Boutique Run – The Results

Posted in Home.

It’s been almost a year since I begrudgingly took up running. When I first started I couldn’t image ever even enjoying running, never mind travelling down to London to take part in an official race with thousands of other women.

But enjoy it I do, even though I still find it exhausting. And on Saturday I made that trip to London to take my place on the Boutique Run starting line. I ran my 5k in 39 minutes – slow but steady is my technique. I didn’t stop because ‘the sun was in my eyes’ or ‘my leg felt broken’ (two of my regular excuses for stopping and walking), but just kept going until I hit that finish line (then collapsed in a deck chair – handy).

The race itself was fantastic – there’s something really motivating about running alongside so many other women – but it was the after party that impressed me most. There were hot showers, hairdryers, products, dressing tables and full length mirrors for the post-race beautification, food and champagne for sustenance and live music for entertainment. There were hair and makeup experts on hand too, although I missed out on a makeover because I was too busy at the canapés table… ahem.

Bangs and a Bun once told me it’s notoriously difficult to get women to participate in sports – it’s very much a man’s game. She’s blazing her own trail with her amazing Bangs on the Run team, and Boutique Run is doing great things too. The event gives women the motivation they need to get out there and, like Race For Life, there’s a real sense of sisterhood and support. I’ll definitely be back next year and from now on, I require a glass of champagne and a blini after every run. Darling.

Fashion Blogger Challenge – The £50 Outfit

Posted in Daily Outfits, Fashion, Second Hand Shopping.

I’m quite a competitive person – I’ve been known to sulk after losing a game of Pictionary and once blamed coming 5th in a sports day sack race on ‘the sun in my eyes’. Ahem. So, the raging competitor in me was delighted when SoFeminine.co.uk extended an invite to take part in their fashion blogger challenge. The terms? Swap £50 for a fabulous outfit, bought from the sartorial outlet of your choice.

Armed with my Shopping Survival Kit (£50 cash, a cotton tote, flat shoes and Tic Tacs for sustenance) I hit the high street. But rather than taking the easy route and popping in to one of my (many, admittedly) high street haunts, where a £50 outfit can be accomplished in a matter of minutes, I kept walking. Past Primark, H&M, Zara and Topshop I skipped, nipping down a side alley to reach my final destination – a vintage shop called Mighty Baby.

I chose a vintage shop because they’re notoriously expensive, especially in big cities, and I wanted a real challenge. When the average price of a vintage blouse is around £30, it would take some real rummaging to find a true bargain… wouldn’t it?

Well actually, no. Mighty Baby is one of the cheapest vintage shops I’ve ever been in – almost everything is £10. The rails are packed (and ordered by colour, which was really helpful) with beautiful vintage clothing in pristine condition, and I had my outfit sorted in 20 minutes. Obviously I then spent an hour rifling through the rails for more vintage bargains…

At £25, the dress I chose was one of the most expensive items in the shop. But it’s so beautiful – all carefully draped fabric and pretty pleating. And it fits perfectly, a rarity for vintage clothing which often comes up small. I teamed it with a mini leather satchel, also from Mighty Baby and only £10, and then went on the hunt for a belt.

After half an hour of fruitless searching, I caved and snuck in to my old faithful, Primark. Five minutes and £5 later I emerged with this tasselled affair and after a quick trip to Topshop for more of my favourite lipstick (£8 and an idea I nicked from Ellie, who looks beautiful in her challenge outfit) I had spent up.

I can’t wait to see how my fellow fashion bloggers work this challenge. All entries will be displayed on SoFeminine.co.uk – I’ll let you know when we’re up there so you can choose your favourite.

What do you think – did I spend my £50 wisely? How would you tackle this challenge?

Key Colours for Summer – Cobalt Blue and Sunshine Yellow

We all know black is eternally chic, navy will take you from season to season and all style problems are fixed with the application of a crisp white shirt, but there’s just something about colour. A lipstick red pencil skirt will put a wiggle in your step. Pink patent flats will make you click your heels. And a neon orange manicure will distract you from work all day long (typing has never looked so good!).

When the sun’s shining, I automatically reach for the brightest pieces in my wardrobe. If people don’t shield their eyes as I walk past, my outfit’s just not doing it’s job. Cobalt blue and sunshine yellow is my favourite summer colour combination – it never fails to make me smile.

What are your favourite colour combinations?

When it comes to photography, I’m constantly inspired by Paula from Pink Bow. Her photos are always stunningly beautiful. Unfortunately I don’t have her wicked camera skillz but I do have an iPhone and Instagram, which means I can pretend.

Here are a few shots from the last few weeks of my life. I use a variety of filters, love Tilt Shift and if you’d like to follow me, my username is jenholmes85.

The Second Hand Home Challenge – New Old Things

Posted in Home, Second Hand Shopping.

When it comes to second hand shopping, I definitely have my favourite places. I never leave empty-handed after a visit to the charity shop where the volunteers know me by name and there’s always a bargain to be found at the big car boot (which is why I went every week last summer). But part of the fun of thrifting is discovering new places, so when a friend recommended a different car boot sale I had programmed my sat nav and set my alarm for 7am before she could say ’50p in’.

The first bargain of the day was this leather suitcase. I’m building up quite a collection now, much to Rob’s dismay/amusement. This was £2, and I picked up a blue plastic number for £1 too.

It’s such a blogger cliché, but I did squeal just a little bit when I spotted this typewriter. And I think I downright choked when I was given the price – £2. When I got it home I discovered this amazing letter of complaint, dated October 1972. Amazing, but not quite my best find…

I’m not 100% certain of the authenticity of this Hermès purse. It’s made from a beautiful, rich leather and the craftsmanship is stunning. It came in a dustbag too, which is always a good sign. My only niggle is the zip, which looks slightly cheap compared to the rest of the purse. At £4 it was worth the risk though, and the quality of the leather alone earns it a place in my handbag.

I also picked up a ridiculous number of mismatched photo frames for the photo wall I’m creating in our living room, two heart-shaped plates to match the one I bought at a boot sale a few years ago and some old advertising posters that I’ll frame and hang. I think it’s the best second hand shopping trip I’ve ever been on.

Did you find any bargains this weekend?
