Guys, I’m having a moment. A jumpsuit moment. You see how happy I am to be wearing this one? It’s like that every time I put one of my (large and extensive) collection on.

Jumpsuit, Topshop | Jacket, ASOS | Bag, Michael Kors | Flats, c/o Boden | Necklace, c/o Toolally | Sunglasses, Miu Miu

This is the first in a long line of jumpsuits I’ve been ~investing in~ over the last few months. It’s a khaki cotton style from Topshop and is just the best thing to wear, ever. I sized up for a loose fit and it’s really soft – basically like wearing your PJs all the live long day. The jumpsuit style is also ideal for my new exercise regime, which involves cycling to my studio and then home again a few times a week.

I teamed my jumpsuit with these gorgeous colour-pop shoes sent to me by Boden and a neon necklace from Toolally, because khaki and orange always look great together. Finished off with my beloved Michael Kors backpack and a lightweight jacket, this is the ideal outfit for this time of year, when it’s not quite warm enough/your legs aren’t quite ready for dresses (but when heavy jeans seem like sacrilege when the sun’s shining).

I have approximately 10 more jumpsuits in my wardrobe right now, and with my current track record of sharing outfit photos (I’m averaging 1 every 2 months, I think), it’s probably all you’ll see me wearing this summer. Long live the jumpsuit!

Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty at the V&A

Posted in Fashion, Travel.

Last weekend I was in London for Lauren’s birthday. We did many lovely things – dinner and champagne at Bob Bob Ricard, hanging in a gorgeous Balham apartment and brunch at The Riding House Café – but my favourite bit was the Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty exhibition at the V&A.

We rocked up at the V&A on Saturday around 12pm, with hopeful smiles, impeccable manners but no tickets. We were told to join the queue at the desk and soon we were at the front, ordering 4 tickets for the exhibition (which was completely sold out online). I was really surprised how easy it was to get tickets – definitely worth noting if the day you want to visit is sold out on the website.

We waited patiently for our time slot, flicking through the guide and style-spotting the people around us. At 12.45pm we were ushered in and began making our way around the dark space.

Alexandar McQueen Savage Beauty V&A

Savage Beauty is Europe’s first and largest retrospective of McQueen’s work, spanning his 1992 MA graduate collection to his final S/S 2010 Plato’s Atlantis collection. As well as the visual delight of all that beautiful fashion, it’s also incredibly moving and provides a real insight into McQueen’s personality. His quotes, inspirations and passions are displayed so honestly, giving the exhibition a real rawness. At some points, the scale of his skill was overwhelming and when we stumbled out into the gift shop after an hour and a half I felt quite emotional, but totally uplifted and inspired by such an incredible talent.

I’m not going to give away the details of the exhibition and as (rightly so) no photos are allowed, I don’t have images to share. All you really need to know is that it’s very special indeed, and anyone with even a passing interest in fashion should go immediately.

Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty is at the V&A until 2nd August. Tickets are £16 from the V&A or £17.50 online. Go buy one now!

In My Bathroom Cupboard

skincare for oily skin blog

I was always secretly glad that Sephora didn’t ship to the UK. Imagine if all that out-of-reach beauty goodness – from Tarte blushers to the Hourglass palettes – could be delivered straight to your door, rather than just being the fruit of a trip to Paris or the US? I’d never have any money. My bathroom cupboards would be bursting with product, my makeup bag overflowing with lipsticks. No, it was much safer at a distance. It was good for us.

Of course, then Sephora introduced UK shipping and I lost my mind.

acid toner skincare blog post

I managed to abstain for a good few weeks, actually. UK stores like Space NK and sites like FeelUnique.com are usually enough to satisfy my skincare habit, so it wasn’t until I started searching for a particular sold-out product that I turned to Sephora. After Caroline’s glowing review of this Dr Dennis Gross eye cream, I had to have it and finally hunted it down on the site. To ‘justify’ the £6 shipping charge, I started adding more bits and pieces until I finally checked out, flushed and exhilarated with a rather large dent in my bank account.

My goodies arrived last week, so I’ve had a bit of time to work them into my skincare routine and try them out. After suffering with really awful skin at the start of the year, I’ve been doing lots of research into the products that are right for me, and slowly but surely I’m building my Holy Grail routine. Here are my current favourite products…

Cleanse

REN Evercalm Gentle Cleansing Gel, £15
REN is a long-time favourite of mine and I’ve used a fair few of their products, but when my skin started reacting to anything and everything, I went gentle. This is my morning and second evening cleanse – it’s non-foaming, smells delicious and is just really lovely to use.

Sunday Riley Ceramic Slip Cleanser, £35
Lawd, it was hard to spend this much money on a cleanser. I bought this as part of my Sephora order even though it is available at Space NK – it worked out slightly cheaper. I used this as my first evening cleanse, applying to dry skin then removing with a warm flannel. My skin has really cleared with this and might be – dare I say it – glowing?

Avène Micellar Lotion Cleanser, £13
When my skin was really flaring up and my Dr would only prescribe Hydrocortizone cream (side eye), I asked for help on Twitter and many of you suggested Avène products. As the inflamed skin in question was around my eye, I bought this to remove my mascara and I just love it. Gentle but effective.

Tone

Pixi Glow Tonic, £18
I remember buying this when it was first released, in the old pump-style bottle. I had to order it over the phone and got two at once because the lady at Pixi said they were flying out! It’s a brilliant acid toner, gentler than many but still effective.

Moisturise

Kate Somerville Goat Milk Cream, £44
Oh, how I love this moisturiser. I bought this direct from KateSomerville.com a few months ago but with $25 for shipping (eek) it is cheaper to buy from Sephora. It’s totally worth the hefty price tag, though – it’s rich and light at the same time, making it perfect for my oily-yet-dehydrated skin.

Treatment

 sk:n Blemish Control Lotion, £22 (c/o)
I was sent a care package of sk:n treats a few months ago and I’ve been using everything pretty regularly, but this is my favourite. It’s great for treating spots before they appear – dab a bit on when you feel that telltale tingle and the blemish is gone without ever making an appearance. Witchcraft, but the good kind.

Dr Dennis Gross Ferulic + Retinol Eye Cream, £62
When Caroline Hirons said this product ‘did a little’ for dark circles, I went to buy it immediately. I have terrible dark circles (hereditary, before anyone tells me to sleep and drink more water rather than spend £62 on an eye cream…) and have tried everything to lessen them, with no joy. After the first use of this cream I saw an improvement. Better than anything I’ve used before, hands down.

Sunday Riley Luna Sleeping Oil, ~£85
This baby isn’t yet available in the UK, so it seemed like simple common sense to add it to my Sephora basket before checking out. It is honestly beautiful. It smells like a dream, sinks in effortlessly and instantly perks up my skin. I’ve noticed fine lines softening and pigmentation lightening, but the biggest difference is my pores – I have large, open pores across my cheeks which are now starting to shrink and become less noticeable. Amazing. Ms Hirons has the full lowdown if you’re interested.

And that’s it – my current favourites from the bathroom cupboard. What are yours? Have you tried any of mine? Share in the comments, please!

Giving Up Sugar

stop eating sugar tips

At the start of the year, I wrote a post about my health and how I wanted to embrace the concept of ‘wellbeing’. Whether it’s because I felt so ill at the end of 2014 or just because I’m approaching 30 and the finite nature of life is beginning to hit home (lol), these days I’m definitely thinking more what I eat.

When I was asked to take part in Canderel’s #SweetSmart campaign to try give up sugar for a week, I thought it was the perfect opportunity to give my attempts at healthy living a much-needed boost. You see, I’ve fallen off the wagon recently… unless two burgers in a week and an entire Dominoes pizza constitutes as ‘healthy living’! Ahem.

giving up sugar blog post

Although when it comes to sugar, I’m actually not too bad. I know there’s sugar in pretty much everything, but I don’t really consume any of what I’d guess to be the main sugar sins – fizzy drinks, sweets, sauces and sugar in tea or coffee. And I don’t really do any (traditional) baking or eat ready meals, so we’re good on that front.

Where I fall down is with things like white bread, tonic water (gotta have my Friday night gin…s), fruit and pasta. And I don’t believe in giving up the things you love to eat – life would be hella boring without carbs. So for me, the #SweetSmart challenge and my approach to healthy living is about two things – moderation and substitution.

Before I started my zero sugar week on Monday, I’d actually been trying to cut out sugar for a while. If you follow me on Twitter or Instagram, you’ll have seen me raving about Deliciously Ella and her amazing cook book – it’s a kitchen staple for me now and I cook from it most nights. The idea behind Ella’s recipes is that a healthy diet doesn’t have to mean giving up the things you love, but rather finding an alternative.

how to give up sugar

The classification of ‘good’ and ‘bad’ sugars is rife with disagreement and as I’m not a nutritional expert (how did you guess?), I’m not making any definite distinctions. I’m avoiding added sugars, but not ‘natural’ ones. Here’s how I’m doing it so far:

– Cooking from scratch
The easiest way to avoid sugar, as you control what goes into your food. Watch out for added sugar in things like tinned tomatoes, though.

– Drinking water
With a slice of lemon if you need a kick. I’ve also been loving cold pressed juices from Leeds Juicery.

– Checking labels
This is probably the most important part of cutting out sugar, as it’s everywhere and not always listed in the way you’d expect. This guide to sugar’s alternative names from the Canderel Facebook page is really useful.

– Clever snacking
Snacking is what catches me out every time. I’m trying to keep things like almonds on hand for those afternoon slumps, and I love Nakd bars and Bounce Balls. Why do they all have rude names though?!

– Satisfying the sweet tooth
I’m conditioned to expect something sweet after my dinner thanks to all the Penguin biscuits I ate as a kid, but I’ve been feeding my cravings with Deliciously Ella’s raw brownies which are *amazing*.

sugar free recipe ideas

With these guidelines in place, I haven’t actually found it too difficult to cut out sugar completely. I’ve had a few headaches and energy dips, but these are soon sorted with water and a handful of nuts or a banana. Since I started avoiding sugar back in February, my skin has improved dramatically and I feel tons better now than I did at the end of last year, so it’s definitely working!

I suspect it’ll be far more difficult to stick to a sugar-free diet when I go out over the weekend, but I won’t beat myself up about it. I don’t really believe in restricting things to the point where life is not enjoyable – I want to go out and drink a glass of red, eat a pizza and follow it with sticky toffee pudding. I’ll never be the person who declines a dinner invitation or drinks water in a club because I’m trying to be ‘healthy’, but I’m happy to take a bit of control over my own food and make better choices to avoid the things that make me feel bad.

I’ve only got two days left of my sugar-free plan, but come Friday I’ll be holding on to these guidelines to help me eat more mindfully in the future. I won’t be missing out on an Easter egg this year, but it might be a 70% cocoa version instead of my usual Cadbury’s!

If you’re thinking of giving up sugar, take a look at Canderel’s Facebook page for some helpful tips to get you started. And if you have any of your own, share them in the comments!
