The Blog Issue – Body Image

Posted in Blogging, Writing.

I’ve never had any problems with how much I weigh, or what the label in my favourite jeans says. Numbers are meaningless to me – what matters is how I look and how I feel. And for the most part, I’m happy with who I am and how much space I inhabit. I’ve never felt particularly influenced by the slender physiques of models and actresses either. As regular readers will know, I’m much more interested in real people with real figures. Real people, like bloggers.

Bloggers often discuss the supportive community that surrounds them, but fashion blogging in particular is a breeding ground for insecurity. That daily slew of posts showcasing beautiful girls with slender size 8 figures, styled to perfection with blindingly white teeth and cascading waves, can have a profound affect on others.

I was shocked to read the beautiful Lily from LLYMLRS had been described as a ‘plus size blogger’. She’s a petite size 10 and utterly stunning. And if she’s plus size, I’m morbidly obese. The fabulous Jazmine from Jazzabelle’s Diary is a supermodel in the making, yet she tells me blogging can make her feel ugly. Again, if Jazmine is ugly, I’m a troll in lipstick. Could our exposure to these perfect ‘real people’, who blog just like us and who aren’t models or celebs, lead us to feel less than enamoured with our own ‘real person’ bodies? Could blogging tempt us to judge others because they don’t live up to the standards being set?

There was an article in Marie Claire this week about healthy living bloggers and the levels of perfection they present to their readers. I don’t read any of the blogs mentioned and judging by the comments, most disagree with the notion that they may be pressured into dieting or exercising after reading a blog. But there are a few who admit to striving for perfection so they can blog about their slim figure/zero calorie meal/intense running regime.

There’s a difference between people who model clothing in magazines and those who wear clothing on blogs. Magazines make a huge fuss about ‘real women’ (a term I despise), but this term should not exist in the blogsphere, because we’re all real women. We exist; we walk and talk and breathe, and that makes us real. No matter what size we are.

Have you ever felt the niggles of insecurity when reading blogs, or when writing your own? Have you ever acted on them?

Motel Dawn Jumper, H&M jeans, Primark blouse, Topshop pumps and ring

I have been DYING to share these outfits with you! The v.generous ladies over at Motel let me loose on their website and I plumped for the Motel Edrie Skirt and the Motel Dawn Jumper.

The skirt is fabulously flowy and just demands a sexy strut. I teamed it with a pussybow blouse and prim and proper heeled brogues for a thoroughly modern Mad Men look. The fluffy, cropped jumper was more of a challenge – there will be no bare midriff on THIS blog, let me tell you. I went with a sheer blouse from Primark (loving blouses at the moment!) and my favourite skinnies to balance out the snuggly, furry loveliness of the jumper.

I love both looks but leopard print will always have a special place in my heart, so the first just swings it for me. How about you? Got a favourite?

Happy One Year!

On October 1st, 2009 one girl picked up her camera, snapped a photo of her outfit and posted it online.

My first outfit picture. ASOS dress, Primark trench, cardigan and belt, Topshop shoes

Last summer I stumbled across What I Wore when browsing Modcloth. For years before, I’d been documenting my daily outfits – first in a fashion diary written in a thoroughly old-fashioned way, then on the fashion thread in the Money Saving Expert forums.

Discovering Jessica’s blog opened my eyes to a whole new world of fashion – one where it wasn’t models wearing beautiful clothes but real people, with stressful jobs, bad hair days and chipped nails.  The realisation that people were actually interested in reading about the mundane yet stylish lives of others intrigued and excited me.

One year on and this blog has become my finest piece of work. I’ve always wanted to write a book but I know my limits – I’m no Jane Austen. The reason I chose copywriting over journalism is because I have a particular fondness for short, sharp prose, and blogging is the perfect format for the kind of writing I like to think I’m rather good at.

I love to write, but I love to communicate more. My readers reassure me, inspire and drive me. Every comment makes me think and the feedback is invaluable. So, dear readers, here’s to you, you and you. I hope you’ll stick around for more outfits and opinions.

A few fashionable favourites from the last 12 months…

A Few Extra Inches

Thrifted shirt and skirt, Accessorize tights, Primark trench, ring and belt, ASOS heels

I am so not a heels kinda gal. Give me ballerinas over stilettos any day. Brogues over wedges. Plimsols over Mary Janes. I like to stay as grounded as I can, without walking around in my stockinged feet.

I’m not, however, ignorant to the many pleasures of heel-wearing. Longer, more toned legs. A sexy (if somewhat forced) strut. The ability to see over heads. So that’s why I have a few well-chosen pairs sitting in my wardrobe. These ASOS mushroom suede platforms are new acquisitions and current favourites – they work just as well with jeans as they do with posh frocks.

Do you like a little extra height, or are your feet firmly on the ground?

Spots vs. Stripes

Love Label Zip-through Day Dress, Steve Madden leather jacket, Primark tights and ring, Love Label Kaa Brogue Boots

I’ve always been a straight-up-and-down kinda gal – no, (definitely) not figure-wise (no one can ignore these hips o’mine) but certainly when it comes to prints. I love stripes and my wardrobe is bursting with nautical niceness in every shade imaginable.

When the lovely folk at http://www.very.co.uk offered me free reign on their website (well, almost) to choose some goodies to feature on the blog, I went straight to dresses and set up camp to do some deciding. And when I happened upon this dotty delight, I knew it had a place amongst all those stripes.

The dress and black brogue boots are in constant rotation – both are so easy to wear, so comfortable and oh-so perfect for autumn! For a dreary Monday morning, I styled the pieces with a tough leather jacket, intricate earrings and matchy-matchy tights. A winner, I think!

Have you ever made a purchase from http://www.very.co.uk? Can you spot any AW10 must-haves on the website? And whose side are you on – spots or stripes?
