Substitution

You know in organised sports when a player isn’t performing to their best, they get substituted for someone stronger, less tired and more willing to throw themselves around a field*? Yes, well. That’s the theory I’m using to support the sudden appearance of this dress (and yesterday’s leather trousers) in my 30 for 30 wardrobe.

You see, there are a number of items I haven’t worn yet. The grey tee from American Apparel being one, and the vintage pleated skirt being two. So I’d like to propose a swapsies. The grey tee for this dress, and the pleated skirt for the leather trews. And possibly something else tomorrow, if what I’m wearing on my feet right now is anything to go by. Ooops.

Now, the Mr classes this as cheating but in my opinion, it’s a simple case of substitution. At the end of the challenge, 30 pieces will have been remixed – no more, no less. Just because I had a fit of the indecisives half way through, doesn’t mean I’m a cheater! Right, dear readers? You’re on my side, aren’t you?

*I’m feigning knowledge of, and interest in, organised sports right here.

London Fashion Week – My Experience

It feels quite odd to be rounding up Fashion Week when it’s only just getting started but sadly, for this season, my experience is over.

I was in London for a grand total of five eye-opening, inspiration-seeking, fabulously-fashionable hours. I sat behind Brix Smith-Start at Aminaka Wilmont with Iris, received outfit compliments from Shini, discussed debating with Sabine, admired Jill’s colour combinations and chatted with a big group of my favourite bloggers, including Gem, Kristabel, Harriet, Winnie, Lily, Victoria and Lucy. I wanted to meet these girls more than I wanted to see the clothes, so the whole trip was worth it after 10 minutes.
But there was more! Like champagne and cupcakes at Orla Kiely, flitting past the queues at Aminaka Wilmont thanks to vitamin water and people-watching in the press lounge. If I had more time I’d have visited MAC for a make-up over and snuck into PPQ. But alas, like Cinderella in leather trousers, I ran (or rather hobbled, after a day walking about in 4in heels) for my train at 7pm.

I promise to be more organised and make it for the duration next season!

So that was my Fashion Week. For me, fashion has always been about people, not designers. I’m more inspired by my friends, family and fellow bloggers than size 4 models strutting down the catwalk. And although there’s no denying the exhilarating atmosphere of a designer show, my heart still lies firmly with the high street, eBay, charity shops and car boot sales.

PS – It wasn’t all cocktails and canapes though (well actually, there were no cocktails and canapes to be seen – at Fashion Week! I know!) – some of the more unglamorous moments included running for my train at Leeds station screaming ‘WAIT!!’ at the conductor, sitting in the waiting room at Wakefield Kirkgate station ignoring the pointing and laughing (people at Wakefield Kirkgate really aren’t ready for leather trousers), dropping pasta salad on said leather trousers at Liverpool Street tube station (they’re wipe clean, don’t worry) and eating a sausage roll at 8.30pm on the journey home. And that was Fashion Week, darlings!

Well. Um… what can I say?

After my mini-rant yesterday, I was feeling very despondent at the thought of missing out on a blogger meet-up. If you’ve been reading Little Bird for a while, you’ll know designer fashion isn’t really my thing, so the catwalk shows of London Fashion Week don’t particularly thrill me (although the experience of a fashion show is fantastic). But the chance to spend the afternoon chatting with my favourite bloggers was just too good to miss.

I was a woman on a mission, armed with a credit card and thetrainline.com. After an hour of fruitless searching and no movement on that £70 ticket, I marched myself over (virtually, you understand) to Money Saving Expert to see what Martin Lewis had to say. Let’s just say, I <3 Martin Lewis.

I managed to get a return ticket for £25 (!!) from Grand Central Rail who are offering discounted tickets to London from various stations in Yorkshire until 28th Feb. If you’re planning a trip down this month, I recommend you visit this website before all others.

So with travel sorted and a few shows in my schedule thanks to the wonderful people at vitaminwater, I’m on my way and wearing leather pants. Oh yeah, that’s something else I have to tell you. I may have broken my 30 for 30 challenge just a tiny little bit. Only for today though, I promise.

I hope you all have fabulous weekends, whatever you’re up to. After my whirlwind trip to London, I’ll be visiting the post office, the supermarket and my family. I’m such a homebody at heart (despite the leather pants).

Stuck Up North

I often feel like I’m missing out because of my location. I live in Leeds (or Up North for those of you not so hot on the geography) and on the whole, really love it. The city is stunning (if you look in the right places), there’s a fantastic media scene and I’m surrounded by friends and family. But blogger events for us Northerners are few and far between, and my heart always sinks when I realise I’ll miss a meet-up or press day because ‘popping down to the city’ costs £70 and takes 2.5 hours.

I visit London a fair bit with work, but no one in my office had the foresight to arrange a meeting that coincides with London Fashion Week (which is just bad planning in my opinion), so I’m not sure my press pass will be put to much use this season. Which is a shame, because I have a rather fabulous jumpsuit that really deserves a seat on the front row.

Have you been to any blogger events?

The Blog Issue – Blog Life vs. Real Life

Posted in Blogging, Daily Outfits.

A few weeks ago, I linked my blog to my personal Facebook account. Now my posts automatically feed to Facebook, meaning they appear in the News Feeds of friends, family, colleagues and people I haven’t spoken to for years.

As Facebook started sending visitors my way, I began thinking about my Blog Life vs. My Real Life, and what can happen when the two collide. To start, here’s an outfit…

Blogging, particularly personal style blogging, can sometimes become a ‘dirty little secret’. Trying to explain what your blog actually is to people who don’t interact with blogs at all can be embarrassing (‘yes, there are lots of pictures of me posing, but it’s more than- yes I do take the pictures every day but have you read- I know I have lots of clothes but if you just- oh, never mind’). The fear of being ridiculed for posing in my communal garden every morning stopped me from sharing my blog with anyone outside my immediate social circle for a very long time.

It’s not just the worry of what people will think – in Blog Land, no one knows who you are IRL (In Real Life), and that anonymity can often be a huge benefit. It’s an escape from stress, a break from a boring routine, somewhere you can be fabulous and frivolous, even in your PJs. So how does introducing your Blog Life to your Real Life change all that?

Okay, so it’s really awkward when your URL gets sent to ‘all staff’ at work. You might get the odd sarcastic comment from the girl you sat next to in Year 10 English. And knowing your Grandma’s coffee morning ladies read your blog may make you think twice when writing that post on Agent Provocateur. But the benefits far outweigh the niggles – put your blog on your CV and many employers will be impressed by your dedication. Share it with your friends and they’ll probably marvel over the true extent of your shoe collection. Send the link to your Dad and you might get a text that reads ‘I am proud of u’ in return.

The most marvellous thing about mixing the two worlds, though, is seeing online friends turn into real life friends. I’ve been lucky enough to meet some wonderful, wonderful people through Little Bird, and that’s more than reason enough for me to make space for my Blog Life in my Real Life.

Do you mix Blog Life and Real Life? Do your friends and family know about your personal corner of the internet, or do you keep it private?
