New Season, New Specs

As fellow four-eyes can confirm, the world of prescription spectacles is sprawling, confusing and often a bit blurry. There are so many styles, so many options and you’re expected to part with a hefty sum of cash without ever properly SEEING what you’re buying. Scary.

For all these reasons and more, I’ve never been loyal to a particular opticians or spectacle brand. I chop and change every time I need (want) a new pair, trying out different services and styles – I’m usually swayed by free eye tests, 1-hour turnarounds and new launches, like Orla Kiely at Boots Opticians.

So, I’m an old hand at this spectacle game, but when something new comes along I like to give it a whirl. A few weeks ago I was contacted by David H Myers and asked if I’d like to try their Personal Shopping Service. For glasses? Ok, sure…

I headed off to my appointment bright one Tuesday morning and was whisked off for my eye test. Eye tests are pretty standard across the board, but my optometrist did that little bit extra to explain each part of the test to me, including the awesomely weird photo of my retina.

Then it was time to choose some frames, and this is where the Personal Shopping Service comes into play. I have a pretty good idea of what I like and what suits me when it comes to specs, but it was fantastic to have someone there who really knew their stuff. My specs specialist Matt picked out frames I wouldn’t have chosen for myself but that worked really well – he looked at my face shape, my colouring, even picking up on my big earrings and ring to (correctly) predict I liked statement frames.

We whittled it down to five pairs – two from Prada and three from Oliver Peoples. In Leeds, David H Myers are exclusive stockists of Oliver Peoples and as the brand is quite new to me, it was great to get a proper introduction from someone really knowledgeable on the brand’s style and history.

With five pairs in the running, we sat down and took some iPad photos. One of the absolute WORST parts of choosing new specs is not being able to see what they look like, or being forced in front of an industrial-strength camera unit to take awful, awkward photos under harsh strip lighting. Those photos never, ever reflect how you’ll truly look in your glasses and are always heinously unflattering. I don’t know why more opticians don’t do this – five quick snaps on an iPad meant I could see the glasses properly and the relaxed nature meant no grimacing. Perfect.

After a bit more posing and preening and a talk through with Matt, we decided on a pair of the Oliver Peoples. I also got thinned, coated lenses as my prescription is high and I wear my glasses all day, every day (and most of the night).

Ta-dah! I’m so pleased – the bold frame is just the right amount of fierce while the soft yellow shade on the inside really flatters my paleness. And the best thing is, I wouldn’t have picked these myself – they look quite nondescript when they’re not being worn – so the Personal Shopping Service was a real winner.

David H Myers is the only independent opticians in Leeds city centre. You’ll find the amazing team at 72-74 Albion Street and the Personal Shopping Service is entirely free for all customers. I can’t recommend it enough and think my flighty nature has finally been tamed… I’ll definitely be back again!

Discover Beauty Event – John Lewis Oxford St Tonight

Autumn is my favourite makeup season – ruby red lips, inky nails and cheeks flushed from the cold (and a Bobbi Brown cream blush). I love the jewel tones, the matte finishes and the end of summer’s ‘barely there’ looks. Give me a full-coverage foundation any day.

So I was delighted to be invited to tonight’s autumnal beauty event at John Lewis Oxford Street. John Lewis are launching their new Autumn/Winter ranges from brands including Dior, Aveda, Liz Earle, Nails Inc, Ren and St Tropez, and I’ll be chatting through my top 5 autumnal picks alongside Grazia’s Beauty Team. An evening talking makeup while sipping Champagne and enjoying complimentary treatments? Sounds good to me. Oh, and there’s a goody bag too. Lovely stuff.

The event kicks off at 6pm tonight at John Lewis Oxford Street, so if you’re doing a bit of after-work shopping, pop in and treat yourself… Or just go for that free champagne. No judgement.

Tickets are available by calling 020 3073 0592. See you there?

Old Clothes

Posted in Daily Outfits, Fashion.

I often go through stages where I think I have literally nothing to wear. It’s that kind of empty-wardrobe panic that prompts me to say ‘if I don’t go shopping I’ll have to walk around naked/in my PJs for the rest of my life‘ while stomping about and huffing a lot.

I do have things to wear, though. Of course I do. I have a 27-year shopping habit (you know I was planning my baby gro in the womb) and zero spare coat hangers – go figure. So bearing in mind my upcoming wedding, paltry house deposit and overwhelming shoe collection, today I decided to put away my Visa and delve into the depths of my wardrobe.

After much delving, I came up for air (it’s hard to breathe with a mouthful of polyester tea dress) clutching this Zara dress. I bought it before I started my last ‘proper’ job, so it’s about 3 years old. That’s about as old as things get in my wardrobe – I love a clean slate and often conduct mass clear-outs of my clothing, donating bags and bags to charity. It makes me feel better about filling my life with more grey marl t-shirts and Whistles dresses.

So yes. This is an old dress, in Jen terms. And the best thing about it? Not the money-saving or solution to my nothing-to-wear panic, but the fact it looks better on me now than it did when I first bought it. Cashback.

Do you hold on to clothes or are you a perpetual purger, like me?

The 5:2 Fasting Diet

Posted in Food.

I’m one of those awful people who has never dieted. For 23ish years, I relied on good genes and that mysterious ‘fast metabolism’ to keep me in burgers, crisps and chocolate. And it worked… until my mid-twenties loomed. Suddenly Topshop size 10s felt snug and I had a distinct hint of the double chins.

I was generally fine with it, though – I love food so much, that portion of chips was worth the extra dress size. And so it went for a few years. Until The Wedding.

Weddings do strange things to people. When I first started planning I was determined I wouldn’t be The Bride Who Slimmed Into Her Wedding Dress. I was also determined I’d be totally chilled out throughout the whole process and would never utter the words ‘peach taffeta’, but things change. Luckily not the peach taffeta (definitely none of that, don’t worry Team Bridesmaid), but once my wedding dress was ordered I did feel the need to lose those extra pounds (and I have raised my voice more than once in the planning process. Chilled, I ain’t).

A year ago I got back in the gym and started running again. Sadly I am hopelessly lazy so both these things fell by the wayside. I tried to eat healthily throughout the week but kept getting sidetracked by Nando’s and the pub and a trip to Barcelona. I bought a bike and happily have kept that up, but it was only after reading that losing weight is ‘70% diet, 30% exercise’ did I realise my eating habits needed to change if I wanted to see a real difference.

So I started the Fasting Diet.
5:2 fasting diet

I actually prefer to call it the 5:2 Eating Plan because I’m a pretentious a-hole, but in reality it is about fasting. Two days a week you ‘fast’ – consuming no more than 500 calories. The other five days you eat as normal.

The first week was hellish, but I soon slipped into a routine. There are lots of different ways of splitting calories throughout your fast days, but I tend to save mine for dinner. I drink lots of water throughout the day and have a 100-cal snack around 3pm – Graze boxes are great for this. Then I have 400 calories to play with for my evening meal, which goes much further than you’d think. Above are some of my favourite dishes – Chicken Noodle Soup, Haloumi Salad, Mushroom and Bacon Risotto and Smoky Mexican Bean Soup. All under 400 calories and all coming up on the Anti-Recipe soon!

Now I find my fast days pretty easy. I feel hungry but it’s never unmanageable. I’m not weak or dizzy or lacking concentration – fasting days are just like normal days apart from the odd stomach rumble. After 7 weeks, my stomach has shrunk so I need less food in general and I feel brighter, more alert and less sluggish. Oh, and I’ve lost 10lbs. Take that, wedding dress.

I know fasting isn’t for everyone. I would never recommend this to anyone with health problems, who is pregnant or prone to disordered eating. It’s not a long-term thing for me – as cliché as it is, on my honeymoon I’ll be hitting the restaurants of Santorini with considerable force. But I hope this way of eating has taught me enough about food to keep up some semblance of the plan – now I pay more attention to what’s actually in the food I eat, I’m constantly surprised at how bad seemingly healthy options can be.

For anyone looking for a reasonably quick and easy way to lose a moderate amount of weight, do some research on fasting and draw your own conclusions. I found the following resources really helpful:

Kate Harrison’s 5:2 Diet Book – great for newbies with lots of information about how the plan works
The 5:2 Intermittent Fasting Facebook group – request to join to see the content, very supportive group
Lavender and Lovage food blog – lots of amazing under-500-cal recipes on here, and beautiful photography

Are you interested in the 5:2 Diet? Would you ever try it?

Disclaimer: I am in no way qualified to give nutritional advice. This is a summary of my personal experience with fasting. Any diet should be taken on with care and those at risk should always seek professional advice before starting a reduced calorie eating plan.

After reading the title of this post, are you now singing the song? Yes, me too. Sorry about that.

Recently I’ve been loving very simple, paired-down outfits – classic skinny jeans, well-cut blazers, printed tops and a nice, stylish shoe. Done.
