How To Wear Floral Trousers

Posted in Daily Outfits, Fashion.

Over the last year, I’ve developed a real thing for bold trousers. First came my polka dot jeans, then a rainbow of coloured ones in every shade from pale pink to jade green, and now, I’m attempting florals.

Yes, floral print. On my size 12 thighs. Interesting.

Zara floral trousers, Topshop denim shirt, Next cream trench, Zara heels, H&M ring via charity shop, Forever 21 necklace

Hey, look at that! They’re actually kinda flattering! Who knew?

I first wore these trousers for a night out in Leeds, and then repeated the outfit for the Company Magazine Style Blogger Awards – see the look here. Paired with a white tee, blazer and nude heels, they make for the perfect casual-night-out-with-friends look – not too dressy but still pretty stylish. For daytime, I paired them with a denim shirt and cream trench for a similarly laidback look.

I must say, I am in LOVE with these trews. Proper, full-on love. Surprisingly, they’re really versatile when paired with simple basics – I’ve worn them with an oversized jumper and flats, a grey marl tee and leather jacket, a white shirt and wedge heels… they’ve become my go-to trousers when I need a bit of a boost. One wrong move, however, and they become instantly hideous, so here are my tips for making floral trousers work…

  • If you’re blessed with child-bearing hips (like me), wear a longline jacket in a block colour – the longer length will cover hips and stop at a slimmer part of your leg, drawing the eye down
  • Don’t mix florals – despite it being ‘in’ right now, I found mixing two floral prints looked too ‘I’m-mental-me’ and a bit try-hard.
  • On top, go for basics in neutral colours, like grey, white and nude. Or if you’re feeling brave, try a classic navy stripe
  • Add height! A pair of heels will instantly lengthen and slim your legs
  • Size up – I went for a size bigger than my usual in these Zara trousers for a looser, more flattering fit
Those are my tips for wearing floral trousers – what about you? Any tips to share? Would you wear them at all?

DIY For Divas – Lace Collar

Posted in Fashion.

When it comes to DIY, I’m a bit of a diva – I’d rather pay someone to do the hard work than pick up the pinking shears myself. My personal combination of impatience and perfectionism means I reach for my debit card more often than my needle and thread. Why bother doing it yourself if you can get it down Topshop for a small (okay, moderate) fee?

I wasn’t always so A List about crafting – in 2005, I set up a jewellery business called pinkplectrum. Throughout my time at university (I did a media degree… go figure), I made vintage-style jewels and sold them through MySpace. It was a pretty booming business and for a while, I shared the market with the ladies behind ElsieBelle and Eclectic Eccentricity. But then life got in the way, I swapped my sewing machine for a MacBook and packed away my craft box. It was only when I spotted Oxfam’s DIY guides that I decided to go back to my roots and give the Visa a rest…

guide to making a lace collar DIY lace collar how to

These cute cards are available to pick up in Oxfam stores and feature a range of craft projects, each with an official button rating for difficulty (love that!). The lace collar has a difficulty of one button, so I thought that’d be a good place to start. First, the ingredients…

The men’s shirt was £2.99 from a charity shop – the idea with these cards is you can buy all you need within the charity shop you picked it up in. The lace was snipped from a vintage nightie, also picked up in said charity shop. I dug the needle and thread out of my neglected craft box and found the pearls there too – a little extra embellishment is always good in my book.

First, I chopped the collar off the shirt and neatened the edges with sharp scissors. Very easy.

Next I had to actually do something properly crafty – sewing. The hardest part of this bit was threading the damn needle – seriously, why is the eye of a needle so impossibly small? Is that really necessary?

With needle (eventually) threaded, I sewed the lace along the collar. I wanted it to ‘hang’ over the bottom of the collar so positioned it close to the edge and used the stripes to keep a straight line. Handy! Because I used lace trim from a nightie rather than a proper length of lace, I had two small pieces rather than one long length I could cut to size. I sewed the pieces to each side of the collar and joined them at the back where no one would see. Sneaky!

No need for neat stitches if your thread is the same colour as the lace!

DIY embellished collar

With the lace in place and my guide card offering no more instruction, I went it alone and decided to sew a cluster of pearls on the tip of my collar. Woah, steady on Jen! Clearly I was channelling Jazz Domino Holly.  It was ridiculously easy to add the pearls though – just one stitch through the pearl and a knot at the back and they were in place.

And that’s it! It took around half an hour to make this collar – quicker (and cheaper) than a trip to Topshop. Okay, so I cut my finger a couple of times, spent an inordinate amount of time trying to thread a needle and covered my bedroom in bits of lace, but hey – isn’t it purdy? I’m so proud.

My crafting comeback wasn’t quite as dramatic as a(nother) Madonna reinvention, and I actually really enjoyed creating something with my own two hands rather than letting Topshop do all the work. I’m not quite ready to swear off mass-produced commodities and make my own dresses from hemp, but I’ll definitely give crafting another go and might even make DIY for Divas a regular feature.

What do you think – are you the crafty type or is it fast fashion all the way? Impressed with my collar or think you can do better? Let me know!

Pancake day // Queuing

Pancake Day seems ages ago now… probably because it was! It’s one of my favourite days of the year – when else do we celebrate the pure magic of eggs, flour and milk, fried then drizzled in maple syrup and rolled into a thin strip to be eaten with a knife and fork? The one pictured was made for me by Rob’s dad – delicious.

Queuing is a very British thing – something we do quietly and politely with little fuss. When I spotted this line in the centre of Leeds, I joined it and ended up with a £10 Wagamama voucher when I reached the front. Patience pays, people!

Taking the tube with Gem Fatale // The Company Magazine Style Blogger Awards

It’s fair to say I’ve spent some quality time with Gem Fatale over the last month – we’ve shared beds, meat platters and even a pair of tights. This MySpace-esque shot was snapped as we made our way to a party during Fashion Week. Love her.

Earlier this week I went along to the Company Magazine Style Blogger Awards. I didn’t win anything (nor did I expect to), but it was so nice to see lots of lovely bloggers and celebrate the hard work that goes in to creating a successful blog. Well done to winners Lily and Carrie!

‘Helping’ // Having a ‘crafternoon’

It’s a little known fact that I used to run a relatively successful jewellery line (pinkplectrum, if anyone remembers it!). In 2006/7, I was very into crafts and DIY… I guess the final year of my media degree wasn’t particularly challenging. But then real life got in the way and I haven’t attempted anything since.

I made this collar for a post on the Oxfam Fashion Blog (tutorial coming here soon!) and really enjoyed it… plus, I am beyond pleased with the result. Look what I made, ma!

Bubbles // Bunting and balloons

Leeds often gets short shrift when it comes to fashion events, but I can always rely on Harvey Nichols to restore my faith in Yorkshire’s style credentials. On Tuesday I went along to their SS12 fashion show with my local ladies and had such a good time – Victoria Quarter was strewn with bunting and balloons to fit with the circus theme, and champagne flowed freely.

As the models took to the catwalk, I loved the high summer dresses and colour pop accessories. Also, it should be made law for every fashion show to play LMFAO’s Sexy And I Know It. Some serious chair dancing took place.

View from the 32nd floor of the Centre Point building // Vintage lizard skin belt

On Thursday I visited the 32nd floor of the Centre Point Building (Paramount side) in London for an evening with TK Maxx. My love for TK Maxx is well-documented here, so it was amazing to chat to the people behind the brand and hear all about their new initiatives.

Back in Leeds, I popped along to a local jumble sale and came out with just one purchase – this vintage lizard skin belt for just 50p. I love the detailing on the gold hardware and know I’ll be wearing it all summer.

Sunshine Bakery cupcakes // Roundhay Park

After a hectic week (month) in London, I’ve spent the weekend getting reacquainted with my home city. On Saturday I did my food shopping in independent stores, picking up meat from the butcher and bread from Sunshine Bakery. I couldn’t resist these cupcakes – raspberry and chocolate on the left and Eton Mess on the right!

Today’s glorious weather called for a trip to Roundhay Park (along with the rest of Leeds) for a wander, followed by a pub lunch in the Roundhay Fox. Perfect!

What have you been up to recently?

Little Bird in InStyle Magazine

Posted in Fashion, Second Hand Shopping.

Back in January, I was invited to take part in a photo shoot for InStyle Magazine. At first I wondered if they’d mixed me up with some supermodel of the same name, but when I heard the words ‘charity shopping’ I knew they were on to something. My love for second hand shopping is well-documented, so I was delighted to be asked to share my tips with InStyle’s readers.

The shoot was done in collaboration with Oxfam (I write regularly for their fashion blog) and the lovely Oxfam ladies brought along some donated goodies for me to wear. The striped dress features in their current press campaign which you might’ve spotted in Company Magazine and Grazia – it’s hard to believe someone would give it away! The rest of the pieces are my own charity shop finds, including the slightly-too-small Gina shoes and a gorgeous Gap trench coat I picked up a few days beforehand. Yes, as soon as I found out I’d be wearing head-to-toe second hand in an issue of InStyle, I hit the charity shops… hard!

The day of the shoot was freezing cold but as the feature was for the April issue, we had to pretend it was gloriously spring-like. So please excuse my ‘I’m-so-so-cold’ face and ‘my-hands-are-numb’ fist. I can only presume the rest of my photos were god-awful for them to choose that one…

Yikes! Apart from that full-length shot, I’m pretty pleased with how the feature turned out. Apart from me and my charity shopping, there are girls representing crafting, market shopping and eBaying in the feature – there are some great tips for budget shopping.

What do you think – should I be charging £10,000 for my next shoot? 😉

Socks (Or Tights) With Sandals

Posted in Daily Outfits, Fashion.

I’ve never really understood the problem with socks and sandals. Okay, brilliant white sports socks with brown leather granddad sandals, maybe. But peeptoes and cute printed socks, or harmless 60 deniers in classic black? What’s the fuss?

Dress c/o Matalan, Michael Kors jacket via TK Maxx, suede heels c/o Bertie, Emma Fox bag via TK Maxx, Miss Selfridge ring, Topshop hat

See, I think these rusty orange T-Bars, sent to me by the ladies at Bertie, look super sweet against black opaques. We all know it’s not warm enough for bare toes, so wearing open toed shoes with socks or tights is a great way to make them seasonally-appropriate. Plus I haven’t painted my toenails in weeks, so y’know…

What do you think – are you cool with socks (or tights) and sandals or would you rather go naked (feet-wise)?
