eyes and give them some standout behind my glasses, I wanted to use liquid eyeliner. I am rubbish to any kind of shadow blending and smoky eyes feel too heavy during the day, but after years as an emo teen I’ve got my liquid liner technique down.

I used FashionistA’s Gel Liner in black along my lid, flicking out at the end. To get the perfect line, I start in the centre of my eyelid and draw a thin line to the edge. The I go from the inner corner to the middle, connecting the two together. Using this as a guide I build the thickness and flick out for that cat eye look. Done in less than a minute!

The last step in my quest for bigger, better eyes came in the form of a Groupon voucher I’d bought months before. When it comes to Groupon I’m terribly impulsive, buying vouchers then forgetting about them almost instantly. When an offer for HD brows and Nouveau Blink ‘n’ Go lashes at a local salon came up, I bought it purely for the brows.

When I went in for my appointment I was completely perplexed by the lashes on offer – some looked decidedly drag queen – so chose the shortest, most natural style. They come in small clusters, are applied directly to your own lashes and last 2-3 weeks if you’re careful with them. It’s very hard to wash your face properly as you do have to avoid them, and I’ve already lost a couple due to heavy-handedness, but I just adore them. They’re fluttery, make my eyes look twice the size and they don’t brush against my lenses (a real concern as that would drive me mad) – great for special occasions or holidays, as you don’t need to wear mascara.

After the lashes I had my eyebrows dyed, waxed, threaded, plucked and filled in with the HD brows technique. Honestly, I wasn’t hugely impressed but I do like the shape and they’re much easier to fill in now they’re nice and neat. I find strong, shaped eyebrows open my whole face and help balance my frames, too.

As a spectacle wearer I’ve always presumed my eyes were a lost cause, hidden behind those panes of plastic, but with the right products and a little effort they look much more open and defined. I’ll definitely keep experimenting with eye makeup the same way I do with lipstick!

The Making of Harry Potter – Warner Bros Studio Tour, London

Posted in Daily Outfits, Travel.

Over the Bank Holiday Weekend, Rob and I took a trip down to London to visit the Making of Harry Potter Tour at the Warner Bros. Studios in Leavesden. It. Was. Amazing.

I grew up with Harry Potter (not literally, although how awesome would that be?) – the first book came out when I was 11 and along with my brother and sister, our childhood summer holidays were consumed by the series. The books usually came out in July and we’d spend all 6 weeks reading fervently, finishing then starting again, sitting in sun loungers out in the garden with ice cold Cokes and dogs by our feet.

The stories matured as I did and after a few years, Rob was hooked too. We saw all the films together (many at midnight on opening night) and can find a Harry Potter quote suitable for any occasion. Like so many millions of people around the world, the Harry Potter journey has been a huge part of our lives. So obviously we had to do the tour. Here are some of our (many, many) photos…

Getting excited at the entrance – we hadn’t even been inside at this point!

Getting to the Warner Bros. Studio is pretty straightforward – we took the train from Euston to Watford Junction then hopped on the dedicated Harry Potter Tour Bus (sadly not the Knight Bus) which delivered us to the Studio doorstep.

Look at that massive structure behind us! It was amazing to see

The tour kicked off with a short film featuring Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint talking about the team behind the scenes. Then the doors opened and we spilled out into the Great Hall! Rob and spilt off from the group and sought out our favourite things – Hagrid, the Potions Dungeon and the Mirror of Erised.

Butterbeer – I think it was foamy cream soda. I loved it!

A few days after our tour they opened the Hogwarts Bridge, so now you can walk along it!

Once you’ve explored the school sets, you head outside for a closer look at the Knight Bus, Hagrid’s motorbike, the flying Ford Anglia, some of the houses featured in the films and the Hogwarts Bridge. You can also enjoy a glass of Butterbeer which contains zero alcohol but is rather delicious!

Then it was on to Diagon Alley, my absolute favourite part of the tour. It really felt like you were INSIDE the stories, running down that cobbled street and peering in through the windows.

Wand boxes – I couldn’t find my own name, sadly! Vicky Bishop is one lucky lady

A quick stop at Ollivander’s and £70 spent in the gift shop (seriously… that place is crazy. You WILL leave with five chocolate frogs, a Gryffindor notebook and a replica Marauder’s Map. Because you NEED them) and it was all over.

It was such a fantastic experience – I love anything ‘behind the scenes’ so to see all the sets and costumes, the amazing makeup techniques and prosthetics they used to bring the characters to life, all the hard work and talent that went into these films that I’ve watched and enjoyed so many times… it was magical. No pun intended.

tl;dr – so good I made a gif of it. Go. NOW.

Blogs and SEO – Some Quick Tips

Posted in Blogging.

I watched the new Google Chrome ad featuring the Cambridge Satchel Company late on Friday night and absolutely loved it. Chrome ads have a tendency to make me a) cry, b) feel inspired or c) all of the above – I love the personal journeys they depict and the clever way they show how integral the internet is to small businesses. And obviously, I love this particular one because I adore Cambridge Satchels.

Such a lovely ad. One thing I didn’t spot, however, was an appearance from this very blog. Lovely Hayley pointed it out in a post and after watching more carefully, I realised A Little Bird Told Me plays a tiny role in the story of the Cambridge Satchel Company. Can you spot it?

Pause it at 0:27…

When the ad shows a Google search for ‘uk fashion bloggers’, the top result is an article from The Telegraph. We only see a snippet of the title tag for the second result, but it kinda looks like…

(I pinched this image from Hayley)

Me! I’m pretty sure that’s my title tag, cut across two lines because the search is performed on the narrower screen of a mobile.

That prestigious second place comes from the search engine optimisation (SEO) I do on my blog (and also because Little Bird is hosted on Blogger, which gets preferential treatment in the search ranks as its a Google-owned company). I get asked about SEO quite a bit – it’s a pretty tricky concept to get your head around and many people feel frustrated with it because it’s hard to understand. But really, the core of SEO is simple – Google will show the most relevant sites for the search term first. All you have to do is get Google to notice you.

Here are a few very simple tips

– Use an image host like Flickr (NOT Blogger’s own!) and tag your photos with relevant keywords, like ‘Primark AW12 collection’ if the images are of the new Primark drop.
– Use keywords in your hyperlinks, like this – ‘a beginners’ guide to SEO‘ rather than this – ‘for a beginners’ guide to SEO, click here‘.
– Give your posts relevant, informative titles, like ‘How to Wear American Apparel Disco Pants’. Song lyrics are terrible for SEO!
For Blogger blogs – search your blog HTML for ‘meta’ (using ctrl + f) and insert some keywords into the <title> and <description> tags. For WordPress blogs – download the SEO 101 plugin and use it to insert meta data into all your posts. This is the crux of SEO as meta data is what Google looks for when it’s trying to determine how relevant your blog is to the search it’s performing.

If all that sounds a bit like gobbledegook, I recommend doing some research into SEO. There are thousands of articles on the subject and when you have a grasp of the basics, you can start playing around with keywords to see what works. My advice is don’t buy a book or hire a pro – the best way to understand SEO is to do it yourself. It’s all about trial and error, giving it a go and constantly tweaking things.

This isn’t a guide to SEO because I’m not an expert and frankly, it is all a bit dull, but hopefully these tips will help you get started. Well-optimised blogs are beautiful things!

Have you tried to get to grips with SEO? How did you find it?

PS – If you do a search for ‘uk fashion bloggers’ and see different results, that’s okay! Google will show you results based on the sites you like to visit, to make your search more relevant to you. If you want to check I haven’t Photoshopped these images, try searching in a fresh browser with no history.

Stylish Laptop Bags by knomo

Posted in Fashion.

In the past year, I’ve lugged my MacBook Air halfway across the world. It’s followed me to Paris, Chicago, New York, Maine, Brighton and London (many, many times). Everyday we ride the bus to my city centre studio, and together we’ve navigated delayed trains, packed platforms and 6 hour flights. My Air is very well-travelled, and all that to-ing and frow-ing requires a laptop bag that’s practical yet pretty, because let’s face it – no one likes nylon.

Lille Laptop Satchel, c/o knomo

I bought this knomo bag at the beginning of the year and have used it almost every day since. I love it, so I was delighted when knomo got in touch to ask if I’d like to try a new bag from their AW12 collection. Of course I said ‘HELL YES’ and a few days later, my beautiful Lille was sitting proudly on my desk.

fashion blog uk uk fashion blogger

First, let me state the obvious – this bag is beautiful. The Lille is structured and sturdy, functional but oh-so fabulous. The leather is textured and the zips and buckles give it a military feel. Peek inside and there’s that gorgeous hot pink, quilted lining, with three compartments and a plethora of pockets for all that stuff you simply cannot leave the house without – five lipsticks (all pink), last week’s Stylist (read three times) and two umbrellas (both broken).

The middle section is padded and zippered to keep your technology safe – my 11in Air fits easily as it can hold up to 13in of computing goodness. If I’m travelling far I put my power cable in one of the other sections, and use the third for my purse, diary, Kindle, etc.

There’s a detachable strap if you’d rather carry the Lille over your shoulder than in the crook of your arm – I like to alternate – and it’s strong enough to reassure me there won’t be any ‘bag-strap-broken-tampons-all-over-floor’ situations. There’s also a special knomo ID tag sewn inside, so if you leave it (or any knomo bag) in a taxi/on the train/under a park bench and some kind soul finds it, they can trace you for a happy reunion.

I use my Lille most days and this is what I carry – my Air, makeup bag (Bloomingdale’s), sunglasses (Topshop case), lipstick, Oyster and studio cards (Kate Spade holder), Filofax, Kindle and my purse (Hermés via car boot sale – best thrift find EVER!). Even with all this lot there’s plenty of space to spare and it doesn’t feel too heavy because the weight is distributed so cleverly across the three sections.

The Lille is £325 – expensive. But I’ve never seen a better example of ‘you get what you pay for’ – the quality is undeniable, the design is modern and sleek and the whole range is just generally awesome. If the price has you raising your eyebrows, there are ways to save – knomo have a great sale on at the moment and if you follow them on Twitter, you’ll hear about their sample sales where there are more bargains to be had. And next time you’re in TK Maxx, keep an eye out for last season knomos at fab prices.

The Autumn/Winter 12 Collection from knomo is online now, and these are some shots from the look book. I was absolutely blown away by the styling of this collection and now have my eye pretty much everything – surely you can’t expect me to go through life without an iPad cover, a Kindle sleeve and an iPhone pouch? And a girl can never have too many handbags…

Have you heard of knomo before? What do you think of the range?
