Topshop jeans, Primark tee, thrifted jumper (originally Gap), Primark mac, thrifted shopper, Primark ring, Eclectic Eccentricity necklace

Isn’t it windy today? So windy that when I stepped outside, my hair was instantly whipped up into a style I like to call ‘bird nest chic’. Not exactly the look I was going for!

I stormed back inside, threw open my wardrobe and rifled through, angrily cursing Mother Nature under my breath. Now, as a girl with an abnormally large head, hats do me no favours. I’ve also never been able to pull off a hooded top with that modelesque, sports lux aplomb… I look more like a wallet-stealer than wonderfully stylish. Head-based accessories are really not my forte.

But then I happened upon the vintage silk scarves I picked up at that vintage fair a few weeks ago. This muted floral number matched my creamy greens colour scheme perfectly. After a bit of rolling and knot experimentation (should it go at the front, a la Wino’s cleaner chic?) I had one pretty perfect hair-tidier. Hooray!

When I first mentioned the silk scarves I bought, a few of you asked for tips on how to wear them. This is definitely an easy look to pull off, and I bet it’d look even better with long, loose waves. The scarf is a big, square shape so I folded it into a triangle and then rolled it into a strip, making sure the point of the triangle was tucked within the roll. I then just arranged it over my hair and tied it in a double knot at the back! Lovely stuff.

Is the weather determining your outfit today? Or did you throw caution to the wind (literally) and wear a ra ra skirt sans tights? I’d love to know!

Topshop jeans, Thomas Pink shirt, New Look wedges, thrifted cardigan, H&M belt, vintage pearls

I feel like a little girl playing dress up in her mother’s wardrobe today. The formula for this whimsical trip down memory lane?
Take one oversized man’s shirt
Add a string of pearls that swing on down to your knees
Wear open toes with school girl socks
Voila! Instant seven year old chic. One of my favourite pastimes as a child was rootling through too-big clothes and parading about in all manner of outfits… which is actually not that dissimilar to my favourite pastimes as an adult! Between them, my mum and grandma had the most wonderful collection of couture, including a full length rabbit fur coat, a Versace suit in electric blue with gold buttons and killer shoulder pads and countless pairs of towering heels. The Holy Grail, however, was my mum’s wedding dress – a true 80s classic complete with billowing lace sleeves and 55 pearl buttons up the back (my sister and I counted).
I was a precocious child and forced my long-suffering siblings to act as groom (poor brother) and mother of the bride (poor YOUNGER sister!) many a time. We would clump up and down the garden path, often greeted by a shaggy dog acting as vicar. My dad filmed some of these special occasions and watching them back now makes me weep with laughter.
There are a number of pieces in my wardrobe that I know I’ll keep for my children’s dress up games. The LK Bennett dress I wore as a bridesmaid for my mum last year (second time around and no, she didn’t wear the original dress!), the Dune shoes with towering, glittery heels and the outrageous leopard print faux fur jacket I wore all last winter. Clothes like these deserve a second life as too-big costumes for excitable youngsters, not a lifetime of drudgery in a dusty storage box.
Do you have memories of dressing up as a child? Is there anything in your wardrobe you’ll donate to the dressing up box? I’d love to know!

Blog sale skirt, Primark tee, H&M shirt, H&M tights, New Look wedges, Primark belt, thrifted ring

My hair is rather ridiculously long in these photos. Note to self – get a hair cut!
Hello to you all. First off, let me say a HUGE thank you to everyone who’s entered my giveaway – I’ve had an overwhelming response, both here and on Twitter. You’ve still got plenty of time to enter (until Sunday, when I’ll announce the winner), so off you pop if you haven’t already.
I think these New Look wedges will become a fashion favourite of mine – I just love them. They go with EVERYTHING and only cost me £15! Who said open toes before May was a style sin? Definitely not me. These beauties are very similar and perfect for prancing about in the sunshine.
I’m also quite madly in love with the pretty cropped chambray shirt I’m wearing, which I bought from H&M last summer. Miss Selfridge have something similar to team with your swishy skirts and a straw hat.
I’ll be wearing these two pieces over and over – dressed up and down, for day and night. What two things in your wardrobe will you be wearing out as the weather warms up? Have you found your favourite floral frock, or discovered those denim shorts Daisy Duke would be jealous of? I’d love to know!

Sunday Smile #1

Posted in Home, Second Hand Shopping.

I want Sunday Smiles to become a regular feature on A Little Bird, starting right here, on Sunday 21st March.

It’s pretty self explanatory – a Sunday Smile is anything that makes me smile (duh) on a Sunday (duh again!). It could be anything, from something pretty I picked up in a charity shop to some spectacular baking or a scene from the great outdoors. It won’t be fashion-focused, unless I snag a Mulberry bag at a car boot… a regular daydream of mine! It’s my chance to talk about the other things in life that make me happy. And we’ll start with…

British Daffodils, sitting atop my fab new chair

Now, as pretty as the Daffs are, just look at the chair! I picked this cute little thing up from Ikea last weekend and put it together all by myself (after much frustrated whining and throwing of screwdrivers). It’s a child’s chair, cost £5.99 and fits perfectly into my shabby chic bedroom. Flat surfaces are in short supply here at our flat, so this chair has become a shelf for all manner of objects. When the Daffs are gone, I’ll be replacing them with this…

Thrifted teapot and teacup set, £1.69
I think I have a slight obsession with floral china. Funny thing is, I don’t drink tea or coffee! I picked this little beauty up at my favourite charity shop and with eyes like saucers, took it to the till and then whisked it home. It’s currently sitting in the kitchen, patiently waiting for its time on the chair.
What or who is making you smile this Sunday? Tell all in the comments below – I’d love to know! Oh, and don’t forget to enter my giveaway.

H&M dress, Accessorize tights, thrifted blouse, Primark trench, thrifted brogues, Primark headband, Primark belt, Pandora bracelet, ?? umbrella

Please excuse my strange striptease photo at the end there. I wanted to show off the blouse under my trench but it’s RAINING! After a week of glorious sunshine as well. Tsk.

Anyway, it’s the last day of The Gossip Girl Style Challenge and I’ve taken on Blair for the second time, complete with headband, high necked blouse and coloured tights. When I started this challenge I thought Blair’s style was closest to my own but she’s been the hardest to capture. What do you think? Did I get it spot on here or was Monday better?

I’ve had so much fun with this challenge – I love experimenting with different looks and finding new ways to wear things. The biggest surprise was Vanessa’s look, which I thought would be the hardest but turned out pretty well. My favourite of the week is Serena’s second round. I’ll be wearing this dress again and again!

Which look was your favourite? Cast your vote in the poll to your right and let me know which look you chose by leaving a comment. Normal posting resumes tomorrow, when I’ll be announcing a fabulous giveaway for all my wonderful followers. See you then!
