A Few of My Favourite Things

No, not raindrops on roses or whiskers on kittens. Although I do love whiskers on kittens.

Here are a few of my favourite things, collected over the last month or so. A less rage-inducing ‘haul’ post, if you will.

Chanel Le Vernis Nail Colour in Rouge Noir

I love the colour of this polish – a deep, rich burgundy with a high gloss finish. Plus, the little Chanel pot makes me feel so fancy. Sadly, it chips like a bitch and no top coat can redeem it. Sob.

Knomo leather iPad case (c/o) | Primark beaded necklace

This beautiful pink leather iPad case was sent to me by knomo – it’s such a delicious shade of raspberry and far too pretty to be used solely for technology. I’ve taken it out as a clutch a few times and it’s the perfect size for all my evening essentials.

The beaded collar necklace was a fantastic £6 Primark find and I wear it almost daily. It adds just the right amount of ostentatious bling to any outfit.

Joules Animal Print Jumper (c/o) | Zara knitted beanie

This adorable reindeer jumper deserves a whole post of its own (non-tacky Christmas jumper, anyone?) but I’ve been wearing it constantly in an attempt to inject some festive cheer into my life, so it deserves a mention here.

The Zara knitted beanie was an impulse purchase but has kept my hair neat and tidy in the face of Yorkshire’s delightful winter weather… a winner.

Bobbi Brown Rich Lip Colour in Crimson | Khiel’s lip balm (c/o)

Dark, berry shades are my favourites at the moment and this creamy Bobbi Brown lipstick is top of my list. It’s slightly gothic but makes a real impact when worn with flicky liquid liner.

The Khiel’s lip balm is a little wonder – it’s been keeping my lips soft and smooth despite gale force winds and drying central heating.

Vintage Kodak camera, car boot sale

Last but not least is this sweet 60s Kodak I picked up at a car boot the other week. It came in a cute leather case and now sits on display in my living room. I’m developing a bit of a ‘thing’ for old cameras – they’re much more visually appealing than modern ones!

Have you picked up anything pretty this month?

Have Yourself a Quick and Thrifty Christmas

Posted in Home.

home interiors blog

Christmas has passed me by a bit this year. I’ve been so overwhelmingly busy, I haven’t had time to really enjoy all the lovely festive things that usually kickstart my Christmas spirit. Somehow, chugging eggnog while speed-wrapping presents and skipping to the choruses of my favourite festive songs just isn’t the same.

But, as a freelancer I’m happy to be busy, and despite my heavy workload I have found a way to squeeze some festive fun into my limited time… and I did it all on a thrifty budget, too. Smug. So if you, like me, find yourself wearing three Christmas jumpers at once and scheduling the opening of your advent calendar a week in advance, here are a few ways to save your time and your spirit. You might even save some pennies, too.

the tree.

In May this year, our brown and rotting Christmas tree was still sitting in the garden. This, combined with the broken table that’s been in the boot of my car for three months, tells me Rob and I are not really great at disposing of large items. The tip is not a place I want to visit on a Saturday afternoon.

So, for Christmas 2012, we ordered our tree from The Christmas Aspect, (as recommended by Lil) along with some logs for our wood burner. They delivered everything early one Saturday, letting us know they were on their way then just leaving our tree and logs the door for us to bring in when we were ready. The best bit about it, though, is the collection – when the festivities are over, some lovely person will collect the ghost of Christmas past and our neighbours will no longer call us ‘the couple at number 16 with the dead Christmas tree in their garden’. Aces.

With the tree upright and Travis locked out of the room, I set about decorating it. I mention my Christmas decorations every year because I often get emails asking where they’re from – I bought them on eBay a few years ago. They’re hand-painted wooden baubles (and a couple of birds!) and were £10 for about 20. I also have a few wicker hearts dotted about that cost a couple of quid for a big box from Ikea.

I’m not a fan of glittery, glitzy Christmas decor and prefer a warm, traditional feel. Tinsel is banned in our house but a big tree can look bare without it, so I use ribbon as a stylish alternative. I bought three 3 metre rolls in various colours from Pound World for… £1.

crafts and candles.

I’m vehemently anti-Christmas crafts, even more so this year as I’m super busy. But in the spirit of Christmas and an attempt to create something more unique than your average John Lewis centrepiece, I went freestyle.

I found the painted eggs at a charity shop a few months ago and had put them aside in the hope of finding a use for them ‘when I had time’. While in TK Maxx I spotted the large jar and an idea formed, so I nipped to HobbyCraft for the wooden stars and cinnamon sticks, chucked it all together (or rather, spent 20 minutes carefully arranging it) and lit a candle for good measure. Done.

And on that note, candles have been my festive spirit saviours this year – I bulk buy from TK Maxx and light a few together to mix the scents and create a lovely Christmassy glow. Minimum time and effort required.

festive blooms.

Another quick and easy way to add festive cheer to any room is with a bunch of Christmas blooms. Ok, so tulips are hardly festive, but teamed with winter ferns they’re passable. These were 2 for £6 at Waitrose.

the finishing touch.

In our house, decorations are confined to one room. Doing up the whole house is more than my work-addled brain can handle, so everywhere else remains pretty neutral throughout the festive period.

I couldn’t resist this cute Christmas soap, though – a really simple way to bring a bit of cheer to the bathroom, and at £3.99 (again, TK Maxx) it didn’t break the bank. Display only, of course.

Have you finished your Christmas decorating? Any tips to share for those with little time or a limited budget?

Hair Extensions – The Myths Debunked

Posted in Beauty.

where to buy hair extensions

I’ve moaned many times on this here blog about my rubbish hair. It’s fine, limp and refuses to grow. It lacks body and bounce. Generally, it’s a bit shit. I blame my mum. But despite trying every thickening, lengthening treatment on the market and spending hundreds of pounds on hair cuts and colours, I’ve never gone down the hair extensions route… until now.

You see, hair extensions have all kinds of horrible connotations. They’re ratty, tatty and the clips show. They’re a completely different colour to your real hair. They’re unethical. They’re sold on market stalls. All these things are true in some cases, but there are a few amazing brands working hard to change perceptions of hair extensions, and Bobby Glam is one of them.

Triple weft hair extensions, c/o Bobby Glam

After playing around with some cheap extensions (as seen here), I wanted to try them properly so contacted Bobby Glam for a chat. After sending them a photo of my hair in natural light, their stylist colour matched me and I was sent a set of triple weft extensions in ‘Iced Coffee’.

how to clip in hair extensions

‘Triple weft’ refers to the thickness of each extension – most extensions come in single wefts, which means you need to add more pieces to build thickness. Bobby Glam extensions come in double, triple or quad wefts so you can achieve the same big, bouncy look but with fewer clips. This is ‘Remy’ hair which has been ethically sourced.

As soon as I opened the box, I knew these weren’t the extensions I’d been imagining. The branding and packaging is very sleek and modern, and everything looks stylish. There’s also a very handy ‘test’ weft that’s separate from the rest – you can use this to check the colour is a perfect match without opening the main package meaning you can return your extensions if they’re not quite right. Clever!

Clipping in the extensions is ridiculously easy. There are six wefts in total – some wide pieces for the back of your head and some narrower for each side. There are plenty of online tutorials to show you how to clip in extensions, but I just whacked them in and they blended seamlessly into my own hair. It took me 5 minutes, and here’s the result…

BOOM! Now, I’m not usually one for singing my own praises, but… come on! I am SO pleased with my mermaid hair. After 5 years with short hair, it’s amazing to have such length… but after 27 years with fine, flat hair, it’s the bounce that I’m most excited about.

The difference is too extreme for me to wear these every day, but for special occasions they’re just perfect. They don’t feel heavy or uncomfortable and they look completely natural – in fact, I did a reaction test when answering the door to the postman, and he didn’t bat an eyelid. Success! If you want a va-va-voom look for the party season, I’d recommend them in a shot. You might spend all night stroking your own head, but it’s a small price to pay for hair that would make L’Oreal envious.

Have you ever worn hair extensions? What do you think of them?

‘Recycling’ – Fashion’s New Buzz Word

Posted in Daily Outfits, Fashion.

Fashion is full of buzzwords. ‘Oxblood’ (aka burgundy), ‘peplum’ (skirting at the waist), ‘colour blocking’ (wearing one colour), etc etc. Pithy terms like these catch like polyester at a bonfire in the fashion world, and we spend season after season referring to squiggly printed leggings as ‘tribal’. Sigh.

One buzzword that really riles me, however, is ‘recycling’. I can deal with the use of an exotic word to describe the colour of my high school uniform, but ‘recycle’ has a very real meaning. Here it is:

  • Re·cy·cle (verb) – convert (waste) into reusable material.
Recently, the word ‘recycle’ has been used to describe Kate Middleton’s outfits. See, the Duchess of Cambridge likes to wear her clothes more than once – a concept seemingly foreign to many women’s magazines. Kate doesn’t just wear things again – she recycles them.

Here I am in the Warehouse leather skirt I wore last week. I’ve actually worn it multiple times since I bought it, because I love it so. But am I recycling it? No. I’m just wearing it. Using it for the purpose it was bought for. Isn’t this something everyone, everywhere has been doing since the first neanderthal skinned a sabre tooth and fashioned its fur into a fetching two-piece?

A Very Special Dress for a Very Special Party

Posted in Daily Outfits, Fashion.

In my last post, I wrote about my Moroccan Christmas under canvas. A very special evening that required an equally special dress… one that deserves a whole post of its own!

Dress, Badgley Mischka rented c/o WishWantWear | Heels, Guess c/o Sarenza | Beaded clutch, M&S | Jewelled cuff, Zara

I’m quite new to the concept of renting clothing… it seems a bit weird to spend £50+ on an item you’ll only get to wear once. But for a special occasion, it’s different. I bet I’m not the only one with a wardrobe full of once-worn party dresses. When Christmas, a birthday or a celebration looms, I hit the high street like a woman possessed, looking for the ever-illusive ‘miracle dress’ – one that makes me look thin and beautiful and Hollywood-esque. Shopping trips like this almost always end in frustration, despair and FAR too much money spent in Whistles.

This is where renting something starts to look appealing. After oooh-ing and aaah-ing my way through pages of black tie dresses on WishWantWear, they very kindly offered to waive the rental fee for a dress I could wear to the Papa Kata Christmas party last Friday. The concept is simple – choose your dress, your size (and a back-up in case it doesn’t fit) and your date and WishWantWear will send your goodies out in the post, along with a prepaid returns envelope. You get to keep your outfit for 4 or 8 days, paying a charge based on the value of the dress and the length of time you need it for. When you’re done, just bundle it into the envelope (no washing or dry cleaning required) and send it back.

I chose this seriously sexy Badgley Mischka Foxxy bodycon dress – not my usual style but I loved the art deco beading and longer sleeves. It was an utter dream to wear – the fabric felt so luxurious and comfortable (something that cannot be said about the Spanx I had on underneath). Teamed with simple heels, a coordinating bag and a blingtastic cuff, I felt fabulous.

Once you’ve got your head around the concept, renting a dress for a special occasion makes perfect sense. The initial cost is probably what you’d spend buying a dress from the high street, but the piece you receive is much better quality and design – great for knocking the socks off the accounts team at your work Christmas do. And I love the accessories too – this Mawi necklace would look amazing with a simple LBD, and if you REALLY want to go for it, how about a vintage Chanel 2.55 Classic? Drool.

I’ll leave you with one of the MANY photo booth shots from the night… this is the first attempt and therefore most composed. They got steadily more raucous as the night went on!

What do you think of dress rental? Would you hire something special for a fancy-pants occasion?

Heads up – I was sent this dress to wear (and return!) for free by WishWantWear but was not paid to write this piece.
