Sunday Smile #14

Posted in Fashion.

Happy Sunday, dear followers! I trust you’re all enjoying your weekends? Good, glad to hear it. As I cancelled my 7am boot sale alarm in favour of sleeping off the cider I consumed last night, today’s Sunday Smile stars the sale bargains I’ve picked up from the high street over the last few weeks.

Now, you know full well I love me a bargain. Finding a pretty piece with a hefty discount is a glorious thing, and I’ve started to look at sale shopping as a personal challenge. I hunt for the biggest savings on stuff I know I’ll wear again and again. And look at my spoils!

Skirt, £35 down to £15 in Topshop. You’ve already seen me wearing this but it’s such a cute bargain, I had to include it. I can’t wait to pair it with thick tights and boots when it gets colder.

Tassel pumps, £25 down to £10, Topshop. Pumps are my shoe staples for autumn so these were a wonderful find.

Photobucket
Black and denim skinny jeans, £22.90 down to £9.90, Mango. Great quality, fab fit and in my two favourite washes.

Quilted leather bag with chain strap, £39.99 down to £19.99, Zara. I’ve been searching for the perfect black leather bag for a while, and this is it. I love the tassel drawstring!

Cotton striped dress, £19.99 down to £9.99, Zara. A classic design with added detail – a double collar and pockets. So cute.

Brown suede cowboy boots, £79.99 down to £19.99 (!!), Zara. Saving the best ’til last. These boots are my favourites – I’ll be wearing them with dresses and bare legs while it’s still warm (ish) and jeans and knits when the weather turns.

So, lots of lovely sale buys to feast your eyes upon. Have you found yourself suddenly at the sale rail, arms laden with goodies? Are you waiting for the AW10 collections to hit the shelves instead? Or maybe you’re a better person than I and have returned from an early morning boot sale with a whole new wardrobe? Do tell.

PS – Only a few hours left to enter my Funk Rock giveaway – I’ll be announcing the winner at 8pm. If you haven’t entered yet, go go go!

As Inspired By…

This week I’m inspired by Wearing it Today. This lovely lady is Contributing Fashion Editor for one of my favourite magazines, Red. My trusty August edition tells me her name is Laura – huge apologies if I’m wrong!

Laura’s style is gorgeously grown up and fabulously chic. I love her simple separates, dressed up with statement shoes and eye-catching accessories. This outfit caught my eye – so laidback but still luxurious. Here’s my take on it…

Haha! The last picture makes me laugh so much. I had the giggles!

Anyway. These Zara trousers were such a good buy – they go with anything and are so easy to wear. I paired them with a simple grey tee, leather accessories and my gorgeous vintage purse necklace from Zara Taylor. I do wish my labels were as impressive as Laura’s, but this high street version will have to do. Saying that, I am hideously envious of these Chanel shoes. Lucky lady.

Who or what is inspiring your style today? A fellow blogger, celebrity, cultural muse or dear friend? Or maybe you are the source of inspiration? Anyone paid you a compliment today? Asked you where your shoes were from, or how you got your hair to look so great? Share, please!

First up, a huge, HUGE thank you to everyone who took the time to comment on yesterday’s post. It was so encouraging to hear your personal experiences with blogger jealousy, and even better to know so many of you are ready to leave the figures behind in favour of just enjoying it. Bravo to us – we can do it!

As well as jealousy, yesterday’s post touched on stress. Stress is something that affects me quite badly – I have a terribly short temper, I’m quick to fly off the handle and I cry easily. I blame my creative (read – dramatic) temperament! For the last year-and-a-bit, I’ve struggled with an 80 mile commute to and from a pressurised job which has left me sapped of energy and lacking in enthusiasm for anything.

So, I’m very pleased to officially announce I have a shiny new job, a mere 5 miles from my house! Hooray!

I’m going to be Online Communities Manager at a youth research agency in Leeds and I’m super excited. My start date is 16th August and I’m already planning my first day outfit (well, what did you expect?!). I’m hoping my new job will mark the start of a change for me and the Mr – new careers, new house, maybe even a holiday or two!

Are you making any big changes to your life? Are you venturing into the unknown, taking a different path or trying something new? Or is it the little things that make the difference? Let me know.

The Blog Issue – Jealousy

Posted in Blogging, Daily Outfits.

Although A Little Bird was only hatched nine months ago, I’ve been documenting my life for quite some time. I started on paper, upgraded to an Open Diary, then Live Journal, followed by MySpace, Facebook and Tumblr before finally settling here. I’ve been blogging in a variety of guises for 10 years, and during that time I’ve had my fair share of issues.

In this regular feature, I’ll be exploring and discussing some of the things we, as bloggers of any description, face every day. And we’re starting with a biggie – jealousy.

(Can I squeeze an outfit in first? Come on, you won’t even notice it. Just a quick one…)

Okay, enough of that. Down to the serious stuff.

I refuse to believe there’s a blogger out there who has yet to turn slightly green whilst perusing another blog. Blogger jealousy comes in many forms – follower envy (as in, they have more than you), comment envy (as in, they have more than you), money envy (as in… you get it), style envy, home envy, designer label envy, lifestyle envy… on and on it goes. There is a rivalry between bloggers thats breeds this jealousy and it can often lead to deleted blogs, hate-filled comments and even out-and-out war.

As bloggers go head to head, brandishing their Google Analytics stats, waving their sponsorships and clutching their freebies, every aspect of our blogs is scrutinised. What does this comment mean? Why have I lost a follower? If I give in to LOOKBOOK, will I get more hits? (All questions I’ve muttered to myself while refreshing the page obsessively.)

Over the last few months, I’ve been suffering quite badly with stress. My blog started as an escape from everyday life, a place to share and enjoy fashion. I didn’t mean for it to morph into a gauntlet for battle, but I find myself constantly comparing this blog to others, wondering why growth is quicker for them than it is for me, why they do this, how they do that.

Well, I’m taking a stand. I will not obsess over the numbers. I will not compare myself to other blogs. I will remind myself that my blog is an amazing achievement because people outside my immediate family read it. I won’t chastise myself for missing the all-important Monday post. I will stop trying to categorise myself and my posts, and I will remember the reason I started doing this – to share, to connect, to enjoy. Will you join me?

If you follow me on Twitter you might’ve seen me tweeting about the gig I was at last night. The Mr is a drummer and has been in bands since we got together 8 whole years ago. I’ve been to (pretty much) every gig, from dingy basements to huge arenas, with three people to three hundred. I’ve carried cymbals, driven tour vans and drank lots of beer from plastic cups. I’ve warded off groupies, sold CDs and moshed ’til the wee hours. Hell, I’ve even been on stage a few times!

In the early days, we’d go to at least two gigs a week. A big group of us would travel by any means necessary, rocking up at random pubs with guitars slung over our shoulders. We’d commandeer a corner, drink beer, eat crisps and take photos. We were the inner circle, we got shout outs during sets and we knew all the words. We were at college or uni with no jobs to worry about, blasting Brand New from our cars and eating McDonald’s. As cliché as it sounds, it was a golden age.

My ‘girlfriend of the band’ uniform was always the same – skinny jeans, vintage band tees, Converse boots, stacks of bangles and plenty of black eyeliner. Last night, as I looked around at young girls wearing Urban Outfitters and channelling Alexa Chung, it got me thinking about how much has changed in the relatively short time the band has been… well, disbanded.

Last night’s gig was their first in over a year, and before that they were playing one offs as favours for friends. I wore a cute skirt, cream suede pumps and carried my bag at all times. I drank Diet Coke, sat on a proper chair rather than perching on the bar, and left at 10.30pm. And if I’m really honest, I didn’t mind. I am older now. Touring the country isn’t part of life any more. It was brilliant fun to catch up with friends and enjoy live music from the sidelines. I still got that feeling of immense pride when the Mr picked up his sticks and went crazy. But I was more than happy to jump in my car afterwards, drive home and put on my PJs.

Is there anything you do differently now to when you were younger? Has your style matured, your attitude towards things changed, the way you interact with people developed? Or are you still exactly the same person, just a few years older? I’d love to know.
