The Six Piece Wardrobe Style Challenge – Day Four

Posted in Daily Outfits.

Day Four, my friends. Day Four! I feel a great sense of accomplishment, having reached this late stage in the week with only six pieces of clothing to play with. Although, before you heap praise on me in the comments, take a look at today’s rework and see what you think…

I’ve been searching for the perfect leather pencil skirt for years. Seriously – I’ve tried so many styles, brands, vintage shops, eBay auctions and thrifty finds but they’ve never fitted properly (or at all, in many cases – leather is very unforgiving on the hips) and I’ve always returned or sold them.

This skirt was the result of two glasses of wine on a week night and some very competitive eBay bidding. When I won for £15.76 I didn’t hold out much hope, but as soon as I slipped it on (over the hips! Hooray!) I was in love. It fits like a dream. The leather is soft as butter. It’s deceptively comfortable. The perfect length, with the perfect slit at the back. My most-cherished skirt ever. Sigh.

I think it looks wonderful with the camel colour of the blouse too, and this may just be one of my favourite outfits I’ve worn on the blog. What do you think?

PS – I know the black polo neck could be considered cheating. Technically it’s another item, not an accessory. But I need it for body temperature purposes and hope you’ll be too distracted by the beauty of the skirt to notice.

Day three of my challenge and I’m a little stumped – today I’m going to a spa for a massage, manicure and some general relaxation. Normally I’d wear something simple and gym-like – leggings, a baggy tee and a zip up hoody, maybe. But this is a challenge, and I’ll be damned if I’m giving up at the first hurdle!

I decided a classic jeans-and-white-tee pairing would be perfect… but I couldn’t leave it at that. There’s no point getting your hair did for a spa day, so I stuck this straw trilby on, added the leopard print scarf (this comes everywhere with me at the moment) and went for my favourite bird ring. Done!

The Six Piece Wardrobe Style Challenge – Day Two

Posted in Daily Outfits.

I think I’m misleading you all with that title – so far, my ‘challenge’ has been pretty easy! Maybe I actually don’t need to buy anything new, ever again! *gazes wistfully at ASOS website* Okay, scratch that. Let’s get on with passing judgement on my second outfit of the challenge, shall we?

I clearly have a bit of a Zara problem. Ahem.

Anyway – am I cheating with the blazer? There’s no way I could get away without it, as it’s so bitterly cold in my office. So I think it’s allowed. I’m pretty sure this challenge was designed to test my fashion prowess, not give me hypothermia.

I find these Zara boots quite hard to style – I initially finished this look with my leather jacket but it all felt a little too ‘YEHAAAWWW!!!’ for me. I switched the jacket for the blazer and think the whole thing looks much more streamlined. The chunky black rings and slouchy chain bag are my go-to accessories to give an outfit that ‘rock chick edge’ all the magazines talk about. Taylor Momsen’s got it too, you know.

What do you think of my second Six Piece Wardrobe Style Challenge outfit? I’ve got a feeling it’s gonna get much harder tomorrow…

The Six Piece Wardrobe Style Challenge

Posted in Daily Outfits.

After last week’s Outfit Archive post, the fabulous Vix from Vintage Vixen set me a challenge that worked with my ‘style recycled’ theme – choose five things from your wardrobe (a dress, trousers, top, skirt and another of your choosing) and wear them (and only them) through the week, changing the pieces each time with a clever use of accessories.

Now, I’m not one to turn down a challenge, but only ONE top?! Rather than spend the week chained to the washing machine, I decided to cheat just a little bit and up the stakes from five to six – two tops, trousers, a dress, a skirt and my choice – a cardigan (naturally).

I chose simple basics in neutral colours because they’re so easy to style. Throughout the week I’ll be using my vast collection of belts, scarves, necklaces, shoes and jackets to make a whole wardrobe from just six items.

So, here it goes – Monday’s look…

This dress has fast become a favourite of mine, and teamed with tights and cute ankle socks the whole look is very school girl. Which, unless the word ‘sexy’ is inserted in front, is always a good thing.

So how’d I do on the first day of my challenge? What did you think of my outfit? And will you be joining me on my Six Piece Wardrobe quest?

Sunday Smile #25

Posted in Second Hand Shopping.

Happy Sunday gang! Today I’m jumping on the fashion blogger bandwagon and giving you a haul post… second hand style! Here are some of my thrifty finds from the last few weeks – my favourite car boot has closed for winter (boo) but I’ve found a new (indoor!) one to explore every Sunday, and of course the charity shops are still bursting with unloved garments looking for a new home.

I picked up this Wallis dress coat at a car boot sale for £2. It’s 100% wool and perfect for throwing over fancy dresses on chilly nights out. It needs a dry clean and a new button, but other than that it’s pristine.

You’ve seen this one before but it was such a good find, I thought it deserved another showing. A faux fur coat for £7.99 from my favourite charity shop? Yes please.

I know, I know… another jacket? I simply couldn’t resist this vintage Episode number, with it’s square necklace and cropped shape. It was £5 from – where else? – my favourite charity shop.

I snapped this cute Topshop blouse up yesterday – it’s another charity shop find and was £3. I love the Peter Pan collar and dainty buttons.

My first trip to the indoor car boot sale uncovered this dapper felt trilby. It was made by Lincoln Bennett & Co, hatters to the Royal Family based in Piccadilly, London. A snip at £2.

My favourite find of all is this beautiful dressing table set. The wonderful Vix tells me it’s probably from the 1950s – sets like these were often given as 21st birthday presents. It’s perfectly preserved in its satin box, each pretty piece unused. I paid £1 for it from a lovely old couple and actually asked if they wanted a bit more, but they were insistent I should take it.

I’ve been very lucky with my finds over the last few weeks. Have you unearthed any treasures on your travels?
