Bravissimo Bra Fitting

Posted in Fashion.

Confession time – Before last week, I’d never had a professional bra fitting. I’ve always just guessed my bra size, and have been a 34D forever. I can’t face trying bras on in shops (there’s something undignified about stripping in a harshly-lit changing room, concealed from the world by only a filmsy polyester curtain) so I grab and run (after paying, obviously).

It’s something that’s always been on my ‘must do now I’m grown up’ list, along with buying an electric toothbrush (done that) and having my eyebrows threaded (done that too, it hurt like a bitch and I’m back to waxing). So when Bravissimo invited me to my local store for a proper bra fitting, I was delighted.

I went along to their shop in Victoria Quarter, Leeds and spent 45 mins having a very thorough fitting. I tried lots of different styles and discovered that, like with clothing, sizing fluctuates. I went from my starting size of a 34D (I was gently chastised for the gaping back and drooping straps) to a 32DD, then a 30E and finally a 30F. It’s amazing how different you look and feel when wearing the right bra – you walk taller, look slimmer, feel more ‘secure’.

The ladies at Bravissimo kindly let me choose a set to take away, although I’ll be back to invest in a few more pieces after payday. Prices range from around £24-£30, so more than your average M&S deal, but look how pretty…

I chose the Freya Alexa set

I was very impressed with the fitting service from Bravissimo and would recommend it to anyone whose cup runneth over.

Have you ever had a professional bra fitting? Did the results surprise you?

Why, hello there. So nice of you to stop by. I hope you’ve had a wonderful week? It’s been a bit of a quiet one at Little Bird HQ – it’s that early-February lull before Fashion Week kicks off – although one very exciting thing did happen this week… we got a house! If you’ve been reading the blog for a while you’ll know we’ve had two near misses with houses recently, but it really is third time lucky and we move into our new place (complete with solid oak doors, exposed beams and wood burning stove) on 5th March. I’ll be kicking off the Second Hand Home challenge (furnishing the place with charity shop, car boot and vintage shop bargains) as soon as we move in.

Here’s what else I’ve been up to this week…

Valentine’s Day isn’t something Rob and I really celebrate – we do nice things for each other all year round, why save it for just one day? We couldn’t resist the V Day special M&S meal though – mozzarella and tomato tartlets, sirloin steak with chunky chips, chocolate and raspberry puddings, a bottle of Cava and a box of chocolate. Delicious.

Tell me – what have you been up to this week? Are you celebrating Valentine’s Day or dismissing it as a Hallmark Holiday (like me)?

PS – I’ve listed half my wardrobe on eBay – anything you fancy?

Wearing: ASOS skirt, Next cardigan, Zara shoes and scarf, Mango ring
On: Wednesday 9th February
For: Feeling all Joan Holloway in the office

Why do all items of clothing now come with those coat hanger ribbons? Doesn’t everyone just snip them out?

The highly irritating and largely useless (considering I fold it up and store it in a drawer) coat hanger ribbons from my Next cardigan. RIP.

My boyfriend (or rather, my fiancé) and I have been together for almost nine years, so I think it’s safe to say we have a pretty solid relationship. We share values, ideals, morals, likes and dislikes. If you wanted to use a Hallmark cliché to describe our pairing, it’d be two peas in a pod.

But he just doesn’t understand my need for ‘stuff’.

Here are a few of the conversations we’ve had about my increasingly erratic second hand purchases…

“That table you bought doesn’t go with anything else in our living room. It looks like you took it from an old person’s house.” (Referring to the dark wood glass top vintage table I picked up for £3)

“Why is that bag hanging there? And those others on the wardrobe door. I always bump into them. Getting into bed is like skiing a slalom.” (The hanging bag is a Chanel paper carrier stuffed with scarves. The bags on the wardrobe door are various canvas shoppers and a wicker handbag I bought at a boot sale)

“You have between seven and eight hundred coats. I have to hang my coat on a piece of scrap wood.” (I do have a ridiculous number of coats and jackets hanging on our coat stand)

“Why are there so many of your shoes here?”
(me) “There aren’t! Mine are in the wardrobe. Those are yours.”
“I have three pairs of shoes in total. These are yours.”
(me) “Oh yeah. And the ones in the wardrobe.”

“Please don’t tell me you’ve bought another tea set. You don’t even drink tea.” (As I walked through the door with a new tea set from a charity shop jaunt)

“I hate this brush.” (Referring to the vintage dressing table brush I bought at a boot sale, which sits on the edge of my dresser and falls off every time he walks past)

“Why can’t I have a wardrobe in the bedroom? I have to have a wardrobe in another room, and it’s still full of your stuff.”

I’m eternally grateful I have him to remind me that I really don’t need another tarnished gold mirror or set of babushka dolls.

Time To Run

Posted in Home.

Before I start writing this piece about my love of physical activity, I have a confession – I hate sports.

It’s true. At school, I faked notes, twisted ankles and ‘women’s problems’ to get out of P.E. I played Goal Keeper in all team games so I could lean against the net and text my boyfriend. I jumped in front of the dodgeball so I’d be out within 2 minutes. Since leaving school almost 10 years ago, I’ve flailed around half-heartedly at the back of a few aerobics classes, and I’ve giggled my way through an hour or two of street dance, but most of my adult life has been exercise-free. And I liked it.

Last year I noticed the fast metabolism I’d always relied on to keep me in skinny jeans was slowing down. Size 12s were replaced with size 14s. Climbing stairs was tiring. I drove 80 miles a day, ate frozen pizzas and slumped in front of the TV, night after night. It left me feeling sluggish, unhappy and desperate for change. So I got a new job, bought some trainers that weren’t Converse Hi Tops and joined a gym.

I’ve been going to the gym for six months now and I’m still not its biggest fan. I love how I feel after a run, but getting to the end is HARD. I’m still scared of all the weight machines and I sing along to my iPod out loud. But at least I’m doing it. After taking these pictures I went to the gym and ran 5k – not a great distance by any means but man, it felt good.

Bangs inspired me to start running, and the posts she writes about her experiences and challenges are a great source of information for anyone getting into exercise. Her guide to sports bras made me really think about what I wear to run. The two areas that need the most support are your boobs and your feet – a well-fitting sports bra is essential, and your feet take most of the strain so they need looking after. I’m on the look out for some new trainers after experiencing pain in my feet – anyone who runs will tell you this is one thing you don’t want to scrimp on.

I run twice a week and have finally reached the stage where I don’t want to collapse in a sweaty heap after 10 minutes. It’s far from glamorous and after a long day at work/heavy Saturday night it’s often the last thing I want to do, but I do it. And I feel so much better for it.

Are you a runner, or do you prefer other forms of exercise? What are your tips for keeping fit?
