The Hat

TK Maxx hat, H&M top and jeans, Steve Madden leather jacket, Primark ring and brogues

I deliberated over this hat for a long time. Well, for the hour I spent in TK Maxx. Which is a long time in the life of an impulse buyer. It’s one of those pieces you absolutely love and wear in a myriad of ways in your fantasy life (you know, the one where you float around in designer clothing, where your job involves blogging from chic pavement cafés and your hobbies are reading literary classics and photography) but at 8.25 on a Monday morning, you wonder what the hell it’s doing taking up precious space in your already-crammed wardrobe because clearly, it has NO PLACE WHATSOEVER in real life. One of those pieces.

I decided to get over my fear of ridiculously oversized hats, ignored the Mr as he quoted that episode of Friends where Rachel wears a similarly huge hat (“Wait a minute – I know that hat! I was taken aboard that hat! They did experiments on me! I can’t have children!” *sigh*) and had a go at styling an outfit around my floppy-brimmed friend.

As the hat makes quite a statement enough for anyone, I paired it with a simple skinny jeans, striped top and leather jacket combo. I pulled the camel colour in with the tan brogues and added an art deco style cocktail ring for a vintage feel. I think it kinda worked… no one laughed and pointed as I walked down the street, at least (although the brim is quite wide so it’s possible I missed the mockery).

What do you think? Am I on to a winner or are you slowly backing away from the girl wearing a camel-coloured spaceship? Do tell.

Sunday Smile #23

Posted in Home.

After all my chatter about the wedding I went to on Friday, I forgot my camera. I was (and still am) absolutely gutted I couldn’t capture the day – even though lots of photos were taken, I love searching for those hidden moments others may have missed. I was also looking forward to sharing the day with you guys. Sob! Hopefully some decent photos will surface on Facebook… if they do, you’ll be the first to know!

The absence of my camera on Friday made me realise how much I adore taking photos. I have no real knowledge of photography, use a Sony Cyber-shot that is kindly on loan from my mum and I edit my photos using the ‘I’m Feeling Lucky’ setting in Picasa (oh, the shame!), but I’d really like to learn more about the art. Here are some philistine snaps of the signs of autumn – they won’t win any prizes, but I think I did a pretty decent job…

Have you spotted any signs of autumn yet? Any photography tips for me? And what’s making you smile today?

A Very Vintage Affair

Topshop faux fur stole, Zara dress and belt, Primark cardigan, tights brogues and ring

Okay, I admit it – the title of this post is a total and utter lie. Nothing I’m wearing is vintage. It’s all high street. There’s not a single second hand piece here!

After a week of frustrated, fruitless hunting for a vintage (and cheaper) alternative, I gave in to Topshop temptation and splashed out on this £25 faux fur stole. As I handed over my card I felt quite sick. I know I could pick one of these up for £2 at a car boot. I’ve seen them countless times but have never been tempted, and now time is against me. With no luck on eBay and a full time job that renders mid-week charity shop jaunts quite impossible, I was backed into a Topshop-shaped corner and out popped my faithful friend, Visa.

This is where all my good intentions to buy thrift fall down. I need the faux fur stole for a wedding tomorrow (more on that later) and I just don’t have the time to find a cheaper, more authentic alternative. The high street gives me a quick, easy solution to my shopping woes, and that’s why my wardrobe is full of it. A shame, but the slight smattering of vintage will have to suffice for now.

Do you rely on the high street for a fast shopping fix? Would you prefer to keep it vintage if only you had time to rummage?

The Blog Issue – Negativity

Posted in Blogging, Daily Outfits, Writing.

The Blog Issue is a series of posts on common issues that bloggers face every day. Today we’re looking at an area that can break even the most seasoned blogger – negativity. We start with an outfit shot, as always…

Although the Disney corp may beg to differ, we all know life is not a bed of roses. No matter how lovely you are (or how fabulous your outfit is), there will always be someone who disagrees. Sometimes they’ll be nice about it and offer constructive criticism, and other times they’ll just be damn rude. This, we accept. So how do we deal with it?

I’ve picked up on three different reactions to blog negativity:

1) Get upset, rant on Twitter, cry, delete comment, rant on Twitter again
2) Wrestle back control by introducing rules
3) Ignore and/or laugh about it

If you get a negative comment on your blog, nasty email, pissy Formspring question or cruel tweet, please don’t be a number 1-er. Getting upset about the (mostly unfounded) opinions of faceless internet strangers is not worth your time. You have more important things to do, like watching paint dry or scrubbing the kitchen floor. If you feel yourself getting emotional because someone said you look good for a 30 year old even though you’re only 24 (as happened to me this week), take a step back and remind yourself that all internet trolls are overweight 32 year old men wearing ill-fitting Star Trek t-shirts and stained brown cords. Okay?

When the delightful Jessica from What I Wore received a barrage of personal abuse on her blog, she took a stand and created a comment policy. This seems to work for her, but it’s not something I’d impose on Little Bird readers. I strongly believe that when it comes to the internet, comment is free and it’s near-impossible to control what people say. So that leaves you with…

Ignorance. Blissful for a reason. So what if someone thinks you know nothing about designer labels? Who cares if they call you a snob, a stuck up bitch or a grammar nazi (I am at least one of those, anyway)? Insults only become credible if you let them. If I was Oprah I’d tell you to believe in yourself, shrug off the negativity then look under your chair for a ticket to Australia. And if you can have a giggle about it too (I’m a particular fan of pseudo-niceness, also known as the backhanded compliment, in anon comments. You look great for a plus size girl, you look amazing for your age, good luck with your continued weight loss…), then even better.

Most personal nastiness, whether online or off, stems from jealousy. It’s an issue we’ve covered in The Blog Issue and one that will only thrive if we give it so much undeserved attention. So put on your best ‘I don’t give a shit’ face, move your mouse over that little red cross and continue being your fabulous self. Can I get a ‘hell yes’?

Have you ever experienced negativity on your blog? How do you deal with it? Do you let it get you down or just walk (or click) on by?
