Makeup Classes for Girls with Glasses – Skin

Posted in Beauty.

The thing about glasses is, they draw attention to your face. Particularly if you’re fond of bold frames, like me. I often get compliments on my glasses, which is lovely, but reminds me that people look at my face. A lot. And so I’m conscious of making it look as good as possible – starting with skin.

I’ve been fanatical about skincare since my teens, when a bout of acne left me miserable (and scarred). Good skin starts with cleansing but this is about makeup, so today’s ‘class’ is all about creating that perfect face.

Even though my skin is relatively clear these days, I still prefer full coverage foundation. Even after all this time (we’re talking 10 years since my last acne outbreak – thank you forevs, contraceptive pill) I’m still self-conscious about my skin and dark under-eye shadows. So, every day I use:

What’s Keeping You Warm This Winter?

Posted in Daily Outfits, Fashion.

I know I’m stating the obvious here, but winter is cold. I mean, really bloody freezing. I love bright, clear and crisp November days but that sun and blue sky can be deceiving. At this time of year, clear days are the coldest of them all and if I could assume the role of Fashion Mother for a second (I stole that term from Elly – sure she won’t mind), you really do need to wrap up warm to stave off the common cold/flu/hypothermia.

Keeping warm doesn’t always mean bundling up in a sleeping bag-esque coat, though. My love of jackets is well-documented on this blog and with a few seriously snug additions, my favourite leather biker can see me right through winter. Here are a few recommendations…

  • Find a great scarf. This tartan one is from Zara and can also be used to swaddle babies, cover the legs of OAPs and protect a small village from strong winds. In other words, it’s bloody massive and I love it. None of this cotton business – go for something in wool or fleece, that’s big enough to wrap around twice, and bask in its snuggly awesomeness.
  • Get yourself some gloves. TK Maxx is fab for gloves – the bigger stores have a huge selection of leather, wool and nylon styles to suit all tastes. I got these knitted fingerless ones so I can use my phone when I’m out and about, but I also have some leather Dents ones for smarter occasions.
  • Thick tights will save your life. Well, maybe just your legs. I’ve said it before but it’s worth repeating – as soon as the temperature drops, it’s 120+ denier or bust. Again, TK Maxx are good for quality tights on the cheap – these Calvin Klein beauties were £7.99 for two pairs and feel divine.

  • If it’s sunny, wear sunglasses. Just because it’s cold, doesn’t mean the sun’s any less damaging. If you wear glasses normally (like me), it’s even more important to protect your weak and puny eyes. Mine are prescription from Vision Express.
  • Boots > ballet pumps. In the past I’ve been guilty of wearing ballet pumps in rain, snow and gale force winds. Don’t do it – frostbite is a very real thing and your feet deserve better. Wear boots – they don’t have to be knee high or have reinforced soles – but treat your feet to a pair of socks and a leather exterior. I love ankle boots and wear these studded ones constantly.
  • Cheat your way to warmth. You’d never know it, but I’m actually wearing the modern equivalent of Long Johns in these photos. Uniqlo’s HEATTECH range is superb for secret heat – I have a fair few long sleeve tees to wear under jumpers and dresses, and a couple of pairs of shorts and leggings to go under jeans and tights. There’s all sorts of fancy technology going on under my clothing but basically, an extra layer of insulation means there’s no need to go OTT to keep warm. So you can take off those snow pants, m’kay?

Buying a Mulberry Bag for Less

mulberry bag for less

Because I’m a typical fashion blogger and a horrible cliché, I’ve been coveting Mulberry bags since I started A Little Bird Told Me three years ago. There’s just something about the brand – maybe it’s the butter-soft leather, the always-on-point designs or the British heritage – that draws me in. I adored the Alexa, loved the Lily and dreamed about the Del Rey, and had been planning my purchase for quite a while, but never quite made the leap.

And that’s probably because, despite the beautiful craftsmanship and timeless design, Mulberry bags are HELLA expensive. Although I’m growing accustomed to paying £200 for a nice dress (hello Whistles), I still think £800+ is an insane amount to spend on a bag. That’s more than my monthly rent. It’s scary.

But, that niggling ‘must-have-a-Mulberry’ feeling stuck with me, and I found myself idly browsing the site, researching. Eventually I stumbled on a slightly different, yet still official, site. One that listed all the Mulberry Factory Outlets in the country… including one in York. My hometown. 45 minutes away from my house and a city I visit often. HE-LLO.

I’ve been to the Mulberry Factory Shop at Bicester Village before and wasn’t impressed – the stock was old rather than classic, and prices were still sky high. So when I took a trip to York one Sunday afternoon, I didn’t have high hopes of finding anything…

How wrong I was.

Unlike the Bicester Village store, the York Factory Shop was quiet. Well, there were people in there – quite a few of them, in fact – but it didn’t have the frenzied, bargain-hunting feel that Bicester had. The staff had time (and space) to talk to you properly, explaining why items were reduced. Many pieces in the York store were new season – there were plenty of Alexas and a couple of Lilys – reduced because of slight damage. And when I say slight, I mean the tiniest marks in unreachable places. Turns out Mulberry are real perfectionists.

I had an idea what I wanted when I walked inside – something more refined than the Alexa, so I could use it for night as well as day. But bigger than the Lily, to lug around all my useless possessions. Classic black to go with every outfit, and maybe some gold hardware to give it a ‘rock edge’ (fashion speak).

I tried on a few styles – a small Alexa in black, a classic Bayswater… and then spotted it, as part of a display on the top shelf. One of the girls from the shop helped me get it down and we cooed over it together. The snake print leather, as butter soft as I’d been promised. The perfect day-to-night size. Gold hardware. A chain handle. I was in love.

Jade, who helped me in-store, was fantastic – she showed me a few different ways to wear it (the chain handle can be looped short or left long), let me walk up and down with it on, twisting and turning in the mirror until I was happy. She also told me why it was reduced – a tiny grey mark on the leather, noticeable to only the sharpest eyes.

I took my Mulberry Carter Snake to the till and paid up. The originally RRP was £795 and I paid… £537. Still a steep price, but one I was happy to pay for such an investment piece. The bag is my ‘well done for getting to NYFW’ present and represents a year of crazy hard work to get my freelance business off the ground. I’ve used it every day since the beginning of September and my love for it shows no signs of abating!

If you’re thinking about your own Mulberry purchase and want to explore a cheaper option, I’d definitely recommend a visit to one of their Factory Shops. The shops also sell accessories and clothing – be careful with that credit card!

A Peek Inside My Living Room

Posted in Home, Second Hand Shopping.

Over the weekend Rob and I gave our living room a mini makeover. We live in a rented house, which means we’re quite limited to what we can do to our home, although our landlords did a great job in the first place. But it’s nice to inject a little character into your space and that can be quite tricky when you can’t change the walls or floors.

So, on Saturday we decided to freshen things up. First step – hiring a carpet cleaner. We have a cream carpet in our living room (WHY?) which was looking decidedly dirty… although I had no idea just HOW filthy it was. The colour of the water in the Rug Doctor (yep, that’s the name of this particular brand of carpet cleaner) was disgusting but also fascinating. Who knew it could suck up so much? Rob went over the carpet a few times and the difference is amazing – the entire room looks so much brighter. Well worth the £21.99 it cost to hire the cleaner.

With the carpet cleaned and the rest of the room dusted down, I set about adding in that elusive ‘character’. Here are some photos of the results…

I’ve been collecting old books for about a year – I try to buy ones I’ve actually read (or want to read) so I haven’t got a huge amount, but I think they look amazing displayed around the house. Modern book spines just aren’t the same. I stack them on shelves around the living room, mixing them in with other thrifted treats (I love matryoshka dolls and old tins). When sprucing up the room we threw out an old side table, so I stacked some of the bigger books to serve as a stand for the lamp (which is from Ikea).

Hanging things on the walls of rented properties is a risky business – in the past I’ve been charged for BluTac marks, so you really do have to be careful. I generally opt for the ‘get ’em up there and worry about it later’ approach, so I’d suggest having a tube of PolyFilla on hand for moving out day.

On our walls we have a mix of frames with photos and prints inside. TK Maxx is amazing for framed prints, but I also collect frames at car boots and charity shops. The silver antlers were a TK Maxx find a few weeks ago – Rob has walked into them twice but they remain on the wall… for now.

My favourite thing about our house is the wood burning stove. If I ever own a house of my own, this is the first thing I’d put in. There’s nothing better than throwing on some logs on a cold day, and the stove itself is a beautiful focal point in the room.

I try not to clutter up the hearth with too much stuff – some candles, a family photo and a bunch of bright, cheap blooms usually do the trick (I move them when the fire’s on). We collected a load of logs from my mum’s house at the weekend – if you can deal with the odd woodlouse sneaking across your carpet, chopped logs always look great out on display. The canvas print of Paris is just something cheap I found at a charity shop but it fits perfectly against the wall.

Finally, a few gratuitous shots of Travis. He loves lounging in the, erm, lounge, and the window is his favourite spot. The old fashioned phone was a car boot find a while ago.

Switching Your Makeup for the Seasons

Posted in Beauty.

Autumn is my favourite season for many reasons – golden leaves, chilly evenings that require a roaring fire, no more gradual tanning, chunky knits, no need for strapless bras… I could go on and on.

One thing I particularly love about autumn, however – and you’ll have to just deal with the complete and utter vanity of this next statement – is full coverage makeup. Yes!

I’ve never been able to achieve the soft, dewy look that’s so popular during summer. I love concealer and powder and lipstick – all things that can look heavy and harsh on warm, bright days… not to mention end up halfway down your face under the glare of the sun. So autumn, with its darker skies and crisp temperatures, is perfect for a full face of slap. Applied carefully, of course.

I’m wearing: Benefit Porefessional Primer | Estée Lauder Double Wear Foundation in 02 | Bobbi Brown Corrector in Light Bisque | Bobbi Brown Creamy Concealer in Light | Rimmel Hide the Blemish in Ivory | Mac Mineralize Skin Finish Powder | Topshop Cream Blush in Neon Rose | Black kohl liner | Urban Decay Naked 2 Eyeshadow in Pistol | Benefit They’re Real Mascara | Benefit Brow Pencil in Medium | Kate Moss for Rimmel Lipstick in 01

This is my typical everyday makeup look during the colder months. I swap my lighter summer foundation (this year I loved YSL’s Touche Eclait Foundation) for my beloved Double Wear – I’ve been using it for years and nothing beats it for full coverage and wear. I also build up my eye makeup – I love kohl liner because it’s so easy to swipe and smudge. Finally, I swap summer’s bright pink lips for deeper red shades – the Kate Moss for Rimmel lipsticks are amazing and I love the matte finishes.

A few slight tweaks to my daily routine mean my makeup is suited to the season – darker shades, heavier eyes and fuller coverage look great when worn with woolly winter coats and wrap-around scarves. I also tend to go for darker hair at this time of year – naturally I’m a very light blonde, but I love being a (pretend) brunette!

Do you swap your makeup for the seasons? Which products do you save for autumn/winter?
