My Everyday Makeup

Posted in Beauty.

Here’s a little-known and not-that-interesting fact about me – I love putting my makeup on. Over the years I’ve honed my technique and it’s now second nature. I wear full makeup pretty much every day and find the ritual of putting it on really soothing. Plus, the transformative effect of a bit of concealer is quite astonishing and very good for the soul (probably).

This is my everyday makeup look. It takes 5-10 minutes to apply and has only changed very slightly since I first started wearing full makeup 10 years ago. Let’s take a look at the products I use, shall we?

Benefit Porefessional | Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturiser in Porcelain | Estee Lauder Double Wear Light in 1-0 | Benefit Boi-ing concealer in 01 | Rimmel Hide the Blemish Concealer in Ivory | Mac Mineralize Skinfinish Natural Pressed Powder in Medium

I have oily, shine-prone skin so perfecting my base has always been the most important part of my makeup routine. I start with Benefit’s Porefessional, which fills open pores and smooths the skin ready for foundation. In summer, I use Estee Lauder’s Double Wear Light which gives even, long-lasting coverage without being heavy or cakey. On holiday or in very hot weather/Sundays when I can’t be bothered, I use Laura Mercier’s Tinted Moisturiser instead, for very subtle coverage and a nice ‘illuminating’ effect.

I suffer with serious dark circles under my eyes (they’re hereditary – thanks mum) so a good under-eye concealer is my saviour. Benefit’s Boi-ing is thick and creamy but applies smoothly and really brightens the whole area – I apply under my eye, in the corners and across my eyelid for full coverage.

My skin is relatively clear these days, but Rimmel’s Hide the Blemish – a throwback to my spotty teen years – still helps me out. It covers redness and scarring like a boss. Then I set everything with Mac’s Mineralize Skinfinish Natural Powder which has great staying power.

Benefit Hervana Face Powder | Benefit Hoola Bronzing Powder | Topshop Cream Blush in Neon Rose and High Five

A bit of blusher often saves me from looking like the walking dead. I love Topshop’s cream blushers because they’re quite bright and very long-lasting, meaning my pasty cheeks don’t make an appearance ’til bedtime. Benefit’s Hervana Face Powder has been something of a revelation – I was dubious about applying a pink-and-purple toned powder all over my face, but it really adds life to my skin and takes the edge off that sallow colour pale skin can have. Finally, if I’m feeling summery or have a slight tan, Hoola Bronzing Powder gives me a nice golden glow. Lovely.

Urban Decay Naked 2 Palette | Shavata Arch Enhancer Pencil | Shavata Pencil in Dusk | Fashionista Secret Gel Liner in Black | Benefit They’re Real Mascara in Black | Nars Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Bolero | Topshop Lipstick in Ohh La La

I don’t do much with my eyes – wearing glasses means they’re never really my focus, and because they have a tendency to water and be generally a bit pathetic, I usually stick to the basics. I use the Bootycall shade from the Naked 2 palette as a base – it’s a very pale shade so I take it right up to my brow bone and into the corners of my eyes. If I’m feeling a little 50s, I’ll go for a cat eye look with a sweep of Fashionista’s Secret Gel Liner which, once it’s in place, doesn’t budge all day. Then a few coats of Benefit’s They’re Real (the UK’s number 1 selling mascara, yo!) to emphasise my lashes.

Eyebrows are kinda my life – I have mine threaded, either at the ridiculously-overpriced-but-awesome Shavata or at a local salon. I use the Shavata Arch Enhancer along my brow bone and in the corner of my eyes (it’s a great highlighter) then define and fill with a brow pencil. Awesome eyebrows, done.

Lipstick is the only area I really take any chances with – I love really bright colours and rich, matte textures are my favourites. Topshop’s Lipstick range is excellent and Ohh La La, Brighton Rock and All About Me are in constant rotation. If I’m feeling more feminine, Nars’ Bolero pencil is a lovely soft pink and works well with more dramatic eyes.

And that, ladies and gents, is how to create a masterpiece 😉

Is there anything better than clothing with a novelty animal print? I don’t think there is.

The relentless grey sky and fact I’m wearing 50 denier tights in July is getting me down, to be honest. But rather than wallow in stylish self pity and take to wearing a onesie in public, I decided to cheer myself up with a new dress. A dress that cost £10, and has dogs on it. Dogs on a dress. The key to sartorial happiness.

I should point out that these dogs may not be Dachshunds. They may, in fact, be Beagles. But I’m a sucker for alliteration, so let’s pretend the title works.

Are you suffering through the British Summertime? What are you wearing to lift your spirits?

A Girl and Her Skinny Jeans

Posted in Daily Outfits, Fashion.

I sometimes think that should’ve been the title of my blog, because it’s certainly the most accurate description of my general approach to fashion. I love skinny jeans. I live in them. They’re like a clingy, not-particularly-comfortable security blanket.

Jeans, Zara | Shirt, Zara | Leather jacket, Sandro via The Dressmaker’s Vault | Boots, Valensi c/o Sarenza | Necklace, H&M | Ring, H&M

I always find it bizarre that so many people just don’t wear jeans. I’ve always thought of them as an absolute staple in every wardrobe, like nude underwear or black leather flats. They’re classic, they never date, they can be thrown on in an instant and dressed up or down. My love for denim knows no bounds and if I’m really honest, without this blog I’d probably wear my skinny jeans every day.

I own about 20 pairs of jeans in a variety of fits and hues. I’ve probably bought from every high street range available, and have a tried and tested list of my favourites. If you’re still doubtful about denim, here are my recommendations – go on, try a pair!

  • Topshop’s Kristen High Waisted Jeans – classic skinny jeans with a very slim leg and high waist. This style retain their shape really well after washing and wearing and come in a range of shades. At £40 they’re not the cheapest but definitely worth the price. See how I wore them here
  • Next Zip Pocket Skinny Jeans – form-fitting skinny jeans with a mid rise in a range of bright colours. The denim on these jeans is quite thick and stiff so they can be uncomfortable, but I love the range of colours and at £24 they’re great value. See how I wore them here
  • Zara TRF Slim Jeans – slim leg jeans with a mid rise and soft, stretchy denim. These are the jeans I’m wearing in these photos. I picked them up in the Zara sale for £17.99 and got three pairs – the light wash (shown above), the dark wash and the black wash. They’re great, inexpensive, everyday jeans but do sag around the knees and waist after a few wears.
  • Gap Sexy Boyfriend Jeans – loose fitting with tapered leg and soft denim. Despite the awful name, these are my favourite Sunday Afternoon Jeans. The tapered leg makes them much more flattering than other boyfriend jeans – I need to try them with heels! More expensive at £49.95 but very good quality.
  • UJ Jeans – a range of styles and washes with free leg alterations in-store. I love Uniqlo jeans – the heavier denim means they sit nicely without creasing or sagging and there’s a range of shades to suit everyone. Best of all, though, is their in-store alterations service – try a pair on, get a member of staff to pin them to your desired length and pick them up 20 minutes later, the perfect length for your pins. Do you wear jeans? Which are your favourite styles? And if you don’t – why not?

Life through my Instagram lens…

At home

I’ve been working on this little corner of my living room for a few weeks now. There are two deep shelves set above our TV and I collect bits and bobs from charity shops to fill the space – I need a few more vintage books, but otherwise it’s looking good! When I first posted this photo to Instagram, a few people said they loved the gin & tonic print. It’s actually a £1.50 card from M&S that I put in a 50p car boot sale frame!

That brings me on to the next image – another card in another car boot sale frame. This time it’s a Gemma Correll card from Paperchase (£2). I always pick up frames at car boots – they rarely cost more than a pound and lots of different styles look great hanging next to each other.

I was looking through old photos on my camera and came across this one of baby Travis. N’aawwww! When I look at it next to a photo of him from the other day (he was sleepy!), I can’t believe how tiny he was back then. We’ve had him nearly a year now and I just can’t imagine our house without his meows. Such a cutie.

Last week was a busy one for me – I was double booked with work so style took a bit of a backseat as I toiled away at my computer. This was a typical outfit – skinny jeans (H&M), tee (Topshop), blazer (Zara) and sandals (c/o Sarenza).

My lovely Duke Studios co-resident Adam, who works for Evernote, brought a big boxful of t-shirts in to pass around. I love the design – lots of classic British things with the line ‘Evernote <3 UK’ at the bottom. I felt very Silicone Valley wandering around the house while wearing it.

Horrible weather continues to batter the country and up north, we’ve had flooding, thunder and lightning, blazing sunshine and gale force winds all in the space of an afternoon. I was determined to wear this lace dress from Zara, despite it being hideously inappropriate for the endless grey days of this faux summer. The neon yellow sandals are by Esprit and were sent to me by Zalando.

I bought this vintage silk scarf at the Oxfam shop at Isle of Wight Festival and have been wearing it lots since. It looks much better with curls – I love that messy, undone style. I sometimes get asked about my daily makeup, so here it is – for my face I used Benefit Porefessional, Estee Lauder Double Wear Light in shade 1, Benefit Bo-ing Concealer in shade 1 (for dark circles), Rimmel’s Hide The Blemish concealer in Ivory (for blemishes), Mac Mineralise Skin Finish Powder in Medium and Benefit Hervana Face Powder, then applied Topshop cream blush in Neon Rose to the apples of my cheeks. For my eyes I used the Naked 2 palette (lightest shade, the name of which evades me!), Benefit High Brow in the corner of my eyes and along the brow bone, Shavata brow pencil in Dusk to define my eyebrows and Benefit They’re Real mascara. I finished things off with Topshop lipstick in Ooh La La. This is pretty much what I wear every day and I’m a bit of a pro at applying it after all these years, if I do say so myself!

Yep… I went there. I downloaded 50 Shades of Grey on Thursday and despite much Twitter moaning about the quality of the writing (shocking… how many times can one character say ‘oh my’?!), I’d finished it by Saturday. And now I’m starting on the second book. 50 Shades Darker. I am disappointed in myself.

I picked up this adorable Vera Meat ring in the ASOS sale… lots of people asked me about it but sadly it’s sold out now, although you may be able to get one on their website. I wear it on my little finger and it’s quickly become my new everyday ring.

More of the neon Esprit sandals! Rob tells me I look like I’m ready to cycle at night with these on – the colour doesn’t translate very well on camera, but they are spectacularly bright. I love them.

Peonies are my favourite flowers (although it’s a close one between them and tulips), but they are SO hard to find. I picked these up at Waitrose and they’ve been filling my living room with their beautiful scent. To get the ‘bokeh’ effect on this photo and the ones above, I used the PicFx app. I’m a bit obsessed and have to really stop myself using the effects on every photo!

Last weekend was spent hanging out at my mum’s house… I love going back because there’s nothing quite like the comforts of your childhood home. These amazing florals welcomed me in as I made my way up the drive.

On Thursday I headed to London for client meetings, a Uniqlo sweep and dinner with Gem and Kristabel. When I’m in London I work from an office in Knightsbridge and always marvel at Harrods as I go past – this week the beautiful building was looking very patriotic. I met Gem at her new offices – Company Magazine, no less – and had a peek in the fashion cupboard. Very exciting!

Yesterday was quite exciting – Rob and I went to look at our potential wedding venue. We’re hoping to have our ceremony in a beautiful building which has these amazing grounds, then head back to Rob’s parents’ for the rest of the day. We need to discuss some things, but I have everything crossed that we can have our day the way we want it… I love this garden!

The Kate Middleton Dress

Posted in Daily Outfits, Fashion.

Kate Middleton isn’t really on my style radar. I like her, sure – she’s got that classic English Rose look and I’m sure she’d be a delight at afternoon tea. Not that I’ve ever had afternoon tea, but I imagine it’s just fabulous.

She’s captivated the world with her bouncy hair and shiny teeth, and she’s done wonders for British fashion by wearing homegrown designs from LK Bennett, Reiss and McQueen all over the world. But… she’s a bit boring. Just a little. I’m not sure how experimental a high profile royal can be  (although Beatrice and Euginie seem to get away with it), but seriously – another blue wrap dress? Courts, again? Sometimes I wish she’d whack on the Litas, ombré her hair and get spotted dancing on a table somewhere in Shoreditch.

I was charity shopping in Brighton a few weeks ago when a peek of polka dot blue caught my eye. I grabbed it off the rail to get a better look – a very classic royal blue polka dot wrap dress. So Kate. So Refined. So boring. But being the busty-and-hippy type, I knew the shape would suit me and at £3.99 I could hardly leave it behind (it’s this way of thinking that’s left me with a gigantic ‘to eBay’ pile). So I snapped it up and brought it home with me, thinking it’d go the way of those vintage leather shorts and the slightly-too-small embroidered bed jacket.

But…

It’s a keeper, isn’t it? Sometimes classic just works. Dresses like this can add years and look frumpy, but a few neon accessories, some clever belting and a cute pair of ankle boots give the style a modern edge and move it away from granny territory.

I love to see Kate try something like this with one of her classic dresses – I think she’d really rock a statement necklace and her feet are crying out for an alternative to those mid-heel courts.

What about you – do you like Ms Middleton’s style? How would you spice up the classic wrap dress?
