Everyday Spring Beauty

spring beauty products

When the sun start shining and the days get longer, I like to switch up my everyday makeup for the lighter shades of spring.

Spring is an inbetween-y season – the skies may be blue but the temperature can plummet in a moment and it’s windy, rainy and sometimes even snowy. British Isles, how we love you.

I like to stick with my full-coverage base and add freshness with pinky shades. Here are a few of my most recent purchases…

Topshop Cream Blush in Afternoon Tea, £7
I adore cream blushers all year round but they’re particularly good for the warmer months. I have a few shades from Topshop’s collection and this bright pink adds life to my sometimes-sallow skin. The formula is silky smooth and really long lasting.

Revlon ColorBurst Matte Balm in Elusive, £7.99
I loved the first collection of Revlon ColorBurst balms (or Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stains, as they were called) and although the new formulas aren’t quite as great in my opinion, I do love this colour. A pretty pinky shade that’s perfect for an everyday face.

Benefit Gimme Brow in Light/Medium, £17.50
Benefit is my top choice for brows. I get mine shaped and tinted at their Brow Bar and use the Instant Brow Pencil to fill, but the new Gimme Brow gel takes things to another level. It’s a thickener that clings to hair and skin to ‘volumise’ brows, with amazing results.

Victor & Rolf Flowerbomb Eau de Parfum, £68
I’m a bit of a perfume junkie and this is one of my favourite scents for spring – light and floral with notes of rose, jasmine and orchid. The fragrance lingers all day and it smells so good I wear it day in, day out.

Benefit The POREfessional, £22
An oldie but a goodie. I’ve been using this for a few years now and season to season, it never fails to keep my face in place. It’s a great base for foundation and helps makeup go on smoothly.

Essie Nail Polish in Lapiz of Luxury, £7.99
The easiest way to bring spring to your makeup bag is with a pastel polish. Essie’s Lapiz of Luxury is a little more wearable than super-girly pinks and the subtle blue shade works for day and night.

So that’s what’s in my spring makeup bag… what about you?

Breaking Out The Florals

This time of year is always a tricky one to dress for. This morning I was so desperate to shed the boots and coats of winter that I found myself wearing a striped sundress and minimal cardigan. NO. This is not right. After some tough talk from my cat Lily (who gave me a very disdainful look) and a few minutes hanging my arm out of the window to gauge the temperature, I finally compromised with a pair of ‘jazzy’ (factual description from two friends, given individually) trousers.

I’ve had these trousers for a few years now and they’re always the first thing I pull out of summer storage when the sun finally shows its face – the bold, floral print is a really easy way to brighten up an all-black (my current colour of choice, alongside pink) outfit. They make me feel infinitely more cheerful because I know as soon as it’s warm enough to wear them, summer can’t be far off.

Things To Do In Edinburgh

Oh, Edinburgh. How I adore you.

If you’ve been reading the blog for a little while, you’ll probably know about my love affair with Edinburgh. After visiting many years ago for work I was enthralled with the city, which felt like a bigger, more vibrant version of my beloved York. I went back for Hogmanay 2013 and again for Jen Do last summer, but absence makes the heart grow fonder so after 6 months I found myself back again.

There was no special occasion for visiting this time – no impeding wedding or incoming New Year. I was contacted by Travelodge who asked if I’d like to stay in one of their recently-refurbished hotels, and as Edinburgh’s Queen Street location was on the list, I thought – why not? Sometimes the best trips are those without much pomp and circumstance – just you, the city and daily life.

Rob and I headed up the East Coast line from York and arrived in Edinburgh on Saturday morning. We found Queen Street easily – not only is it just off Princes Street and about 5 mins from the train station, but it’s the same street I stayed on during Jen Do, so lots of happy memories there.

Queen Street Travelodge is housed in a beautiful Georgian townhouse, perfectly located for enjoying the city without too much hustle and bustle. Inside is standard Travelodge fare, but everything feels very fresh and new. Our room was small but functional and spotlessly clean, with clever storage facilities and a Dreamer Bed which was a literal dream to sleep on. Rooms here start at £29 a night which is really quite unbeatable and perfect for a budget weekend in the city.

After dropping off our bags we headed out to explore. Edinburgh is a big city but it never feels overwhelming – you can wander about quite happily with no real plan, just taking in the sights. We walked down Rose Street and towards the Castle (which is a great landmark for getting your bearings), going up for the obligatory photos then strolling around the Grassmarket area below.

Away from Princes Street, Edinburgh has a brilliant indie scene with lots of fantastic shops, cafes, restaurants and bars. Mary’s Milk Bar is always a favourite and we came away with two milkshakes – hazelnut for me (majorly good) and beer and peanut for Rob (apparently he liked it!).

Day two dawned bright and sunny so we walked the length of the Royal Mile and decided to climb Arthur’s Seat.

Rob and I were blown away – figuratively and literally, as it was crazy windy up there! The climb is relatively tough and we were knackered when we hit the summit, but the views were totally spectacular. Nature is so awesome! It took around an hour to get there, get up and get back down again so it’s an easy trip to fit into your day, and you can reward yourself with a G&T when you’re back on the Royal Mile.

We crammed so much into our 17ish hours in Edinburgh. Here’s a little list of some of our favourite spots:

Papii, Hanover St
A cute little cafe serving brilliant breakfasts. We had Summer Breeze smoothies followed by Vanilla Buttermilk Waffles with bacon (me) and bananas (Rob). Amazing.

The Dogs, Hanover St
We went to The Dogs for dinner during our Hogmanay visit – it’s a brilliant restaurant decked out with vintage furniture. This time we did lunch – a perfect macaroni cheese for me and a chicken and leek pie for Rob. So, so good.

The Basement, Broughton St
We stumbled upon The Basement on Saturday afternoon and stayed for a few hours, loving the dark and cosy atmosphere… and the G&Ts! They make guacamole to order right at your table which was fun AND delicious.

Lovecrumbs, West Port
Lovecrumbs was by far my favourite stop on our trip. It’s been recommended to me many times and I can’t believe I didn’t visit earlier – a gorgeous vintage-style cafe stuffed with eclectic furniture, hanging plants and retro curiosities, serving delicious cakes and frothy coffees.

Lucky Liquor, Queen Street
This seriously cool bar serves up weird and wonderful cocktails in a 50s Americana setting – I had a gin and orange cocktail in an actual lightbulb. Great atmosphere, too.

Bramble Bar, Queen Street
A bit further along Queen Street is Bramble Bar – a gin bar with plenty of cosy alcoves to curl up in… although I was more inclined to dance to the old school hip hop.

What To Wear When Travelling

2014 is shaping up to become a good one, travel-wise. In a couple of weeks I’m heading to Edinburgh, then I have a month of madness – New York, Oregon, Andalusia. I’m also hoping for a little 1 year wedding anniversary trip in September, funds allowing. That’s a lot of travelling which means a lot of long waits in airports, cramped journeys in small seats and lugging overweight bags about.

Coatigan, Free People | Jumper, ASOS | Jeans, Topshop | Trainers, Nike Free at ASOS | Bag, c/o Antler | Sunglasses, Orla Kiely

I was asked by Antler to create my perfect outfit to wear for travelling. If you’re unfamiliar with the brand, Antler have been creating pioneering luggage for nearly 100 years, and I was given the beautiful Elspeth Tote to help make my travelling outfit both stylish and practical.

I teamed the tote with jeans – I know the general consensus is denim is BAD for travelling as it’s uncomfortable to sit in for long periods of time, but Topshop’s Leigh jeans are more like jeggings than jeans – super soft and stretchy. The perfect travelling outfit for me consists of layers – planes can go from hot to cold in minutes so it’s good to wear separates that you can take off/put back on easily. Antler kindly sent me an ASOS voucher to add to my travelling wardrobe, so I bought this loose grey cotton jumper and layered it over a Uniqlo long-sleeve tee. Over the top is my Free People coatigan which doubles up as a pillow or blanket – very important to choose mulitasking items!

With my ASOS voucher I also bought a pair of Nike Frees – I’m on a real trainer kick at the moment and these are the shoe du jour. They’re crazy comfortable – perfect for sprinting across sprawling airports or stomping the streets of NYC (again with the multitasking!).

To finish off my outfit, I’ve got my sunnies to cover tired travelling eyes and the Elspeth Tote on my arm. As you’d expect from a brand with such a long history of luggage expertise, the bag is packed with handy storage features like inner zips, shoulder straps and a multitude of pockets.

Now I’ve got my airport outfit sorted, here are a few final tips for travelling in comfort and style:

  • Wear your hair down or piled up on the top of your head. Trying to lean back on a ponytail is the worst!
  • Don’t wear jewellery. A tricky one for me (you know how I love my statement necklaces) but after being stopped countless times for making the scanner beep, I’ve learn it’s really not worth the hassle.
  • Wear socks or pack a pair in your hand luggage, particularly if you’re travelling to the USA and will have to remove your shoes at security. Being barefoot in an airport is no fun at all.
  • Take lipstick. Applying a slick of bright lipstick is my favourite way to freshen up after a long journey – it’s easy to apply and brightens your whole face in seconds.
Are you travelling anywhere in 2014? What will you wear for your journey?

GIVEAWAY: Pancake Day

pancake day uk

Pancake Day is one of my favourite celebrations of the year. Not only do you get to legitimately eat as many pancakes as you physically can, but it’s also a sign that spring is on the way. Hooray!

I’m away on a work trip on actual Pancake Day (tomorrow, fact fans!) so Rob and I decided to celebrate on Saturday instead, with a little help from an amazing pancake hamper that you can win…

Pancake Day hamper, c/o Abra-ca-Debora

This gorgeous wicker hamper is packed with everything you need for a perfect pancake day – two packs of Abra-ca-Debora (which is the greatest name for a brand EVER) dutch pancakes, two packs of mini pancakes, two bars of Green & Black’s, a lemon and pots of lemon curd and ginger curb from The English Provender Co. Yum!

There are some really amazing pancake recipes on the Abra-ca-Debora website – the Ice Cream Fudge Brownie Pancake is particularly interesting – but I usually go classic. Golden syrup, a squeeze of lemon and a sprinkling of sugar is a hard combination to beat.

I tried smothering a pancake in lemon curd and topping with fresh fruit too, which was insanely good. Also, the little mini pancakes are ridiculously moreish and so good to just shove in your mouth at regular intervals. The pancakes are super easy to make – a few minutes in the microwave and they’re done and SO tasty. Rob often makes us pancakes for breakfast but it was so nice to do something quick and easy with these… and no washing up after, either!

To celebrate Pancake Day tomorrow, I have one Abra-ca-Debora Pancake Hamper to give away. It won’t reach you in time for the day itself, but everyone knows pancakes are for life and not just Shrove Tuesday.

To enter, just leave a comment on this post and tell me what you have on your pancakes. Don’t forget to use the widget below to log your entry and gain an extra one. Good luck!
