An English Girl in Paris: Part Une

planning a trip to parisI’ve been in Paris.

things to do paris city breakIt was wonderful.

I’ve been to Paris quite a few times before – when I was younger, it was our family holiday of choice and we’d go every summer, driving down to Calais, taking the ferry over, spending a few nights in Paris for the sights and Disneyland then driving further south for sun and Eurocamp parks with massive waterslides. The romance of Paris is most certainly lost on 13-15 year-old teens.

I’ve also been a few times as an adult but only for work, with no time for sightseeing. I’ve also been on fashion trips where everyone scoffed at the idea of going to see the Eiffel Tower and I meekly agreed that it was all so blasé and cliché and other faux-French fashion words.

It’s been a very long time since I’ve seen Paris properly, and I’ve never had the chance to appreciate it as the most visited country in the world, with all its romance and grand architecture and gooey cheese. So as a 28 year-old, visiting the city with best friends who are equally as Carrie Bradshaw about it, I was ready to ‘perdre ma merde’ over the City of Light.

Our AirBnB apartment had the most breathtaking view of the Sacré-Coeur – it was a truly incredible sight to wake up to each morning. That, combined with hardwood floors, gorgeous furnishings and high ceilings made this one of the best places I’ve ever stayed in.

Montmartre is a beautiful part of Paris – some say it’s unsafe at night and it did feel a bit rough around the edges, but that made it all the more interesting. Tumbledown shops and traditional boulangeries sat alongside hipster bars and brunch spots with snaking queues, and the community was a mix of old men on scooters with baguettes in their pockets and impossibly beautiful woman with severe haircuts and tattoos. I LOVED it.

We only had two full days in Paris, so we were determined to pack in as much as possible. We kicked off day 1 with brunch at HolyBelly – a recommendation on Twitter led me here and although there was a 20-ish minute wait for a table, it was SO worth it. The food was delicious, the decor was suitably stylish and the atmosphere and service were fantastic.

After brunch we walked down Boulevard de Clichy into Pigalle, to see the Moulin Rouge building. This part of Paris is quite comically ‘seedy’ and packed with sex shops called Pussy’s and Porno Stop. The Moulin Rouge is at the end of the boulevard – it’s definitely worth a visit for the iconic windmill and the interesting facts inside, but after 20 minutes we were done and on to the next.

montmartre paris guideAfter a couple of wine stops and a look in some of the shops, we made our way to Sacré-Coeur. It’s quite a climb but once I clocked the panoramic views of Paris I forgot my achy legs. Look one way and you’ll see the hazy city spread out beneath you; look the other and the monument of Sacré-Coeur towers above. Inside is just as awe-inspiring, with a very peaceful, calming feel and some absolutely stunning architecture.

where to stay in parisWhen we’d taken the obligatory tourist photos, we descended back down the steps and into Montmartre for more exploring. There are so many winding streets leading to hidden gems – we stumbled across an amazing jewellery shop and a junk shop selling everything from plastic doll heads to old war photos.

After an early dinner at a pavement café (sweet and savoury crepes which were AMAZING), we headed back to our apartment to get ready for our main event – the final night of Jay Z and Beyoncé’s On The Run tour at Stade de France. I don’t think I’m ready to put into words how amazing it was – emotional, thrilling, dance-till-your-feet-fall-off brilliant. Come back for Part Deux tomorrow!

The Mermaid Skirt

Posted in Daily Outfits.

fashion beauty bloggers ukI’m generally quite a casual dresser, but there are some occasions that call for a little bit of flair.

Launching your shiny new website to overwhelming positivity and praise is one of those occasions.

When I walked into my studio building wearing this outfit, a friend exclaimed ‘mermaid skirt! I LOVE it!’ and so The Mermaid Skirt was given its official title. I’ve had this Topshop pencil skirt for ages but never really found a way to wear it due to my aforementioned casual tendencies. Then I remembered black solves all fashion problems and… ta dah!

So! Now I’m all settled in to my new home and you’ve had a chance to nosy around, let’s get back to regular programming with an outfit post. Shall we?

Many years ago when I was in college, there was a girl in my Sociology class who, come rain or shine, wore sandals and a scarf. I remember telling my more academically-gifted friends (who were in Applied Maths or whatever) how stupid this combination was – why bother wearing a scarf if your toes are exposed to the elements?

And now I’m eating my words, because mixing cosy woollens with more summery pieces is my new favourite thing.

The sun is still shining here in Leeds, but there’s a definite nip in the air. Rather than freeze in my summer wardrobe or sweat it out in too-early layers, I’ve discovered a handy combination of the two – bare legs and chunky knits. These silk shorts haven’t got nearly enough wear this summer so I’m very happy I have a few more weeks before they’re packed away until next year.

I loved wearing this outfit. I felt super stylish without being too ‘dressed up’ – I’m casual to the core so this was the perfect combination of laidback cool. Next up – a bikini with wellies?

HELLO!

Welcome to JforJen.com – my new online home!

There have been some big changes around here and I’m so excited to share everything with you. A Little Bird Told Me is no longer (sob!), but I hope you’ll love the new blog even more.

I started thinking about making some changes to the blog around this time last year. I was in such a rut – I felt totally uninspired and thoroughly boring. I actually came quite close to packing it all in and deleting 5 years of content… but then I realised, it wasn’t the actual act of blogging that I’d fallen out of love with. I still enjoyed sharing my outfits and writing about my life, but I wasn’t happy with my surroundings.

I started A Little Bird Told Me in 2009. I was 23, I worked at an advertising agency in Sheffield and lived in a teeny flat with Rob. In 2014 I’m 28, married, run my own business and live in a lovely house (still with Rob, FYI). Priorities have changed – I buy more homeware than clothing these days and I’m starting to actually enjoy cooking. Five years is a long time when you’re in your twenties – I’m a totally different person now to what I was then.

But although I’ve changed and grown as a person, my blog had stayed pretty much the same. I was still on Blogger and still struggling with the limitations of the platform. I’d had a few minor redesigns over the years, but nothing that really refreshed the look and feel of the site. And although my content had developed – my photography was a million times better than when I started, and I was writing about home, food and travel rather than just posing in front of a camera – it still felt very entry-level. In short, my blog was a basic bitch. Realising that was a breath of fresh air, and it started the ball rolling. With the idea of a huge overhaul in my mind, I set about making things happen.

After many years of faffing about with two identities and two URLS – the blog and my freelance business – my first decision was to bring everything under one roof. I wanted a single place that represented my freelance work and sold my services, but also allowed me to blog in a more professional, ‘grown-up’ way. After a little bit of brainstorming, I came up with a name… although originally it was J is for Jen until I wrote that out as a URL and realised it spelt something rather rude. It’s still my Snapchat name though, just for the lols.

I worked with Leeds-based designers Passport to create the branding – I wanted something very clean, modern and fresh without being too ‘hipster advertising agency’. I think we achieved that beautifully!

With the branding in place, I contacted Kim and we started chatting about the technical side of stuff. As soon as I knew I wanted to merge my existing blog and business sites into one new, super site, I thought of Kim. I met her at Blognix last year and I’ve watched her create some amazing new homes for Wish Wish Wish and Essie Button, so there was no one else on my list. Kim made the whole process so easy – at one point I described it as ‘designing my actual thoughts’. As things rumbled on, we worked out the little niggles and refined the features until we were left with a site that I truly adore.

And here we are! A Little Bird Told Me is now J for Jen – all the old posts are here along with all 26,000 of your comments and many, many photos of my face. Things work pretty much as they always did – you can use the search bar or the categories to navigate around, and there’s no truncated feed to deal with. If you click ‘HOME’ in the top nav, you’ll find yourself amid my professional business website, but that’s ok! The blog sits within the BLOG section (obviously) but the rest of the site is dedicated to my business. Feel free to nosy around!

I’ll still be posting outfit photos and fashion-y stuff, but there’ll be more travel adventures and a bigger focus on home. I’m also going to try more food posts – I’m not a very skilled cook and have zero patience, which isn’t the best combination in the kitchen but we’ll give it a go. I also want to do more writing about being in your late 20s/early 30s – getting married and all the stress a wedding brings, attempting to buy a house, the constant ‘when are you having children’ question – all that good stuff. If there’s anything you’d love to see on J for Jen, let me know in the comments!

I’m so excited to share the new site with you all and hope you love it as much as I do. I know some of you have been here since my very first post in 2009, and for that I can’t thank you enough. I’m so grateful to everyone who reads, comments, tweets and likes, whether you’re an old-timer or brand new. Thank you all for being here through the most exciting part of my life.

Here’s to the next chapter!

How to Dress Like a Grown Up

Posted in Daily Outfits, Fashion.

daily outfit photo blog

I like to think there are two types of ‘grown up style’ – one is very chic and minimal, all monochrome and faux fur and butter-soft leather, from labels like Acne and Equipment.

I’m definitely not there yet.

The other is based entirely around the pairing of blouses and cardigans. And it’s much easier to pull off, especially with Boden on your side.

I stopped trying to be cute around the age of 24 and since then, I’ve attempted to master a more grown up style. It’s actually quite tricky – I’m definitely not stylish enough for the aforementioned minimalist monochrome look, but I also don’t want to go down the pencil-skirt-and-courts route. Luckily, the lovely folks at Boden stepped in to help me out.

(lol srs face)

With a very generous ‘choose whatever you want!’ offer, I sat down with the Boden website and selected a few key pieces to shape my more grown up wardrobe.

First up was a nice blouse. A nice blouse is what ~grown up ladies~ wear, right? The thing I love about Boden is despite being very nice and very grown up, their clothing doesn’t ever feel frumpy or dowdy. This mustard yellow beauty has the most adorable swan print, plus the swans have blue beaks. Now that’s fashion forward.

My second selection was a classic cropped cardigan. I adore this cardigan. It’s the absolute perfect shape to wear with those high-waisted skirts I keep banging on about, but it looks great with jeans and longer tops, too. It’s cashmere so it’s super soft and it comes in about a million (actually 15) colours. The obsession starts here…

I also picked up this glorious pink coat which I’ll tell you about in another post, and my final pick was a pair of perfect leopard print pumps. DYING over these. So pretty, so comfy, so easy to wear with every-damn-thing.

I think the finished look is just a little bit more ‘pulled together’ than my usual jeans-and-t-shirt style, which is exactly what I was going for. It won’t get me street-style-snapped, but that’s so 2010 anyway.
