A Day at The Dorchester with Smythson

Yesterday I was treated to something very lovely indeed – a behind-the-scenes tour of The Dorchester hotel in London. Going behind the scenes is always fun, but discovering the secrets of a 5 star hotel was particularly exciting. So here’s a little peek…

I was a little bit late arriving, so I was whisked through the main lobby, eyes wide and head swivelling in all directions. I didn’t manage to capture the stunning entrance to The Dorchester, but trust me – it’s jaw-dropping. After a quick peek at Afternoon Tea I joined the rest of the group in the kitchen to see chefs hard at work, creating food for the day.

With mouths watering (I didn’t quite manage to grab one of those profiterole buns), we headed upstairs to discover a Dorchester Suite, spotting Smythson along the way.

To celebrate Valentine’s Day, The Dorchester have teamed up with Smythson to create a very special keepsake… but more on that later.

Peeking into a Dorchester Suite was a wonderful experience – it was just so decadent. Macarons in the living room as standard, amazing views of Hyde Park and your own personal butler (although, they’re more like PAs these days – it’s not Downton Abbey, y’know). Fresh flowers, a sumptuous bed and a bright and airy bathroom that was perfect for a selfie.

Next we took a trip to the Dorchester Spa for a delicious breakfast of pastries and fruit juice and a fascinating talk from The Dorchester’s Designer Florist, Phil Hammond. Listening to Phil talk so passionately about the floral arrangements he creates for the Dorchester – including the huge, beautiful urns in the lobby which feature thousands of blooms and are created once a week from 3am so they’re ready when guests wake up – was so inspiring. Quite tempted to become a florist now…

The reason for our visit to The Dorchester was to discover their latest collaboration with classic stationer Smythson. If you plan on spending a romantic night at The Dorchester or their sister hotels 45 Park Lane and Coworth Park, you can tweet before you arrive using the hashtag #headoverheels and this exclusive Smythson keepsake – a leather-bound flip book with Smythson’s signature gold lettering – will be waiting for you in your room.

After our tour of The Dorchester, we visited Smythson on Bond Street to have our Head Over Heels flip books personalised. Lettering is one of Smythson’s long-running services – at a cost of £6 per letter, you can add personalisation to almost all Smythson products. As well as classic choices like your name or initials, you can also get cute symbols, and you can watch your personalisation come to life in store.

Here’s the finished result – I went for my full name as it’s new and still somewhat of a novelty. I absolutely love it. It’s a great gift for someone special and a little bit of luxury that’s meaningful, too.

I had a pretty magical day exploring The Dorchester and learning more about Smythson… is Valentine’s Day too early to return?

Our Wedding Thank You Cards

unique thank you cards

The very last step in the wedding process is sending out the thank you cards. About a month after the big day, when Rob and I had finally recovered and we’d reluctantly finished the last of the cheese, we started thinking about how to thank our lovely guests.

It took us all of 5 minutes to agree that we didn’t want to use a photo from the day itself (as is the norm) and another 30 seconds to decide that an illustration was the way to go. And there was never any question who we’d ask – the amazing Kris Atomic created our wedding invites and I knew her style would work just as beautifully for the thank you cards.

An email or so and a few weeks later, Kris sent over her illustration and spent at least half an hour staring lovingly into my own illustrated eyes. I mean, look at it!

Kris captured every detail so beautifully – from Rob’s spotted tie to the lace of my dress. It still makes me smile every time I see it.

With the illustration in place, I went back to Printed.com and had it printed on simple, textured card. We used Printed.com for part of the invites and the service is always impeccable – speedy, cheap and great quality.

I hand-wrote every card and sent them all off in the post, making sure to save a couple for framing. One now lives on my desk at work, and this one’s on the mantlepiece.

There are so many options when it comes to wedding stationery, but going bespoke really worked for us. There’s nothing like seeing your ‘vision’ come to life exactly as you imagined, and hopefully you’ll be left with mementoes of the day that you’ll treasure forever. </Hallmark moment>

What’s In My (Brand New) Bag

michael kors navy selma tote bag

Oh, hello. You’re rather lovely, aren’t you?

About a week before Christmas, I decided I deserved a treat. We’d just moved house, I’d been working flat out for two months on some tricky projects and I was thoroughly exhausted. Plus, shopping for Christmas presents is no fun if you can’t slip in a little something something for yourself, amirite?

I’d been eyeing up the Michael Kors range on Sarenza for a while and so with a little help from a voucher they kindly sent me, I ordered myself the Selma tote in Navy. A couple of days later I cradled it lovingly in the crook of my arm and it’s been there ever since.

Over the last few months Michael Kors has become one of my favourite brands. I love the clean, cool aesthetic – it has luxe appeal without the huge price tag. The Selma tote doesn’t come cheap at just over £300, but for such a huge bag and in such beautiful Italian leather it really is great value. Plus, check out that colour. Swoon!

The bag was a little (um, ok quite large) Christmas present to myself, but I was thoroughly spoilt in a Michael Kors fashion by Rob, too. My birthday falls on 30th December and this year I was presented with a purse and iPad Mini case (plus the iPad Mini… see, so spoilt!) to match my bag. MORE SWOON.

So here’s a little peek at what I’m toting around in my new… tote:

Michael Kors Jet Set Purse in Orange, which now seems to be sold out everywhere (it’s an AW13 style). The bright orange is the perfect partner to my navy bag and makes it so easy to spot my purse inside. Love love love.
Michael Kors iPad Mini Sleeve in Black to keep my shiny new iPad safe. So matchy matchy!
Orange leather gloves from Hobbs which I grabbed in the sale along with a navy peacoat… do you see a pattern here? 2014 – the year of navy and orange!
Embossed card holder c/o Brit-Stitch with my name stamped on the front, just in case I forget it.
Coco Mademoiselle by Chanel, another lovely birthday gift and my ‘signature scent’ (at 28 I feel I’m now old enough to have one).
A soft bristle hairbrush by Kent to keep my locks in check.

Obviously I carry round all manner of rubbish not worthy of a photograph – while prepping for this shot I retrieved four lipsticks, two packets of Tic-Tacs and a least a tree’s worth of receipts. And I’ve only had the bag two weeks!

What are you lugging around in your bag today?

The Year in Travel – 2013

Posted in Travel.

My one New Year’s Resolution for 2012 was to travel. I named it ‘The Year of Travel’ and in January 2013, I summed up an amazing year of exploration. I also promised to continue my Year of Travel in 2013. And if you’re keeping up with all these dates, you’ll know it’s now 2014 and it’s time for a recap!

I’ve tweaked the name a little bit – I don’t think every year can be The Year of Travel… if anything, 2013 was The Year of Getting Married and Almost Having a Minor Breakdown – so here’s my Year in Travel for 2013.

Way back in January 2013, I headed off to Milan to spend a few days covering Milan Men’s Fashion Week for my client. A couple of weeks later, I was in New York with the same client, this time covering womenswear at New York Fashion Week.

Having a job that allows me to travel is fantastic, but I rarely have time to do anything but work. These two trips are a little bittersweet as it was such a busy time, and the cities passed me by in a flash. Especially Milan – a beautiful place I’d never visited before. But on a more positive note, I now have a solid reason to go back!

In April I headed off on a girls’ holiday to Barcelona. Another entirely new discovery for me, and a city that totally captured my heart. The architecture, the atmosphere, the food… the Sangria! It was a bloody brilliant trip with three of my favourite girls, and it kickstarted a new travel tradition for us. If you have any recommendations for where we should go this year, let me know in the comments!

It was my lovely friend Laura’s birthday in July, and in keeping with another tradition, we went camping. Rather than struggling with tent poles and ground sheets, this year we upgraded to ‘glamping’ and stayed in adorable wooden huts at Hillcrest Park, right on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales.

As a self-professed high maintenance drama queen, I ADORED these pods – they’re heated, carpeted and have actual PLUGS inside so I could charge my phone and everything. I loved them so much, I took another group of friends for the weekend in September.

In August it was Jen Do (official title of my hen do) in Edinburgh. I celebrated New Year in Edinburgh last year and was captivated by the city, so it was top of my list for hen do destinations.

I stayed in a stunning city centre house with 11 of my best friends, danced ’til dawn, enjoyed afternoon tea and treasure hunted my way around this beautiful place. Edinburgh remains one of my favourite cities in the world and I hope to go back again in 2014.

After the massive excitement of the wedding, Rob and I were eternally grateful for our honeymoon in Santorini – it was relaxation, indulgence and pure decadence all in one. The white washed buildings, the endless blue of the ocean and those stunning sunsets.

We were so bowled over by the beauty of Greece that we made a pact to (try!) visit a different Greek Isle every year, to celebrate our wedding anniversary. This year I really fancy Kefalonia… fingers crossed!

Oh, how I loved the Lake District! Rob and I stayed at the Gilpin Hotel in November, although sadly only for one night, so we didn’t get time to properly explore. But the Lake District is now top of my list for 2014 travel – I can’t wait for more country walks around those majestic lakes!

Norfolk was my travel surprise of 2013. Honestly, I wasn’t expecting much but it’s such a lovely part of the UK, with tons of character and plenty to see. Seal spotting, windy walks on the beach, delicious food and lots of wine. It was the perfect place to spend a cosy weekend with family.

My last trip of the year was to Richmond in the Yorkshire Dales. I stayed in a cottage in the absolute middle of nowhere with some excellent people and it. was. amazing. We cooked, we drank, we explored, we played games and sang songs. It was a brilliant way to kick off our Christmas and I can’t wait for this year’s festive trip!

And that’s it! 2013 was all about the short breaks – all of my visits were under a week long, mostly due to a crazy-hectic work schedule and wedding saving. But I’m a bit of a homebody anyway so love travelling in these short stints, and I’ve been able to visit lots of different places in just one year. 2013 was also the year I explored the UK more – something I want to continue in 2014. On my list of UK destinations to visit in 2014 are Liverpool and Cornwall… any others I should add?

Where did you travel in 2013?

Favourite Outfits of 2013

Posted in Blogging, Fashion, Writing.

2013 has been the hardest, toughest, most stressful year of my life. It’s also been wonderful, fantastic and beyond-brilliantly rewarding.

A look back over 12 months of blogging shows just how many things I juggled this year – my rigid 5-posts-a-week schedule was disrupted, then completely abandoned as summer rolled on and I took on new, exciting clients, planned a wedding and attempted to buy a house. In between all that I had an absolute blast with the best friends in the world, and just as life started to right itself again I moved into a new house. And Christmas happened.

So while outfit posts were a little light this year, I did manage to round up a few of my favourites…

2013 was also the year my appearance changed quite a bit – I started the year with long, dark hair and a blunt fringe…

I wore one very special outfit (and something seriously glamorous in Santorini)…

… and then settled back into my sartorial routine of denim, 120-deniers and plenty of statement necklaces.

I’ve worked with some truly fantastic clients this year – both on the blog and through my business – spent time with some spectacular people and celebrated 11 amazing years with Rob in an ivory dress and sparkly Louboutins.

I’m not one for resolutions, but in 2014 I promise to give every challenge my all, strive for better, relish the great days and never dwell on the bad bits. How about you?
