Dressing Down a Dressy Dress

H&M dress and striped tee, Primark brogues and belt, gold nameplate necklace, Me & Zena ring

I love clothes that work hard for their place in my wardrobe. A dress that can go from Ladies Day to the 9.30pm London to Leeds train (stopping at Newark, Doncaster and Wakefield, no less) without so much as a crease is a total winner.

A few people asked me how I’d wear my Ladies Day dress for just a regular (mixed sex) day, so here it is. A striped tee, leather belt and flats. Rocket science, it ain’t.

*I See You* Hexagon Eye Ring, £21, Me & Zena

Just a simple mix of patterns, accessorised with this beautiful ring and an attractive sunburn rash. All in a day’s work!

I wore this outfit to the Matalan AW11 preview last week – it was weird to be convulsing over chunky knits, knee high socks and snoods with the sun beating down and bare legs on show, but that’s fashion for you. The collection was stunning and the amazing studio space showed it off to perfection. Here are a few of my favourite pieces. You can see more photos on my Facebook page.

I love everything about this outfit… especially the fact it’s displayed on an iPad!

When I showed Rob this photo he said ‘isn’t this our house?’ Trinkets and teapots and cushions, oh my!

I must own this dress. My favourite of the night.

Boutique Run – For Women Who Don’t Enjoy Sport (that’s me)

Posted in Home.

GIVEAWAY CLOSED

I’ve already made my confession. back in February, I wrote about my passion for running, despite a complete hatred for all things ‘sporty’. I run because it makes me feel good and keeps me fit. But I don’t enjoy it. It’s hard and boring and tiring and it hurts. But I keep slogging away, because at least if I’m running I can still eat garlic bread. And Mini Egg yoghurts (yes, they exist). And pizza.

So when I was contacted about Boutique Run 2011 – official tag line ‘sport with style’, unofficial tag line ‘for women who don’t enjoy sport’ – my toes twitched. I’d been struggling to stay focused and motivated with my running (remember this?) and Boutique Run sounded like the perfect goal.

Photobucket

I know – I’d never heard of it either. Boutique Run is a women-only 5k or 10k run in Battersea Park on Saturday 9th July. Much like other organised runs, you collect your vest, warm up, run the distance and get a medal for your achievement. But that’s where similarities end, because Boutique Run is sports wrapped up in a big, girly bow.

The Boutique Village is open from 3pm on the day, so you have plenty of time to get ready, style up your leggings, work out if there’s a flattering way to wear a sweatband, put on lipstick before you realise that’s ridiculous and wipe it off, etc. At 5.30pm, you’ll leave your bags in the dressing room and take part in the warm up, and then it’s race time. When you complete your 5k or 10k run, it’s back to the Village for a hot shower and a quick change into your evening attire. Yep – evening attire. This is where it gets really interesting.

Photobucket

As a reward for your awesome sports-based achievement, you’ll be treated to an evening of pampering. There’ll be nail bars, blowdry stations and make-up artists ready to turn you from red-faced runner to stylish socialite. Then you’ll need to limber up for the final part of the day – champagne, music and dancing. Maybe dancing from your seat if you’re really knackered. But still.

Photobucket

I love the idea behind this event – motivation is the thing I struggle most with, so to have my hard work rewarded in such a fabulous way is a real kick. I’ll be making my way to Battersea Park, trainers in hand and nervous expression firmly in place, on 9th July to take part, and I’d love to take some Little Bird readers with me…

The giveaway

I have TWO free entry passes, worth £38.50, to give away to Little Bird readers. Entry includes an ASICS vest, Vita Coco drinks and the exclusive Boutique Sport ’bouti’ (see what they did there?) bag.

To be in with the chance of winning, just tell me why you’d like to take part in Boutique Run by leaving a comment on this post. Do you struggle with motivation and need a kick up the ass to get training (like me)? Just started running and need a goal distance? Want a free makeover? All perfectly acceptable reasons.

The rules

  • Boutique Run is girls only, so this giveaway is not open to those of you with the Y chromosome (that’s the dudes)
  • The run is taking place on Saturday 9th July at 6pm at Battersea Park, London, so you need to be free and able to get to the location on that day
  • You will need to make your own travel/accommodation arrangements if you live outside London
  • Make sure you leave a method of contact in your entry comment (link to your blog where I can find an email address, actual email address, Twitter handle)
  • You must be over 18 on the day of the run to take part
  • The giveaway closes at 10pm on Monday 25th April and winners will be announced shortly after
Got a question? You’ll probably find an answer here. Good luck!

Ladies Day at Aintree with Matalan

Posted in Daily Outfits, Fashion.

This time last week, Emma, Sara and I were standing at the gates of Aintree racecourse, excitedly waiting for Ladies Day to begin.

Photobucket
See? Totally excited!

We were there as guests of Matalan, who were hunting for Aintree’s most stylish lady for their Style Contest and showcasing their SS11 collections in an amazing catwalk show. I’m a long-time fan of Matalan so was delighted to see so many must-have pieces strutting down the runway… and even more delighted when the models started dancing!

I particularly loved this white shirt and shorts outfit. Perfect for summer in the city!

Emma, Sara and I were persuaded to enter the Style Contest and nervously took to the catwalk to parade for the judges, including Look magazine style editor Zoe Aird and Mirror fashion editor Amber Morales.

I was representin’ the Great British High Street (as always) in my H&M dress, ASOS belt and necklace and (after much deliberation) orange patent peeptoes from Next.

Photobucket

The day was curated by a very Alan Partridge-esque Alex Carter (whom I love and adore, precisely for his Alan Partridge-ness), looking very sharp in a Matalan suit…

The Benefit Beauty Bus was on hand for makeovers and touch ups – a must in the blazing sunshine, as even Estee Lauder Double Wear started to slide.

An utterly fantastic day was only improved by the outfits on display. Peacock feathers, hot pink leather, thigh-high splits and plant pot handbags were all outdone by this amazing (and delicious) get up…

We think she was sponsored by Krispy Kreme.

Many (too many, if my nap on the train home was anything to go by) Mojitos later and the sun started to set on Ladies Day. Stunning Lystra Adams won the Style Contest dressed in head-to-to Viv Westwood, I kicked off my orange patent peeptoes in favour of the flip flops from my goody bag and ate fast food straight from the box. My so-called glamorous life!

Project Take 10 Challenge 10 – Peacocks

Posted in Daily Outfits.

Us Take 10 ladies are no strangers to Peacocks. They sponsored challenge 3 with a dress from their Pearl Lowe range, and now they’re back for challenge 9. With another dress! They know the way to a girl’s heart.

Peacocks by Design Spotty Prom Dress, H&M chambray shirt, New Look wedges, wicker bag via car boot sale

This pretty pleated prom dress is from the new Peacocks by Design range and costs £35. I was unsure at first – my ghostly palor isn’t best suited to this coffee creme colour. But I really couldn’t resist the pleated skirt. So swishy! A quick denim fix and some chunky wedges soon sorted me out – I went for a 50s housewife vibe. Very Betty Draper, I feel.

Looking lovely, ladies!

So, how did I do? Would you style the dress differently?

Dare to Bare? The Return of the Crop Top

Posted in Daily Outfits.

Warning – you are about to see a belly on the blog…

Topshop striped crop top and jeans, Primark cardigan and pumps, ASOS necklace

Crop tops remind me of school discos and holidays to Disneyland Paris. I wore them (in my infinite style wisdom) age 12 with leggings and baseball caps but have resolutely avoided them ever since.

Unfortunately for me and my pot belly, the crop is a key shape for SS11 and all manner of minuscule versions have appeared on the high street. Some look small enough to belong in a 2 year old’s wardrobe, but some are surprisingly wearable, especially if you cheat. And that’s where the high waisted jeans come in.

I think I can just about cope with a flash of flesh. But what about you – will you dare to bare for the return of the crop?
