The Blog Issue – Your Career

Rather fittingly for today’s Blog Issue, these photos are professional shots taken for an article in a trade magazine about that thing I like to call ‘my day job’.

Like most bloggers, I work 9-5.30 (and very often outside those hours too). I went to uni, studied hard to get my degree, did unpaid work, got my first proper job and was already on the second rung of that clichéd ladder by the time I started writing about clothes and thrifting and stuff. As my blog started to grow, my career took off too and I found myself forced to consider what comes first… the career or the blog?

I’m a pretty ambitious person and I have that desire to succeed in everything I do. I’m not about the half-hearted. I believe if you want something you have to make it happen, and making something happen means dedicating yourself to it. Giving it 100%. The whole hog. Everything you’ve got. So what happens if there are two passions vying for your attention? Can you be successful at both, even if you can only physically give 50% to each?

I often find myself making choices. I choose to give up my Sundays so I can write blog posts, catch up with my community and answer my emails. I choose to get up earlier than necessarily so I can troop outside at 7.30am, tripod under arm, to take my daily photos. I choose to dedicate lunchbreaks to research and content planning. But I also choose to not post some days. I choose to take a blog break when I’m working to a client deadline. I choose to sleep, rather than write, after a 12 hour day (of writing).

I hope that one day, blogging will be synonymous with my career. But until I get there, I’ll continue to stretch myself. I’ll keep making choices and hopefully, both will flourish. It’ll be hard work but that’s okay, because hard work always pays. Didn’t your mother ever tell you that?

Do you find yourself forced to choose between your blog and your job? Is it a hard choice to make? How do you split your time between the two?

This Is England

Merc cardigan, Topshop jeans, Topshop blouse via charity shop, Topshop ring, Primark pumps

I’m a huge cardigan fan. I love them. My wardrobe is groaning under the weight of all that wool. So when the folks at Merc offered to send me something from their website, I went straight for the Maria cardigan. What else?

I wasn’t familar with Merc until their lovely PR person Rebecca got in touch. She described the range as very ‘This Is England’, and I definitely agree with her. This black and white cardigan has a real 80s mod feel to it, especially when paired with a cute Peter Pan collar blouse. I could’ve gone the whole hog and added chunky DMs and a Lol-style quiff, but I think the patent pumps are more my thing.

What do you think? Do you like that 80s androgynous look (all stone washed denim, plaid shirts and unflattering shoes), or are you more of a fur and florals kinda gal? Do tell.

As Inspired By… Magpie Girl

Zara dress and cardigan, vintage faux fur coat, Topshop tights, Primark brogues, belt and bunny ring

Magpie Girl is one of my favourite blogs – I think I’m slightly obsessed with the lovely Vicki’s luscious red hair and her bright green glasses. A girl after my own heart! When I saw this post I knew Vicki’s outfit would feature in the As Inspired By… series.

I’m sure fully-fledged Fashionistas will wag their fingers (painted in this season’s mushroom, natch) at me for admitting this, but I don’t have a separate winter wardrobe. All my clothes are in constant rotation – when the temperature drops, I add layers, scarves and socks. I swap sandals for boots, of course, but never physically pack things away. Just like Vicki, those sundresses I wore with bare skin and painted toenails are reinvented with tights and chunky knits for the colder weather.

This Zara dress has been a year-round staple of mine for a long time. Adding thick tights and faux fur makes it seasonally appropriate and toasty warm, too. The bunny is a near-constant companion of mine these days – he’s just so cute.

Who’s inspiring you today?

Some Saturday Shares

A few days ago the lovely folks at Matalan kindly sent me their Christmas lookbook to have a nosy through. Matalan’s not a store I often visit, mainly because there isn’t one in central Leeds. I adore their home range and after my flick through the new collections, I’m pretty sold on the clothes too!

… And PJs!

I’ll definitely be taking a trip to my nearest store to stock up on seasonal essentials.

Ever generous, Matalan also sent me a preview of their new TV ad to share with you guys… their CHRISTMAS TV ad!

I’m not listening to your cries of ‘but it’s only November 6th! Are you crazy?!’. I love Christmas, and I love that ad agencies across the country put in extra special effort and even more creative genius to make the advertising we see over the season so wonderful. Matalan’s has everything I’m looking for in a Christmas ad – sparkle, fairy lights, smiling people and a catchy tune.

Look out for the premiere in one of X Factor’s (many, many) ad breaks tonight. Happy weekend!

PS – The lovely Beth‘s boyfriend is taking part in Movember this month. A few of my friends did it last year and it’s a great way to raise money and awareness. Persuade your boyfriend/brother/GBF (Gay Best Friend) to grow a moustache (which should be easy… they seem to have a weird fascination with facial hair! Maybe it’s the Ron Burgundy thing?) and help the cause.

The Six Piece Wardrobe Style Challenge – Day Five, The Finale!

Posted in Daily Outfits.

So here we are – the end. Well, kind of. I do realise that five days does not a full week make, but the weekend is a sacred time, reserved for slouching about in nothing more than jeans and a jumper. So there.

I’ve really enjoyed my challenge, but I seriously cannot wait to regain full use of my wardrobe! Having such a small sample of clothing has been tough, especially when I’m faced with racks of patterns, prints, styles and shapes every morning. But doing this has made me realise how much surplus stock I have in my over-stuffed space. This weekend will definitely be dedicated to a closet clear-out!

Do you have a favourite look of the challenge? Here’s a refresher of the week’s outfits – Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

PS – Oh yeah, I’ve had a radical hair make over. No biggie!

I had my hair chopped and changed at Cutting Room Creative in Chapel Allerton and I’m delighted with the results! I posted a sneaky Twitpic on Twitter last night and received the most wonderful replies from my Twit family, who compared me (quite insanely, I feel) to Mia Farrow, Audrey Hepburn, Natalie Portman, Emma Watson and Ginnifer Goodwin (my original hairspiration). They’ve clearly taken leave of their senses, but how grateful I am for their kind words.

The hair is perfectly timed as tonight I’m shimmying on down (or up, rather) to Leeds’s Sky Lounge for a night of fire-themed celebration with the darling Aussie girls and my fellow Angels. I’ll be debuting the hair and have a quick question for you – shall I spike it up or smooth it down? Leave your answers below!
