What’s Happened to our Charity Shops?

Posted in Fashion, Second Hand Shopping.

When I first started A Little Bird Told Me back in 2009, I was a charity shop obsessive. I visited my favourites at least once a week and always left with armfuls of stuff. Admittedly, much of that stuff was eventually re-donated or sold on due to its uselessness, but there were some real gems to be found. My thrifty haul posts featured regularly and I was forever showing off my second hand wares. For the next two years, I stocked my wardrobe and dressed my house largely from charity shops and car boot sales.

This year, however, things are markedly different. We’re slap bang in the middle of thrifting season – the car boot sales should be in full swing, charity shops should be groaning under the weight of spring cleaning donations. But they’re not. The weather has played a part – constant rain has stopped regular car boots – but mostly, people just don’t want to give their hard-earned stuff away or sell it cheaply. And in contrast, eBay has thousands of auctions for the things I’d usually see in charity shops – vintage dresses, faux fur coats, even Primark’s finest.

I still visit my favourite charity shops, although the lack of good stock means I no longer come out with armfuls of stuff. The car boot sales I went to every weekend last summer have been cancelled since early June due to waterlogged fields and driving rain. I haven’t done a ‘Thrift Find of the Month’ post since March, simply because I haven’t found anything.

uk fashion blog

uk charity shop blog I popped in to my local St Gemma’s Hospice shop last week and picked up a couple of things – this art deco-style vase for £2.99 and this Zara dress for £4.99. They’re my first charity shop purchases in months. There’s no doubt charity shops are suffering from lack of donations, and less stock seems to push prices up to cover the difference. Bargain hunters are left empty-handed, but surely the ones who suffer the most are the people and animals these charities support.

I have a huge (and I mean huge – it’s obscene) pile of clothes that I’d usually stick on eBay to make some extra pennies (for more clothes… it’s a vicious circle). But I’ve bagged it up and will take it to my favourite charity shops next week. I don’t begrudge anyone for trying to make a little more money in these recessionary times, but I’ve had so much enjoyment from second hand shopping, I think it’s only fair to give a bit back. I’ll still sell on eBay when I can be bothered (the image uploader gives me rage), but I want to see charity shops back to their bargainous best. And that means donating the good stuff, rather than selling it.

What do you think – have you noticed a decline in stock at your local charity shops? Are your second hand finds few and far between these days?

Life through my Instagram lens…

Things I’ve done high street fashion blog

I am beyond excited to see Blink 182 at Manchester Apollo next week. Rob and I are massive Blink fans and their music has provided a soundtrack to our 10 year (I know!) relationship. I snagged these tickets on eBay and we can’t wait to see our favourite band in a small venue. Dream come true!

Last Friday I went round to my friend’s for cocktails, homemade calzones (more on that later) and a game of Scrabble. I am terrible at Scrabble, despite the fact ‘words are my money’ as pointed out by my dear friends. The pressure really gets to me! True to form I lost, and even a heated dispute over the validity of ‘QI’ as a word couldn’t save me.

I was quite surprised to be invited to the Christian Louboutin AW12 preview at Harvey Nichols in Leeds… but I’d never turn down a chance to drool over beautiful shoes! I particularly loved these black suede knee high boots with tassels – slightly more practical than the 6in heels!

On Tuesday my mum and I went down to London to see Madonna in Hyde Park. I’m not a huge fan of Madonna’s latest music (why won’t she just play the Immaculate Collection and be done with it?!) but she put on an amazing show. Although she did flash her bum at the crowd. Which was nice.

The day after Madonna we headed into central London to do something quite major – try on wedding dresses. Me that is, not my mum. I’ve heard such good things about the Phase Eight bridal range and it’s only stocked in House of Fraser Oxford Street, so I decided to take a look. The dresses are absolutely beautiful and so affordable… but for some reason I can’t stop thinking about Jenny Packham. Damn that woman!

Wednesday was the Next Christmas Press Day. I wasn’t sure about the whole ‘Christmas in July’ thing, but as soon as I stepped foot in Next’s Winter Wonderland, I was as giddy as a five year old. Real Christmas trees! Reindeers! Woollens!

Autumn/Winter is my favourite fashion season and I absolutely cannot wait for the leaves to fall and the temperature to drop. I’ll be keeping my eye out for this floral blazer and the big cat belt. Too cute.

Sushi still freaks me out a little bit. I love the taste and Yo! Sushi is my mid-week restaurant of choice, but… it’s raw fish! Still, that sticky rice always gets me. This is an M&S sushi platter that I had for lunch – no tuna mayo sandwiches over here!

I am ridiculously proud of this calzone… THAT I MADE MYSELF. Well, my friend made the dough. But I added the filling and, um, put it in the oven. And ate it! It was delicious.

Things I wore fashion blog uk

With this lame excuse for a season we’re having, I’ve had so little opportunity to wear my summer clothes. The first ray of sunshine in weeks saw me racing for this vintage skirt I bought in New York, teamed with a lightweight knit from the French Connection sale, a very old brown leather belt and brown platform sandals c/o Bertie.

Finally, the sneaks of my dreams. These metallic Nike kicks arrived this morning c/o Sarenza and I just adore them. I’ll be wearing them with jeans, skirts, shorts, jeans, jeans… everything. Love. Them.

Project Take 10 Project 22 – Uniqlo Best of British

Posted in Daily Outfits.

It’s been a while since our last Take 10 Challenge, but we’re back and challenge 22 is a real treat.

I’ve expressed my love for Uniqlo before – their jeans fit beautifully, their free altering service is fab and their fine knit cardis are my favourites. So I was delighted when they got in touch with a special Take 10 challenge.

2012 is a big year for Britain – the Diamond Jubilee, the Olympics, this end-of-days weather we’re currently enjoying – and Uniqlo are celebrating with a range of collections designed in collaboration with some of Britain’s most prominent fashion designers. Lulu Guinness, Orla Kiely and Laura Ashley have contributed their iconic designs, so Uniqlo asked us to choose a t-shirt from one of the three designers and style it up with a Best of British twist. Exciting!

I chose a design by Lulu Guinness – I love this cute kitty tee, it reminds me of Charlotte Olympia (another great British designer) and her kitty heels. When I think of iconic British style, I immediately go Alexa Chung – say what you will about Alexa, but her relaxed, slightly undone way of wearing clothes has influenced the way many of us dress.

I wanted to capture that cool, vintage style in my outfit, so I went for a simple jersey skirt, the essential cropped leather jacket, ballerina flats and a vintage pearl collar. To really amp up the English Gentleman factor, I added a bowler hat and a leather satchel. Tally ho!

Uniqlo also asked us to create a Pinterest board to share the inspiration behind our Best of British outfits. You can see mine here – you’ll notice lots of rainy day shots, which was my original idea based on the glorious British Summertime… but then the weather decided to behave and we’ve had sunshine for the last few days! Typical.

Here’s how the other Take 10 girls got on…

I really enjoyed this challenge – it was fun to have a bit of direction for the styling and I loved investigating British style to find my inspiration. Thanks, Uniqlo!

Black Flatform Sandals – Giveaway

Posted in Blogging.

uk fashion blog giveaway

Let me be honest with you – I wasn’t planning on hosting a giveaway for these shoes. You see, I bought them for myself, in a size too small and a whirl of eBay impulse. When they arrived, the size too small was, surprisingly, too small. Thwarted once again by my gigantic clown feet. Sigh.

But although it may suck to be me, it’s certainly good news for you because these beautiful black flatforms are up for grabs! Hoorah!

The prize
1 pair of black flatforms, UK7/40. These really are lovely shoes – they’re flatform sandals in a brushed velvet-style material, with delicate ankle straps and gold buckles. They’re a UK size 7 but come up quite small so I’d say they’d comfortably fit sizes 6-7.

To enter
Just use the nifty gadget below to enter and tell me how you’d style these flatforms. You have until midnight on Sunday to enter and there’s an extra entry for tweeting too. Good luck!
