Sunday Smile #6

Posted in Daily Outfits, Fashion.

I know Sunday Smiles are supposed to be non-fashion related… but sometimes, my entire week revolves around one outfit. And this was one of those weeks!

On Friday night I was a guest at the Chernobyl Children’s Project ball. It was in a very posh place, with very posh people and very posh food. So obviously, I needed a very posh dress. But I don’t really ‘do’ posh – I’m a casual dresser (as you well know) and I hate the thought of beautiful dresses hidden away with no occasion to attend. With that in mind, I hit the high street to find a something I could dress up for the night and keep wearing afterwards.

I just adore this Zara maxi dress. At £40, it was pretty cheap in ball gown terms and I know I’ll be wearing it all summer long with gladiator sandals, a skinny belt and a denim jacket. It’s definitely making me smile this week! What do you think? Did I make it black tie beautiful? Would you have gone for something different? And what are YOU smiling about this Sunday? Do tell!

PS – Today was the GalaxyFM Style Hunt interview. I was very, very nervous and HATED being filmed when answering the questions, but overall I think it went well! I’ll hear from them some time this week so will be sure to let you know what happens. Here’s my ‘favourite casual outfit’ – I also wore my ‘favourite going out outfit’ but didn’t get a chance to snap it. Fingers crossed for me!

Remember how I told you all I wasn’t much of a fan of simplistic style? Well… I’m eating my words just a little. Yesterday I went shopping in Zara and Gap. Could two shops pioneer a simple, laidback style any more than these two? Probably not. I picked up a few breton stripe tops, plain tees and these wonderful peg legs.

I just adore these trousers. They’re a little bit military, perfectly flattering and oh-so comfortable. I can’t wait to wear them all summer long, with wedges, heels, pumps and gladiators. Have you bought any summer staples recently?

Tonight the Mr and I are slipping on our dancing shoes (well, I’ll be wearing my dancing shoes. He’ll be wearing his 30 second shuffle shoes) and heading out to a charity ball. My future family-in-law work very closely with the Chernobyl Children’s Project and the ball is being thrown to raise money for children over in Belarus.

I’ve got the most wonderful floral maxi dress to wear – yesterday on Twitter I asked for tips on how to style it appropriately for a black tie event. I’m hoping some killer heels, statement jewellery and a smart clutch will be enough – what do you think? Any advice? Are you doing anything special this Bank Holiday weekend? Do share!

GalaxyFm’s Style Hunt – I’m in!

Posted in Daily Outfits, Fashion.

If you follow me on Twitter (and if you don’t, you should!) you may have seen my excited tweeting about GalaxyFM’s Style Hunt. And if not, let me spin you a tale…

A few weeks ago, as I frantically skipped radio stations to avoid Justin Bieber (seriously, Radio1? At 7.55am?! On a MONDAY?!!), I stopped on an advert for Galaxy’s Style Hunt. They were looking for Britain’s most stylish sister, and most importantly – someone with a fashionable prowess that didn’t break the bank. As Little Bird is all about my fashion, not high fashion, I reckoned this competition had my name on it. And the trip to NYC and £5K prize swung it a bit, too.

I sent in a photo (from this post, actually. Hey, if it’s good enough for ASOS…) and promptly forgot about it. Until yesterday, when I got a phone call from a VERY EXCITED LOCAL DJ!!!! who told me I’d been shortlisted and was in the top 20 for the Yorkshire region. Yikes!!

On Sunday I’ll be visiting the Galaxy studios for an interview and photoshoot. What concerns me most isn’t what to wear (I’m hoping you’ll help me out there) but the fact that my voice sounds seriously mannish when recorded. I feel this alone will scupper my chances! So I’ve been practising my interview technique and buying new shoes. Ooops.

I’ve got to wear my most stylish casual outfit (I think I’m good here – casual is my bag) and my most fabulous going out outfit (bit worried about this… my going out outfits are my casual outfits with heels!). After Sunday two girls will be chosen from Yorkshire, along with two girls from the other regions Galaxy goes out to. The 12 finalists will then be stuck under the ever-critical nose of the general public for a vote.

So, dear followers. It’s time to girdle your loins and help me pick two outfits to WOW them! I’m imagining an X Factor style public humiliation-type setting, so let’s make them winners. Take a look at a few past looks that you’ve loved…

All good, but all casual! Bugger it! So tell me, my friends – what shall I wear? Have I already rocked the perfect outfit, or should I go for something new? I know I want to stick to my usual brand of girly retro style, but other than that I’m open to ideas and would love to know what you think. Somehow I don’t think today’s outfit will cut it…

Wardrobe Wonderings – light denim

Posted in Daily Outfits, Fashion.

Every week, I’ll be taking one of your Wardrobe Wonderings and answering it in full here on the blog. We’re kicking off with…

How do I wear light denim?

This wasn’t the exact question asked – I’ve taken a little creative license to make it more open. And I really, really wanted to premier my new chambray playsuit (Primark, £9)!

Light denim can be tricky to pull off, especially if you’re a curvaceous babe like me. It’s sometimes unflattering, can add unwanted lbs and wash out pale skin. It’s also synonymous with a dressed down, casual look. So how can you make it work for…

A shopping trip?

I’ve gone for a nautical theme, perfect for a summer shopping trip. Adding a silk scarf (vintage, £1), bird brooch (Helpless Romantic, £8), striped vest (Matalan, £4) and flat pumps (Primark, £8) keeps it casual and comfortable.

A night out?

Although it’s a relaxed fabric, light denim is easily dressed up for dancing the night away. This black blazer (Primark, £13) gives a luxe feel and the belt (vintage, £5) adds shape. The look is finished off with a statement necklace (thrifted, £2), leather clutch (Accessorize, £22) and sky high wedges (New Look, £15).

Meeting the parents?

Keeping it cute is the key to charming the parents! A simple polka dot tee (Topshop, £10), matching tights (Topshop, £5) and pretty patent sandals (New Look, £10) make for perfect girlfriend material. I’m also wearing my gold name necklace (MyNameNecklace.com, £22) and gold leaf bracelet (Eclectic Eccentricity, £15.50).

A day at the beach?
Photobucket

Let me just say – light denim was MADE for the beach! A headscarf (H&M, £6) keeps unruly hair at bay and a simple leather belt (H&M, £5) is an easy way to add shape. Leather gladiator sandals (New Look, £10), a straw bag (thrifted, £2.99) and classic sunnies (Rayban, £109) finish the look.

And there you have it! Four ways to wear light denim, dressed up or down.  These looks definitely work for the warmer weather and I can’t wait to road test them all.

Do you have a favourite, or would you work light denim a different way? I’d love to know!

PS – If you’ve got a Wardrobe Wondering, why not let me know and I’ll do my best to answer it. Stop by next week for another style solution!

PPS – Did you notice the changing location of today’s shoot? I was playing a hilarious game of hide and seek with the man who mows our lawn. In that last picture I had to crop him out as he walked into the shot! Oh, the absolute and utter shame.

Oh, the perils of outfit photography in public places – as I was snapping in the sun this morning, a lady from my building came and stood at the bus stop right next to me. Trés embarrassing! Have you ever suffered an unfortunate photographic incident, all for the sake of your blog?

Today is your last chance to ask me an oh-so stylish question in time for tomorrow’s special Wardrobe Wonderings post. I’ll be taking one question and answering it in full, complete with outfit suggestions and top tips! So if fashion’s playing on your mind, ask away. Until then, dear followers…
