My American Roadtrip – Can You Help?

Posted in Blogging, Travel.

Way back in January, I wrote a post about travelling. I admitted that I’m not very well-travelled and have actually never ventured outside of Europe. I also wrote about an upcoming American roadtrip – my first big holiday, ever.

Time has sped away from me since then and the big American roadtrip is now NEXT WEEK! We leave on Thursday and will be visiting Chicago, New York and Maine with a very brief stop in Boston. To say I’m excited would be the understatement of the year. I am literally bouncing off the walls with glee!

In Chicago we have a tour guide in the shape of my lovely sister-in-law-to-be Jen, who’ll be taking us up the Hancock Tower, to see the Bean, to watch a gospel choir (I think breakfast is involved there somewhere too – amazing!), to eat good Mexican and to watch a live Blues Band.

I’ve been dreaming of visiting New York since I first saw an episode of Friends aged 13, so I have a long list of things I want to see and do. Visits to the Empire State Building and Statue of Liberty are musts, I’ve got to get inside Bloomingdales, want to explore the vintage shops of Brooklyn and eat a cupcake from The Magnolia Bakery.

In Maine we’re staying with family who I know will show us an amazing time – I’m thinking trips out on the water, fresh lobster and maybe even a visit to Cabot Cove? (Okay, I know it doesn’t exist, but that would be so cool).

So this is where you come in – do you have any recommendations to share? Lovely bloggers Clare and Lily have already sent me long lists of their favourite places (thank you ladies!) but I’d love to hear from you too. If you’ve discovered the BEST restaurant, found a fantastic vintage shop, had an amazing time at a particular attraction or wandered off the beaten track to great success, let me know. I want to do as much as I can while out there so all ideas – no matter how unusual – are welcomed!

I can’t wait to read your stories – thanks for sharing!

PS – FYI potential burglars – we have a house sitter while we’re away! 😉

How To Curl Short Hair

Posted in Beauty, Daily Outfits.

I have a long history of being rubbish with my hair. I’m obsessed with my eyebrows and will spend forever perfecting a bright pink pout, but my hair is done within three minutes and never commands much attention.

Sadly, that’s not because it’s naturally wonderful and looks effortlessly perfect – quite the opposite. My hair is fine and flat and poker straight, has never held a curl and reacts to any kind of ‘teasing’ with a crap-ton of static. Back in the day I had waist-length hair that drove me insane with its inability to do ANYTHING (see evidence here) and my frustration led to a dramatic makeover in 2009 – I went for the chop.

I’ve had short hair for more than three years now and although I love the simplicity of it, for the past few months I’ve been yearning for long, luscious waves. Queue some serious growing and an amazing new tool – the Remington Pearl Curling Wand.

The photo on the left was taken after my first go at curling my hair in about four years. I uploaded it to Instagram and lots of people asked me how I did it, so I thought a quick post might be useful!

I bought my curling wand from Amazon for £20. At first I was skeptical – there’s no clamp, so you have to wind the hair around the burning hot wand by hand. WEAR THE HEATPROOF GLOVE! And watch your neck – I have a nice burn to prove just how hot this thing is. It takes a bit of hand/eye coordination to get used to the technique but once you’ve got it, it’s really quick and easy.

I started by blowdrying my hair as I’ve been doing for years – I use John Frieda Brilliant Brunette Volumising Mousse and Bumble and Bumble Thickening Creme and rough dry upside down. Then I just went at it in a random fashion and curled whatever I could get my hands on – I’m not the sectioning type. For my first style (left) I used the thicker end of the wand for looser, less structured curls. For today’s look (right), I used the narrower part of the wand which made the curls tighter and a bit more uniform. To finish both looks, I separated the curls with my fingers, scrunched with some wax and then set with Bastise Dry Shampoo (much nicer than hairspray and still gives great hold).

The most impressive thing about the Remington Pearl wand is the staying power of the curls – my hair has never been able to sustain a curl for more than an hour but these guys stuck around all day yesterday, despite numerous trips out in the rain, and even remained wavy after brushing out that evening. Today’s are holding even better because they were tighter to start with.

If you have straight, short hair and you’re looking for a way to inject a little body and bounce, I’d really recommend this wand. Easy to use, great results and cheap to boot – what’s not to love?

Are you high maintenance with your hair or do you let it fly free?

Fashion Bloggers and Brands – a Book on Fashion Blogging

Posted in Blogging, Fashion.

Last year I was approached by lovely Jo, Fashion & Retail Editor at iCrossing, about contributing to a book on fashion blogging. I could bang on for days about blogging so was delighted to be asked and couldn’t wait to get involved. I was commissioned to write a piece about the evolution of fashion bloggers and got stuck in straightaway.

The research was fascinating – I followed fashion blogging way back to 2002 when the first blogs were just starting to emerge and covered the growing trend through the wilderness years (no Fashion Week invites back then), the Susie Bubble years and the boom years. I had some help from top bloggers Michelle, Lily and Muireann and after a few edits, I submitted my piece for publication.

All that was way back in December 2011 and I’ve been dying to see the finished results ever since. Happily, a printed copy of the book popped through my letterbox this week and I read it cover-to-cover.

The book features articles by, interviews with and photographs from some of the UK’s biggest bloggers (and I don’t include myself in that) – Mademoiselle Robot, Be Frassy, The Clothes Whisperer, Magpie Girl and Wish Wish Wish are all in there, looking fab and making sense. There’s some really interesting insight into the world of fashion blogging, from working with brands to making it a business. And editor Jo’s piece on working with fashion bloggers from a brand perspective is fascinating.

I’d really recommend giving this a read – not just because I’m in it, but also because it’s a really insightful look ‘behind-the-scenes’ of fashion blogs. You can download a PDF of the eBook here or if you want a printed copy like mine, email results@icrossing.co.uk to see if there’s any left. iCrossing are doing more research into blogger/brand relationships so if you’d like to get involved, complete this short survey before 27th May to share your views. There’s £100 in John Lewis vouchers in it for one lucky participant!

What are your thoughts on the blogger/brand relationship? Do you have any stories to share?

Pink Jeans for a Rainy Day

Posted in Blogging, Daily Outfits.

Apologies to any international readers – I’m going to talk about the weather. It is horrible. Endless rain, grey skies, lashing wind… on days like today I just want to curl up on the sofa with my kitten and do some online shopping.

Sadly, the world does not stop for rain. Sigh.

Luckily I had an assortment of pretty things to cheer me up, despite the awful weather. My pink Uniqlo jeans were fresh from the wash – the light colour gets grubby quickly so they’re constantly in the washing machine – so I threw them straight on. They are most unsuitable for a rainy day but I can’t resist that candyfloss shade!

Next to make me smile was the hilarious selection of packages that came through the door. I’m helping to organise my good friend’s hen do, which is next weekend – she sometimes reads here so I won’t divulge the recent arrivals, but let’s just say we’re ‘well equipped’ for the festivities.

Finally, I unwrapped the package lovely Cat from Take Courage sent me and discovered this amazing tote bag. Love. It. How adorable? And of course, you can trust me. I am a fashion blogger, after all.

How’s the weather where you are (I have to ask, I’m British)? Hope you’re all sheltering from the rain!

Sometimes it’s Hard to be a Fashion Blogger

Posted in Blogging, Daily Outfits.

Well, not really.

Taking photos of yourself in clothes is hardly brain surgery, rocket science or any of the other stereotypically testing careers. But some days it’s a real pain in the ass.

When I woke up this morning I had a whole outfit planned, but when I put it on it just didn’t feel right. I wore the dress a few weeks ago in this post and although wearing the same thing in a short period of time doesn’t usually bother me, it just felt too similar. So I changed, but that looked wrong too. After half an hour and a mountain of discarded clothes, I was far from feeling stylish. Clearly, it was one of those days.

So I threw on something simple and boring and not particularly blog-worthy. And then came the question – this is what I wore today, and ‘what I wore today’ posts form the basis of my blog. But what I wore today happens to be uninspired and dull, so should I still post it?

In the end, representing real life won out and you get to see exactly what I wore today, in all its Plain Jane glory. It won’t set the fashion world alight, but it’s all I got.

How do you deal with off days? Do you continue to post those not-quite-there outfits, or is your blog reserved for only the most fabulous get-ups?
