Makeup Classes for Girls with Glasses – Everyday

I’m languishing on my sick bed today, so in an attempt to cheer myself I put on a pretty face. Sadly it didn’t work and I’m still feeling sorry for myself, but I managed to snap some photos. Always the pro.

This is the makeup I wear day in, day out. I like to switch up my lipstick (sometimes it’s a Topshop Rio Rio day – amirite?) and swap brown for black in the eyeshadow department, but I’m a creature of habit.

I love big specs (like these Orla Kiely ones) so I try to balance them out with soft makeup. A light, matte base (here I’m wearing Nearly Nude by Revlon which I LOVE) teamed with pink cheeks (Topshop’s Flushed), smoky eyes (courtesy of the Naked 2 palette and a YEARS old Barry M kohl pencil) and a pop of lip colour – Topshop’s Ooh La La.

A fresh, simple everyday look means I can wear the boldest of frames without fear of looking too… ‘too’. What do you think – how do you balance your glasses with your makeup?

Introducing Lillian

Hello! My name is Lillian.

Way back in January (actually not that long ago, but… poetic licence) Rob and I decided Travis – our 18 month old kitty – needed a pal. Particularly during the winter, when he’s inside away from the cold but also without his neighbourhood cat buddies, he was getting lonely and feeling bored.

So we started searching for a feline friend for our boy. We looked on Gumtree, but buying a kitten online felt a bit weird. After some searching I came across Yorkshire Cat Rescue – a rescue centre for stray and abandoned kitties, based in Yorkshire. Obviously.

After a few emails back and forth, we found out about ‘Sprout’ – a kitten staying with a foster family until she was old enough to leave her mum. As soon as I clapped eyes on the photo of her – sitting in a bowl on top of some kitchen scales – I was smitten. Then came a long 4-week wait as she grew old enough to go off on her own.

Lillian (Lily or Lil for short) has been with us for a few weeks now and has made herself right at home. She’s such a diva – she knows exactly how cute she is and gets away with anything because of it. Despite being the New Girl and her diminutive stature, she is absolutely the boss of the house. Travis was initially terrified of her, but now they’re pretty comfortable with each other.

See?

It’s lovely to see them cuddle together, and their regular ‘mad half hours’ mean Travis has plenty to keep him busy… although he does give Rob the odd exasperated look when Lily’s eating his food/stealing his sofa spot/biting his tail. Well, the boys have to stick together now there are two divas in the house!

(If you’re in Yorkshire and thinking about getting a cat, I really recommend chatting to Yorkshire Cat Rescue. They were fantastic with us, so helpful and friendly. Their Facebook page is regularly updated with cats looking for new homes and the centre will cover neutering and any treatment your kitty needs, including future medical bills for those felines who aren’t at their fittest.)

Do You Buy From Blogs?

Posted in Blogging, Daily Outfits, Fashion.

‘Influence’ is a word much-used in the world of fashion blogging. Bloggers with large audience, high visitor stats and big social followings are ‘influential’. Bloggers on the front row at Fashion Week are there because of their ‘influence’. Those bloggers flown around the world courtesy of a brand’s marketing budget are ‘influencing’ someone.

But what does all this ‘influence’ actually mean? Do the big bloggers influence us to follow a brand on Twitter, to think more positively about the brands they promote, or to actually make a purchase based on a recommendation?

I bought this dress after seeing it on Lily. It’s not a dress I’d buy during a general shopping spree or internet browse – the shape isn’t one I’d usually go for, as big boobs and high necklines aren’t usually best of friends – but I loved it so much on Lily, I thought I’d try it for myself. And I’m very happy with my purchase.

The transition from ‘blog reader’ to ‘online purchaser’ is over in a matter of clicks. I’ve succumbed to the lure of internet shopping via blogs many times – as well as Lily, Kate, Lily Pebbles and Kristabel have all pushed me to purchase. The jump from reader to shopper is so simple, it’s easy to see where that ‘influencer’ tag comes from.

For me, the big bloggers – like The Blonde Salad, Susie Bubble and The Man Repeller – are Brand Influential. They reposition luxury labels in a way that makes them more accessible, boosting recognition and visibility. Seeing The Glamourai wearing Isabel Marant booties may encourage me to add them to my mental wishlist, but I won’t drop £500+ on shoes just because a blogger wore them. On the other hand, blogs like Wish Wish Wish and Jazzabelle’s Diary introduce me to brands and products I wouldn’t necessarily pick out myself, but at £20-50 a pop I can afford to give them a go. From my purse-point, these more budget-focused blogs are Purchase Influential.

What do you think – have you ever bought something after seeing it on a blog? Which bloggers have you reaching for your Visa? And what do you think of blogging ‘influence’?

“You Look Lovely and Orange Today”

I’m quite enjoying wearing separates at the moment. Sweaters and shirts, worn with jeans or trousers, chunky boots and statement necklaces. This bold, bright jumper is a particular favourite, as it does all the work for me. Who cares if you’re wearing the same jeans you’ve worn for the last 3 weeks if your top half glows like the neon sign of a strip club? No one, that’s who.

I’ve had a long, tiring couple of weeks whizzing around the country for various work things, so it’s nice to come back home and shrug on some comfortable clothing. I wore a version of this outfit for my one day at London Fashion Week and was ‘street style snapped’ four times… something that never happens. I guess looking comfortable (and possibly wearing an eye-searingly bright colour) was working for me.

I had a bit of an extended blog break while I recovered from travelling, tried (and failed) to buy a house and raised a kitten baby (more on her soon). It’s nice to be back.

How To Wear Hi-Top Trainers

Posted in Daily Outfits, Fashion.

You know those girls who look really awesomely cool and still feminine when wearing huge clunking shoes, baggy jeans and a Varsity jacket? Yeah. I’m not one of those girls.

I tend to shy away from more masculine fashion trends as I just can’t pull them off. Something to do with having size 8 feet and a size 12 ass – I need clothes that indicate a waist in between. Hi-top trainers have been on my No, No, NO list for a long time, but my inner gangster was dying to give them a try…

So I went there. When I spied these cute black/grey spotty hi-tops on Sarenza I couldn’t resist, despite knowing they’d make make my feet look like boats. And they do. But paired with form-fitting black and some matchy-matchy dots, maybe only small tug boats.

What do you think of hi-top trainers? Would you wear them?
