Boxing Day OOTD

I’ve had a very lovely Christmas. How about you?

Rob and I have had a festive few days staying with his parents in the countryside. It was nice to be back on the wedding turf after a few months… much colder today than it was in September, though!

I love Boxing Day – the pomp and circumstance of Christmas is over but we’re still allowed to sit about watching telly and eating cheese without a hint of guilt. Real life may resume tomorrow, but for now I’ll just have another Ferrero Rocher, thanks very much.

I’ve been wearing these leather shorts with alarming regularity for the last few weeks. I picked them up for our studio Christmas party as I thought they were the perfect smart/casual piece. And I was right – they can be dressed up with a sheer top and heels or dressed down with a cosy jumper and flats. They’re also fabulously forgiving and sneakily elasticated at the waist, making them ideal for Boxing Day. Pass the biscuits, please.

New Home – First Peeks

home interiors blog post

If you follow me on Instagram you may have noticed – due to the excessive photo spam – that I’ve just moved into a new house. Yes, we moved the week before Christmas. Clever us.

We are very happy though – earlier this year we tried to buy a place which sadly fell through, and since then we’ve been looking for another perfect home. I have a very distinct taste when it comes to houses, and when you’re spending such a huge amount I really don’t think you should settle. My stubbornness, combined with Rob’s very specific need for a cellar with power supply (he’s a drummer and it’s not the kind of instrument you can play quietly in the living room…) meant we’d had a long and fruitless search.

About a month ago, my obsession with Rightmove’s email alerts paid off when a beautiful house came on the market – our ideal street, within our price range, the perfect size, with cellar, original features, a fireplace AND a cat flap. Spot on… but to rent, not to buy.

We decided to go for it anyway and within a few hours we’d signed the contracts. Our plan is to rent for 6 months then see where we are on the buying scale. I still refuse to accept the notion that renting is dead money – a home is a home, no matter what kind of contract you have.

So, moving fell on the busiest weekend of the year, with a night out, a Christmas party and a family meal to slot in around loading the van and unpacking at the other end. But we did it, we’re in and the cats are already showing their displeasure at being uprooted by ignoring us entirely. Here are some sneak peeks of the little bits I’ve managed to get sorted over the last few days…

Because we moved from our old place in mid-December and know we’ll be in a state of disarray until at least January, we decided to skip ‘proper’ Christmas decorations this year. Instead of my usual real tree, I bought this twinkly paper tree from John Lewis and decorated it with teeny baubles from Paperchase. I got a pom pom wreath from Paperchase for the fireplace and a real wreath from my local florist for the front door. Suitably Christmassy without the stress!

Moving into a new living room means we finally have room for this beautiful wooden tripod lamp from Habitat at Argos, which was kindly sent to me about 6 months ago. I love Habitat lighting and the sage green shade looks great with our new (to us) grey sofa, donated by our amazing friend Nic!

I’ve gone a bit cushion crazy – I literally cannot stop buying them. The brilliant Custard Cream one is by Nikki McWilliams, the pheasant is from Next and the check is c/o Made.com (more on that and Made.com soon).

My love for fireplaces is well-documented – we had a wood burning stove at our old place and I was slightly obsessed with it. The new house has a gas fire, but it’s encased in the most beautiful original surround. My real-fire snobbery was silenced as soon as I saw it.

A few more finishing touches – my love of clutter and ‘stuff’ knows no bounds but I’m trying to keep things a bit clearer and chicer here at the new place. Who can resist a set of Santa matryoshka dolls, though?

Holidaying in Norfolk

things to do in norfolkbeach breaks in the ukvisit norfolk ideas

A couple of weeks ago, Rob, my brother Patrick and I drove from Leeds down to Norfolk with a car full of wine, cheese and good cheer.

We headed to Salthouse where we met my Mum, her husband Stuart, my grandma and her dog Harry and my sister Rachel and her boyfriend James. Rachel and James live in Norwich and as they’re always making the (long, boring and tiring) journey up to Yorkshire, we decided to bring the fun down to them and have an early family Christmas in a windswept beach cottage.

I’ve never been to Norfolk before and to be honest, I was quite surprised by its beauty. As a country, we’re always banging on about the beauty of Scotland and the Cotswolds and the Yorkshire Dales, but Norfolk rarely gets a mention despite being a truly lovely place.

Our cottage was right on the beach and although the winds were whipping and the temperature freezing, we enjoyed a blustery walk to the seafront along the pebble beach.

On Saturday afternoon we went seal spotting. So. Much. Fun! Look at their little faces! I die.

After an hour of squealing, snapping and waving at seals (they look right into your eyes!), we headed back to the harbour just as the sun started to set.

On our way home we stopped in the tiny town of Cleve to pick up supplies for the night’s feast – my mum is an amazing cook so we were very excited at the prospect of mussels!

While dinner was cooking, we headed out to Holt – on the way into Norfolk we drove through the town and I was totally mesmerised by the lights. Every shop was beautifully twinkly – not a waving santa or scrap of tinsel in sight.

After taking in the lights, we made our way home to a roaring fire, a four-course meal and far too much wine, with a quick fire quiz and three hilarious rounds of the Celebrity Name Game thrown in for good measure.

I love discovering new parts of the UK, and Norfolk was a real hidden gem for me. Have you ever visited?

The Humble Tea Dress

Posted in Daily Outfits, Fashion.

There was a time, during the writing of this blog, when a tea dress and tights was my outfit of choice. It was 2009 and plaid dungarees were still just a suppressed memory of the 90s, pink hair was reserved for actual Pink! and floral tea dresses were the look du jour. I wore my collection day in, day out and never struggled with dilemmas like if the over 25s can wear snapbacks or whether I can really pull off New Balance trainers.

So when I spotted this classic tea dress in the Hobbs shop at York Designer Outlet (which is SO much better now than it was when I worked there aged 16), I snapped it up for a bit of 2009’s simple approach to style.

Compared to my 2009 self, I prefer a much simpler, cleaner look these days. Rather than add fuss with brogues and heavy accessories, I toughened up my tea dress with leathers and pointy heels. With just a few easy changes to the styling, a piece that’s not particularly on-trend looks fresh and modern once more.

Is there anything you were REALLY into (fashion-wise… I don’t need any confessions!) a few years ago that you rarely look twice at now?

Gilpin Hotel and Lake House – Lake District Luxury

Posted in Travel.

With all the wedding and honeymoon excitement this year, when Rob’s birthday rolled around we were both ready to relax. I thought it’d be nice to escape to a pretty country hotel, so I was delighted when the Gilpin Hotel and Lake House offered us a one-night stay and a chance to discover their spa facilities.

IMG_8231IMG_8297IMG_8234

The Gilpin is nestled in the Lake District, about a 2 hour drive from Leeds and somewhere I’ve shamefully never visited before. It’s an absolutely beautiful place, and my eyes were wide as saucers as we drove down the twisty, tree-lined lane towards the hotel.

I was genuinely blown away by this place. We stayed in the Lake House, which is the Gilpin’s spa hotel and is about half a mile away from the main building, down a country track. It feels very remote and peaceful and is surrounded by the most beautiful scenery I think I’ve ever seen.

When we arrived on Tuesday, the fields were bathed in sunshine and the lake glistened and glimmered. It was truly magical.

The Gilpin pride themselves on their decoration style and there’s a real focus on the interiors. On their website, there’s a section describing the interior design of each room which tells you the style of wallpaper used, what fabrics feature in the room and where the curtains are from. It’s such a lovely touch and shows just how much thought has gone into the space.

We stayed in the Beatrice room and I squealed with delight when I saw the country tweed, French florals and exposed wood…

IMG_8133IMG_8100IMG_8127

… offset by a super chic bathroom and stunning views over the hills. Just amazing.

After a few quick snaps and a change into fluffy bathrobes, we were led downstairs by Spa Manager Jo to start our Jetty Spa Trail. The Jetty is the Gilpin’s spa facility and their Spa Trail is the bespoke couples’ spa experience. We started with an aromatherapy consultation – Jo asked us what scents we liked and gave us some essentials oils to sniff – our three favourites would be used to create custom products used in our Spa Trail. I chose jasmine, mandarin and frankincense and Rob went for lemon, cedarwood and cypress.

With our noses satisfied, Jo showed us to the pool area which was booked out just for us. I didn’t take my camera to the pool (for obvious, not-wanting-to-look-like-creepy-weirdo reasons) but the space was beautiful – really serene and luxurious. We swam, lounged, sat in the salt snug with delicious fruit cocktails then hopped in the shower with our personalised salt scrubs.

IMG_8263IMG_8261IMG_8266IMG_8258

Once we were feeling fully revitalised, Jo came with two pairs of wellies and fleecy socks and took us over to the spa cabin – a little wooden structure raised up on stilts, overlooking the lake. I was utterly blown away by this room – flickering fires stood in each corner, the beds were covered in lush faux furs and the view over the lake was spectacular. We settled down for the best full body massage either of us has ever experienced, with Jo and another therapist using our personalised oils to really relax our stressed muscles.

IMG_8239IMG_8214IMG_8236

When our massages were done, we slipped back into our wellies and were led down a candlelit path (night had fallen and I took these photos the next day) to the next part of our Spa Trail – Afternoon Tea in a wooden hut at the end of the jetty. We curled up on the sofa, an electric faux fur blanket to snuggle with and a fire to keep us cosy. There were little sandwiches, cakes, flowering tea and scones with jam and cream – all delicious and all gone within minutes! We admired the Eames chair and looked out over the darkened lake.

Finally, we spent the last hour of our experience in the hot tub – you can just see it in the photo above. Fairy lights twinkled all around as we soaked in the steaming water, a bottle of champagne for company. Total and utter bliss and one of the best things I’ve ever been treated to. And we got some products made from our chosen essential oils to take home too – such a lovely touch to remind you of a special day.

IMG_8178IMG_8105IMG_8177

Being preened and pampered is actually quite thirsty work, so after clambering out of the hot tub and heading back up to our room for a shower, we slipped into our evening wear and headed to the main hotel for dinner. The Gilpin provide a free chauffeur service for their Lake House guests, and we were whisked off in a pristine white Range Rover.

The main house is just as beautiful as the Lake House – soft lighting, cracking fires and intimate seating make it a perfect spot for a romantic dinner. We started with G&Ts (Hendrick’s and cucumber with Fever Tree Tonic – perfect) in the lounge and chose our food – mushrooms on toast and soup of the day to start, followed by pork for Rob and a steak for me (of course – I always choose the steak!), plus a bottle of red wine for good measure. Our waiter brought us some delicious amuse bouche and then we were seated in the dining room.

The food… oh my. The FOOD. One of our fellow guests (who we got chatting to later over more G&Ts) described it as ‘Michelin star dining without all the faff’ which I think is perfect. The Gilpin doesn’t have a Michelin star but the food is definitely up to that standard – the starters were delicious, the steak melt-in-your-mouth perfect, and the subsequent desserts so moreish I nearly did do an Oliver and ask.

IMG_8130IMG_8139

All too soon morning came, and we had time for breakfast in bed (Eggs Benedict, pastries, fresh yoghurt, toast and juice – delicious) and a walk around the grounds before we were heading back to Leeds.

I’ve never really had an experience like my stay at the Gilpin – it was pure luxury without being snooty, decadent but still homely and no detail was overlooked. The staff were wonderfully friendly to everyone and the Jetty Spa Trail is something I’d recommend a hundred times over to anyone looking to pamper a loved one.

I’ve had the absolute pleasure of doing lots of fun things because of this blog, but this is one of the few experiences that totally took my breath away. The generosity and kindness of the Cunliffe family who own and run the Gilpin and their wonderful PR team is almost unmatched in my experience.

I couldn’t recommend a stay at the Gilpin more – we’ll be back next year when we need a pick-me-up. The sooner the better!

To celebrate the launch of the new Jetty Spa, Gilpin Lake House has a special mid-week winter offer of a free Spa Trail (worth £300 per couple) for guests staying at the Lake House who are celebrating a birthday, anniversary or ‘mini-moon’ (valid for stays Mon-Thurs until 31stMarch 2014. Confirmation of celebration required).

*Our stay at The Gilpin, the Jetty Spa Trail and our meals were provided free of charge for review purposes.
