Chunky Rings

If asked what three things I would take to a desert island, right now I’d say these rings. The diamond is a given, and the two tropical stone rings from H&M haven’t been off my fingers since I bought them (£3.99 for the big blue and £3.99 for the orange, who came with a purple friend).

They’re definitely the easiest way to give yourself a ‘POW! I’M FASHION!’ boost. Happy Friday!

The Essential Summer Top

Posted in Daily Outfits, Fashion.

We’ve already discussed the Essential Summer Skirt, and now it’s time to add another item to your summer wardrobe wishlist. Just like the skirt, the Essential Summer Top is simple, easy to throw on and (best of all for those of us with perpetual overdrafts) cheap.

Primark Woven Pocket Tee, £8 (image via PR Shots)

This soft, loose tee comes in a variety of shades – I’ve spotted mint green, peach, red, blue and ivory as well as the tawny colour above. I love the cute folded over sleeves and the rounded hem.

I chose the peach version and sized up (this is a 14) for extra drape-age. I threw it on with my favourite jeans and a cardigan, and with a little artful tucking-in and some heavy duty jewels, it looks far more expensive than £8. Another piece that I’ll wear time and time again.

How would you wear the Essential Summer Top?

PS – I’ve started a tumblelog. It’s pretty unrelated to Little Bird and is more or less just an outlet for all the stuff currently taking up space in my brain. If you’d like to take a look, it’s called Oh I Love That. (click)

How to Wear Coloured Jeans Without Looking Like a Five Year Old

Posted in Daily Outfits.

I hear you. “It cannot be done!”, you cry. And yes, it is rather tricky. Block colour (especially primary colour) clothing has an air of the playground about it. It’s all a bit hopscotch, pigtails and sand pits, isn’t it?

I’ve struggled with these coral-coloured Diesel jeans for a few weeks. Teamed with other bright colours in a vain attempt at colour blocking, they make me look like a 90s kids’ TV presenter. Stripes look too try-hard Parisian. Florals too twee. I feared my bargain designer jeans (£20 down from £100 in TK Maxx) would be relegated to the ‘what the Hell were you thinking’ drawer (current residents – hareem pants, dungarees, 6in heels) forever.

A simple, sheer blouse and loose-fitting cardigan paired with contrasting mint green pumps and a chunky ring tone down the bright colour and toddler-at-the-seaside effect, making my new jeans totally wearable without a hint of the CBeebies. Phew.

How would you wear these jeans?

PS – The jeans are current season Diesel, not oft-found in TK Maxx. They were probably sent to the discount store because the leg length on these bad boys was somethin’ else – 38in! Most likely an error in the manufacture of one particular batch, but not a problem for a bargain hunter with a pair of scissors. I chopped them to regular length then rolled them up to just above the ankles. No sewing required and a saving of £80.

How Silk Scarves Will Save Your Life

Posted in Daily Outfits, Second Hand Shopping.

If you’re currently growing out a short hairstyle, that is.

If – like me – you’re stuck somewhere between crop and mullet (or maybe you’re right in the middle of mullet territory – I feel for you, my friend. Wait for me, I’ll be there in three weeks), your hair routine is probably less about styling and more about damage control. You have weapons, not products. My arsenal includes thick, gelatinous wax, my own ears and – on a particularly desperate day – a hair clip shaped like a daisy.

There are a few options available to the short-haired-but-wants-to-be-long-haired girl. Hats are useful, but not particularly office appropriate and you should really take them off at the dinner table. Extensions, if you’re really that impatient and want to resemble a horse at dressage. Or scarves. A printed silk scarf, tied jauntily around the head a la Audrey, will at once mask your ridiculous Nick Berry hairdo and give you an air of sophistication not unlike Ms Hepburn herself. Well… maybe not if you’re lugging a basket round Tesco/hauling ass for the bus/carrying a Primark bag. But still.

I stocked up on scarves at this morning’s car boot – I say, the more ridiculous the print, the better.

This is today’s choice. The British royal carriage print is very apt, don’t you think?

This beauty has a map of the Paris Metro on it. Pretty and practical.

The obligatory horse print. To be worn around the neck with a tweed jacket, jodhpurs and a tight smile.

The title is a direct quote from one of my colleagues. I think he got it spot on, don’t you?
