Here’s the second post in my mission to give my beloved denims the blog exposure they deserve. This is what I wore for my flight out to Milan on Sunday – I know, I know, jeans on a plane? What madness is this?! But actually, these Hudson skinnies are hella comfortable because they’re really stretchy – no stomach-sucking required.

Aeroplanes have a microclimate all of their own, particularly if you’re flying with Ryanair – one minute it’s sweltering, the next your teeth are chattering. I layered up with a simple striped sweater and a huge chunky cardi to be cuddled or cast aside as necessary.

My trusty knomo tote came along too, packed with all my technological essentials plus about 20 different chargers, plug adaptors, carry cases and a notebook and pen for good measure.

When you’re travelling, it’s a good idea to wear your bulkiest pieces rather than attempt to stuff them into your already fit-to-burst suitcase. Hopefully this outfit doesn’t look too Bag Lady… what do you think, did I get away with it? Chic enough for Milan?

How to Pack Light

Travelling to different parts of the UK (and, if I’m lucky, the world) has become part of my job and I’ve made many short trips in the past year. Packing is never much fun, but with plenty of journeys under my belt I’m now quite a dab hand at rolling my clothes, stuffing socks into shoes and never taking more pairs of pants than is strictly necessary.

I’m flying out to Milan today, so I thought I’d share my packing routine with you. Luckily I have a checked bag this time, but for reference this suitcase – which was £50 from TK Maxx and is the most beautiful patent leather – is suitable as hand luggage.

They’re not quite visible in these photos, but first in my bag is a pair of knee high heeled black leather boots. They’re easy to pack as they lay flat at the bottom of my suitcase, and versatile for short trips as they go with everything, from jeans to dresses. Mine are from NW3 at Hobbs and I wear them day and night, for all occasions. So useful!

Clothing-wise, I’m taking two printed jersey wrap dresses. These pack so well – they can be rolled up and squashed in without creasing, and I’ll wear them with flats and a cardigan during the day then with boots and my studded Zara belt for the evening. The green leopard print is from Whistles, while the red spotted is by Diane von Furstenberg (c/o). I’ve also chucked in a couple of statement necklaces to mix and match throughout my trip.

The spotty chiffon blouse (Topshop via charity shop) is another great packing piece. It rolls down to practically nothing and I can swap my travelling t-shirt for this to create a whole new outfit without taking up more space in my suitcase.

I keep my travel toiletries bag packed and ready to go, so it’s really easy to just grab and throw in. Inside I’ve decanted all my skincare into travel bottles and packed them with a mini hairbrush, mini shower puff, toothbrush, toothpaste, cotton pads, and hair bands and clips.

I like taking a full bottle of perfume when I go away – decanting expensive perfume seems sacrilegious –  so I make sure it’s nestled within my case under layers of clothing, to protect it from the bumps and bangs of Ryanair’s hold.

I use the mesh compartment in the top of my suitcase for larger toiletries that are hard to decant – hair wax, moisturiser, hair oil, deodorant. I’ve also squeezed an extra pair of flats in here – I’m wearing ankle boots for the flight so it’s useful to have another pair of shoes in case of emergency!

My trusty ghds are coming too – with the wire wrapped around the closed straighteners, they slot nicely down one side. And finally, a very important piece not to be forgotten – my PJs. When travelling I leave my usual fleecy trousers and top behind and take a sleep shirt instead, as it takes up less room but is still cosy and comfortable.

And here’s the finished result! I’ve popped a few extras in on top – my (very condensed!) makeup bag and a thick cotton purse with all my jewellery inside. I’ve still got my basics to add in – underwear, some long sleeved tees for extra layers, tights, a few pairs of socks and a couple of plug adaptors. All that will sit nicely on top and I’ll be good to go.

I’ll be wearing my chunky knitted cardigan, heavy jeans and bulky boots to the airport as these are the trickiest pieces to pack. Hopefully there’ll still be space for some Milano shopping… there’s a Sephora at Milan Central Station and it’s open ’til 10pm!

What are your tips for packing light and avoiding those pesky baggage charges (Ryanair, I’m looking at you)?

Jeans of the Week – Straight Leg

Some girls are Dress-and-Heels Girls. Some are Stella-McCartney-Jumpsuit-and-Wedge-Trainers Girls. Some are even Miniscule-Sequin-Hot-Pants-and-Not-Much-Else Girls.

I am most definitely a Jeans-and-T-Shirt Girl.

I wear jeans a lot more regularly than this blog would suggest. They’re my get-up-and-out-the-door favourites – I wear them when I’m stuck for ideas, when everything else is in the wash or when I just fancy a denim day. The right pair are flattering even on fat days and you can go for months without washing them. Come on, you know you do it too.

With my love of all things denim revealed, it’s a little odd, then, that they don’t feature here more often. Something I’m planning to change in 2013 as I give myself a bit of a style break and allow my often-hidden comforts to sneak in a bit more – chunky knits, Converse sneakers and jeans.

For the next four weeks I’ll be working with Jeanography to bring you my Jeans of the Week – a different pair with a different style to create a different look every week. Another thing I’m planning for 2013 is to invest more in my favourite basics – before Christmas, I bought a pair of Levi’s that knocked all my H&M, Zara and Topshop denims for six, and although £95 is a lot to spend on jeans, I’ve worn them at least 3 times a week for the last two months. I’m not gonna get all cost-per-wear preachy on you, but you get my gist.

So, here’s to the Year of the Jean. My first pair are these dark wash, straight leg beauties by James Jeans. I haven’t strayed from my beloved skinnies for many years, so it was nice to slip into something different, and these are insanely flattering on my Christmas Hips (TM). Plus if vanity sizing means I’m a 29in waist in these, then I support the concept entirely.

Are you a fan of jeans? Got a favourite pair?

Long Vs Short

When I first had all my hair cut off, I didn’t for a second consider the implications of shedding my long, blonde locks. I just wanted a change, something drastic. A pixie crop was the answer and I stayed that way for years. As my hair is naturally fine, keeping it short does wonders for its volume (and my patience – I hate styling it).

When I tell people my hair is naturally blonde and used to be very long, some will give me the sympathetic head tilt and ask ‘do you miss it?’. For years I was delighted with my short hair and couldn’t understand the female need for long, lustrous locks… but then something changed. All of a sudden, I was desperate for flowing hair, with tumbling waves and a fringe to peek from under.

In my case, it’s a need for change more than anything… but I do think there’s a kind of cultural acceptance for females with long hair. Disney Princesses have long hair. It’s so inherently feminine that even Doc Martens look girly, and if you wear a Peter Pan collar you’re in danger of spontaneously combusting into saccharine-sweet, Zooey Deschanel flames. Also, you can swish it.

how to wear hair extensions

As much as I try not to link my happiness to the way I look, I am enjoying this new mermaid hair. And I can now understand why so many women with beautiful hair are terrified of hairdressers. As unprogressive as it is, hair is still an indicator of beauty and femininity, and after years without this particular asset, it feels good to go long. Very good.

What do you think – are you staying short or growing out? If you have long hair, would you ever consider the chop?

Hello 27

A few days ago, I turned 27. I’m not freaking out. I don’t feel old. I’m actually quite pleased about it!

So, I’m officially in my ‘late twenties’. I weigh more than I did last year. I’ve given up any hope of ever wearing a crop top. I have a genuine need for eye cream. But I’m ok with all of that. I want to shop in Hobbs, not Nasty Gal. Seriously, I do!

I’m hoping my first outfit of 2013 will set the tone for my year as a 27 year-old. I spent much of 2012 feeling old and trying to shoehorn myself into trends (and Disco Pants) that just weren’t me, but it’s like a switch has been flicked and I feel entirely ready to embrace a more natural style – for my age, my body type and my personality. So that’s comfy cardis and cute blouses with statement lipstick and killer jewellery, then.

I have a pretty exciting year ahead  – a wedding (mine!), honeymoon (again, mine!), maybe a house move and another kitten to add to our family. Can’t wait to get it started!

Are you embracing your age? Tell me your digits – promise I won’t spill the beans 😉
