Polka Dot Trousers/Jeans for Less

Posted in Daily Outfits, Fashion.

Last season, the fash pack went mad for Topshop’s polka dot cigarette pants. They came in bottle green and navy blue and were worn by magazine editors and top bloggers alike. At Fashion Week last September I saw so many pairs of polka dotted legs, my eyes went a bit funny. When I eventually caved and decided I had to have a pair, Topshop was completely sold out. Eventually I found some in River Island and wore them like my life depended on it. I loved them but at £40, they weren’t cheap.

Fast forward a year and I’m thinking about my autumn wardrobe again, keeping my eyes peeled for early buys and bargains. While idly wandering around Matalan looking for a dress I’d seen in a magazine, I spotted something. Literally. Polka dot jeans, very similar to Topshop’s sold out style, for £16? Yes please!

Matalan is quite hit and miss, quality-wise, but happily these jeans fit rather nicely. They don’t go baggy after 30 seconds of sitting, they don’t constantly fall down and they’re a little high waisted, which is always good in my book.

I wore my new jeans for a day in London – these photos are from a gloriously sunny Hyde Park.

It’s great to try new trends but investing in the latest pieces can be expensive. If I don’t love something straightaway I hang tight, avoid the bandwagon and bide my time. Trends filter through the high street at various speeds – directional companies like Topshop and Zara will pick them up quickly but it takes longer for them to reach cheaper stores like Primark and Matalan. If you’re willing to wait awhile, you can make some serious savings.

Do you shop the trends on the high street? Let me know if you’ve found anything amazing recently!

EDIT – These jeans are now £10! Even more of a bargain.

Life through my Instagram lens…

What I Wore instagram blog post
After seeing this amazing post by Elle, I rushed out to spend £80 (!!) on various bangles and bracelets. I love mixing neons with studded leather – an easy way to accessorise an otherwise simple outfit.

A rare sunny day earlier this month meant I could wear one of my favourite dresses, sans tights. This printed yellow cutey is from Matalan and cost a whopping £16. Every time I wear it I’m asked if it’s still available and sadly it’s not, but keep an eye on the Matalan site for similarly sweet pieces.

I’ve already mentioned my intense love for knomo and my new Lille bag, but here she is again. Sigh.

If you haven’t raided your local PoundLand for Stila stock, I’m judging you. I picked up these two palettes for, yep, you guessed it – £2. I keep checking back for more items – I’ve heard rumours of tinted moisturiser, eyeshadow and face powder – but if I can’t get hold of anything else, I’m going to transfer some of my round shadows into these babies.

I was so sad to miss the launch of Wish Magazine back in May (silly USA holiday of a lifetime!) but delighted when the mag finally went on sale and I got my hands on a copy. It’s such a beautiful magazine – visually stunning, well-written, engaging and spot on for anyone who feels a bit bored with traditional mags. Lovely stuff indeed!

Despite not drinking tea or coffee, the fab folks at teapigs sent me this big box of samples to share with my friends and family. It currently resides on my desk in Duke Studios, making me very popular with my fellow residents.

My mum’s husband Stuart travels to Japan often (in fact, he’s there right now!) and brings back cute and quirky things from his trips. I spotted this paper fan when I was over at my mum’s for the weekend and couldn’t resist snapping a pic… can anyone else still sing along to the Pokémon theme tune? “I wanna be the very best…”

I wrote about my stay at Bedford Lodge in Newmarket, but Pimm’s and breakfast in bed are always worth another look. Delish.

Pizza Express takeout and wine on a Friday night in the studio. The plan was to work but we ended up slouching on beanbags, watching Big Bang Theory on the big telly and talking about life. <3 my studio!

Rob and I spent the Bank Holiday Weekend celebrating a rather important anniversary. We don’t usually pay much attention to anniversaries and almost missed this one too… Rob remembered around midday and texted me to confirm! But 10 years together gave us a great excuse to drink Hendricks gin and tonic, eat all the food and generally be merry.

And some final snaps – Fanny, the vintage VW campervan that will be our wedding transport, Vivienne Westwood heels on my shoe shelf, Travis snoozing on my side of the bed and some pretty awesome reverse parking by me.

It’s been a lovely few weeks!

Left My Heart In… Bedford Lodge, Newmarket

Posted in Travel.

Last weekend Rob and I packed up the car, waved goodbye to the cat and made our way down the M1 to Newmarket in Suffolk. We’d been invited to stay at Bedford Lodge Hotel by Tesco Magazine, and after a hectic week of working we were both looking forward to some time away.

Bedford Lodge is just outside Newmarket town centre, tucked away from the road. As soon as we pulled up I was smitten – there are huge floral baskets everywhere, so the whole hotel just sings with colour.

After a quick tour of our lovely double room and some squealing over the Molton Brown bath products (me, not Rob), we made the most of the 32 degree sunshine and sat on the terrace for lunch. Toasted sandwiches, chips and Pimm’s – perfect.

Feeling bolstered by lunch, we walked into Newmarket – probably a bad idea in such humid weather – and arrived in the small town feeling decidedly sticky. But it was worth it, if only for all that bunting…

A swim and a soak in the Jacuzzi later and we were dressed and ready for dinner. G&Ts were followed by the most delicious three courses I’ve eaten in a while, and a fillet steak to rival the Holy Grail of fillet steaks (Butter in NYC). The meal was beautiful, the service was speedy and the night was warm, and by 11pm we were feeling very content (and sleepy… that’s what good food will do to you).

We decided against the cooked breakfast on Sunday morning and any thoughts of bacon sandwiches were forgotten when this continental delight arrived at our door. Warm croissants, crispy toast and fresh fruit quickly disappeared.

Sadly a car breakdown meant we couldn’t explore Cambridge as we’d planned, but even waiting for an AA mechanic wasn’t so bad on that gloriously sunny terrace. I could’ve happily stayed at Bedford Lodge another day, week… maybe even a month. There was an air of calm, plenty of gin and not a MacBook in sight – what more does a girl need?

The Eternal Debate

Posted in Daily Outfits.

It’s something I’ve been asking myself for many years. An existential question, with an answer that could change the face of my wardrobe forever…

Spots or stripes?

Skirt, Topshop | Sweater, French Connection | Belt, Target | Brogues, c/o Zalando | Necklace, ASOS | Satchel, Zatchels

Luckily, they look good together so I don’t have to choose just yet. Phew! This lightweight striped jumper from the French Connection sale has fast become a ‘summer’ staple of mine, and the Topshop polka dot skirt is fun and flippy, despite being slightly too short and a real hazard in windy weather. Finished off with a pair of brown brogues, it’s another outfit I attribute to my current Zooey Deschanel obsession.

What do you think – spots or stripes?

PS – Just realised you can’t actually tell that my skirt has a polka dot print. It does, I promise.

Another Charity Shop Dress

Posted in Daily Outfits.

Planning a wedding is HARD. Guest lists are hard, choosing bridesmaids’ dresses that don’t look like bridesmaids’ dresses is hard, creating a budget you can actually stick to when you’re entertaining 150 people is hard. I’ve found myself seeking refuge from spreadsheets (my hatred for Excel is widely documented on Twitter) in my local charity shops, which helps with two things – a quick rummage through the rails gives me something other than chair covers to think about, and if I do find something lovely, I can actually buy it because it’s cheap. I’m on a bit of a shopping ban from now until September 2013 (argh) so these small purchases have really helped.

The latest is this monochrome dress – originally from Zara but picked up for £3.99 at St. Gemma’s Hospice.

The dress is a bit of a drop-waisted, shapeless affair which I’d never usually go for but I loved the cute collar and geometric print so bought it to try… and surprisingly, I really like it!

I’m carrying my new bag which was kindly sent to me by the team at knomo. I bought my first knomo after a recommendation from Bangs who replied to my plea for a beautiful yet functional bag for my MacBook, and have loved the brand ever since. I’ll be writing a full post on this baby soon but safe to say it’s the new love of my life.
