What I Wore – New York City

Posted in Daily Outfits, Fashion, Travel.

I’m currently holed up in a hotel room in Boston, recovering from five (ish) amazing days in New York. Rob and I have had the best time in the city – after dreaming about visiting for 10 years, the real life experience surpassed my expectations. Wandering around the West Village, crossing the Brooklyn Bridge  and riding the subway just felt like being home. I know I’ll be back within the next 12 months and it will be a city I’ll visit time and time again.

NYC is known for its fashion credentials but I actually found the city style very laidback, simple and relaxed… possibly because we didn’t really go to the Garment District, where many fashion powerhouses are based. The places we frequented had a casual aesthetic, maybe with a touch of hipster cool but without the Shoreditch pretention. The mix of basic pieces with statement accessories and cute details was perfect for busy days walking the length of Manhattan and I was secretly delighted when a New Yorker told me I looked ‘so New York’. Here’s what I wore…
Day Two

Our first day in New York was spent getting our bearings and discovering our surroundings, so I didn’t get chance to snap a pic. This photo is from our second day, which was wet, rainy and very humid. We hunted down the building used for exterior shots in Friends, then headed over to the American Museum of Natural History for a wander around the exhibitions.

On day three we headed to Tribeca for breakfast at Sarabeth’s, then walked down to Ground Zero to see the new World Trade construction. After a brief stop at the Hudson to see the Statue of Liberty, we headed over the Brooklyn Bridge to discover DUMBO and Grimaldi’s Pizza. We didn’t end up eating at Grimaldi’s (pizza ovens + intense humidity + packed restaurant = not good) but grabbed a sidewalk table at a café for open sandwiches and cold Cokes before heading back over the bridge. Walking towards the Manhattan skyline was an amazing experience.

I wore this for cocktails in the East Village with two of my lovely NYC-based clients, who gave me and Rob so many great recommendations then dispatched us to an amazing ramen bar where we ate the most delicious miso ramen and gyoza. We then headed to Times Square to do the proper tourist thing… the first time I saw it I felt completely overwhelmed by the sheer enormity of everything, but we soon learnt that the beauty of New York is found elsewhere. It’s a must-see, but once is definitely enough!

Our last full day in the city was packed – we walked from our hotel which was right by Union Square on 14th Street (first photo) up town to Central Park which was just beautiful. It’s a real haven from the busy city and once you’re in the park, the noise of the traffic seems to melt away to nothing. The only clue you’re in New York is the skyline, and perhaps the baseball games taking place on the pitches!

We also took a trip to floor 70 of the Rockefeller Centre, aka ‘Top of The Rock’ to see breathtaking views of the city, and when we were back on solid ground we headed to Brooklyn again to visit Beacon’s Closet thrift shop – more on that in another post.

For our last night in New York, we decided to treat ourselves to a special dinner at Butter. It. Was. Amazing. We started with Butter Martinis at the bar then had the most delicious steaks with a stack of fries, a mouthwatering garlic butter and plenty of red wine, finished off with a banana parfait. I think it might be the best meal I’ve ever eaten, and walking home through the East Village was pretty fun too.

We flew out of New York at 4.30pm so I wanted something loose and comfortable for the flight. I picked up this vintage shirt dress at Beacon’s Closet for $15 and it worked perfectly! Our final morning was spent eating breakfast in Union Square park, followed by a frantic subway ride to Times Square where I tried (and failed) to buy an ‘I Heart NY’ t-shirt… I could not visit this city without buying one, no matter how cheesy they are! Luckily I found one at JFK airport. And yes, I know they’re sold in Primark…

We’ve left New York but our USA adventure isn’t quite over yet… after two hectic city stays we’re now on our way to Maine to slow things down and enjoy a more relaxed few days with family.

See you soon!

What I Wore – Chicago

Posted in Daily Outfits, Fashion, Travel.

Greetings from Chicago! It’s currently 6.30pm here but about 12.30am in the UK… the perfect time to write a blog post, obviously!

Although most of you will be asleep in preparation for Monday morning (sorry about that), I thought I’d share a few outfit shots from my holiday so far. Today is our last day in Chicago as we’ll be flying out to New York tomorrow, so here’s a little look at what I’ve been wearing in the Windy City…

Days One and Two

We landed in Chicago on Thursday afternoon but our first day was lost in a haze of jet lag and mac ‘n’ cheese. Friday was gloriously sunny so we headed up to the roof terrace of the apartment we’re staying at and took some shots. The views from up there are stunning – you can see Lake Michigan’s port in the background – and there’s a fire pit, BBQs, sun loungers, comfy chairs and even a TV. Amazing.

Day Three

Saturday was a bit dull, so we headed up the Sears Tower (now known as the Willis Tower) where vertigo ruled as we inched out on to the glass balconies and looked out over the city. More amazing views of Chicago from the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere.

Today (or yesterday, UK readers) was gorgeously hot and sunny so bare legs were necessary… although the combination of short skirt + Windy City + boat tour probably wasn’t my cleverest idea. We visited the famous Bean and marvelled at the skyline reflected in it, then took hundreds of photos lying down under it. We also went to The House of Blues for gospel brunch which was AMAZING. More on that (and all our activities) soon.

Tonight we’re heading up the Hancock Tower for cocktails at sunset, then it’s on to NYC tomorrow. See you soon!

Project Take 10 Challenge 21 – H! By Henry Holland at Debenhams

Posted in Fashion.

By the time you read this I’ll be landing at Chicago O’Hare Airport – aaaah scheduling, how I adore you!

We’ve reached challenge 21 of Project Take 10 and this time we teamed up with H! By Henry Holland at Debenhams. We had a choice of two very different items – a 90s-style sheer polka dot maxi skirt or a vintage-look yellow kite print dress. For some bizarre reason I decided to push my fashion boundaries and opted for the skirt. Hhmmm.

I don’t dislike the skirt – it’d look great on an art school whippet, styled with a grunge edge and chunky boots. Sadly, I just can’t pull it off. Which is why you only get a teeny tiny photo of my outfit, alongside my gorgeous Take 10 counterparts…

What do you think? Would you choose the dress or the skirt? And how would you style them?

How To Wear American Apparel Disco Pants

Posted in Daily Outfits, Fashion.

A few weeks ago the lovely people at Republic sent me a pair of American Apparel Disco Pants. American Apparel is a new addition to the Republic website and to celebrate, they asked three bloggers to take part in a Disco Pant Style Challenge! I’ll have more on that in another post, but for now I thought I’d write a bit about wearing these Grease-esque blogger faves.

When they first started appearing on style blogs, I gave a derisive snort at the thought of ever getting my ass into a pair of Disco Pants. I mean, look at them! Skintight, high-waisted, super shiny… they look like instruments of torture for size 12+ figures. But actually…

Sadly some of my outfit shots corrupted when uploading but you get the idea. I wear these babies all.the.time. I cannot get enough. Firstly, they are insanely comfortable. They’re nice and stretchy without digging in, making them perfect for lounging about the house (which, let’s face it, happens a lot). Secondly, they are surprisingly flattering. You’d think, given they’re made from high-shine nylon with a waistband that sits above the bellybutton and a spray-on fit, that they’d highlight all your lumps and bumps and create an unforgivable camel toe situation – but no! The thick, heavy material acts like a pair of Spanx for your lower half, smoothing out wobbly bits and creating a streamlined look that’s quite slimming.

I found the Disco Pants to be a little on the small side, so I sized up and went for a large. My only slight niggle is they gape a little bit around the waist but that can be forgiven, especially after a big meal.

I’ve worn them with everything from cropped jumpers to long shirts to tucked in tees, but this is one of my favourite looks. The oversized denim shirt is also by American Apparel – it’s a size small from their men’s range which makes it that little bit longer. Underneath is a pale blue scallop hem vest from Topshop, which is slightly cropped and tucked in at the front. Then I just slip on flats and some jewellery and I’m done. I’ll be wearing something very similar for my 8.5 hour flight to Chicago TOMORROW!

Would you wear American Apparel Disco Pants? How would you style them?

Life through my Instagram lens…

instagram blog post

I’m in a book! When this popped through my letterbox I was so excited to see myself in print, I snapped it straightaway. Then I wrote a whole post about it. It was such a great experience and the book itself is fascinating. You can download your own copy here.

Lovely Cat from Take Courage sent me this cute tote and I’ve been, um, toting my stuff around in it ever since. It’s the perfect size for Primark purchases, my gym kit or a few car boot sale finds. Buy yours here.

I’m sure cats are the key to Instagram fame. Travis is the true star of my feed! Both these photos were taken by my other half Rob, who then texted them to me with tales of terrible naughtiness and extreme cuteness. I had to Instagram them both because he’s just too damn adorable. Naawwwww.

Food photography is so hard to get right, but there’s something about an Instagram filter that makes everything look delicious. On the left we have a chicken katsu salad, bought in Wasabi and eaten in Pret because their seats are comfier and their wifi is free. It was one of the tastiest lunches I’ve had in ages… please come to Leeds, Wasabi!

On the right is a full English breakfast, eaten in 10 minutes flat after a night out in Nottingham with my friend Clare. Much needed after white wine, gin, vodka and shots. Oh dear.

I’ve been searching for the perfect bikini for a literal age, so was delighted to find this beauty from Ted Baker at ASOS. No one needs to see my stomach so high-waisted pants are a necessity, and I will never get away with a triangle top so there must be some form of underwire. Although expensive at £45 for the pants and £39 for the top (gulp!), I really think this is one area worth investing. One tip – size up on the pants. They’re quite small!

My current favourite nail polish is Hedonist by Models Own. It’s part of their Hed Kandi range but don’t let that put you off – there’s no 90s trance here. Hedonist is a gorgeous neon coral, so much brighter than I could capture on camera. The stacked rings are Topshop and the scarf I’m resting my hand on (so much nicer than my desk!) is Zara.

Curly hair! I wrote about my joy at finally being able to achieve loose curls here. All praise the Remington Pearl Curling Wand!

I was sent a pair of Disco Pants by the lovely folks at Republic as part of a blogger style challenge (more on that next week) and they’ve barely been off my backside since. I. Love. Them. They’re bizarrely flattering and seem to work with everything in my wardrobe. Here I wore them with a Topshop blouse and cardigan and Ara flats c/o Sarenza.

After my trip to Paris with Cointreau I was sent this amazing limited edition bottle of the liquor, designed by Alexis Mabille who also created the Cointreau Paris lounge. I love those little bows! And obviously the alcohol will be put to good use.

Finally, some ice cream. Haagen-Dazs asked if I’d like to try their new Mint Leaves and Chocolate flavour. Clearly they hadn’t heard I’m on a holiday diet and I didn’t bother telling them. I absolutely LOVE mint ice cream and this is a dream – so fresh and light but creamy too, with big, satisfying chunks of dark chocolate. Just don’t think about the aforementioned bikini when eating it!

So that’s me… what have you been up to lately?
