What I Wore For… a client meeting

Client meetings are new territory for me. As a mid-level creative in a large advertising agency, I very rarely left my desk (which wasn’t always a bad thing… my shiny iMac sat on my desk. Oh I miss it so!). I never had to think about dressing smartly – I think I could’ve rocked up in my PJs and I’d have fitted right in amongst baggy jeans, flat caps and ironic t-shirts. Yes, the wardrobe of an Ad (wo)Man rarely calls for a suit and tie.

In my new capacity as Online Community Manager, I get to go out in the big, wide world. Last week I was in London to meet a client (in some very cool offices in Brixton, complete with office pug who was missing an eye. Only in advertising…). I stood in front of my wardrobe the night before and looked at my floral dresses, skinny jeans and cosy cardigans in despair. I wanted to look smart but cool. Laidback but edgy. Creative but professional, and even more pairs of adjectives.

I eventually plumped for casual chinos and pumps, dressed up with a crisp white shirt and made ‘London’ with a trilby and quirky jewellery. And I felt right at home storming through Brixton tube station, Macbook under one arm and iPod headphones firmly in my ears.*

*Disclaimer – I promise I’m not a fucking hipster or one of these dickheads.

eve Fashion Swaps

Posted in Blogging, Fashion.

Most of you will know I live in the north, Leeds, to be exact. I love my city – it’s vibrant, friendly and has some fantastic, award-winning creative talent. For anyone interested in fashion (aside from shopping) however, the north has serious drawbacks.

Almost all major fashion brands are based in London. There are a few flying the flag up here – Republic is in Leeds, Rare is Liverpool-based, Boo Hoo is in Manchester and our homegrown haute couture label Aqua is proud of its Leeds heritage. But high street favourites, famous labels and fashion week remain resolutely down south. It’s enough to make a northern gal stamp her Loboutin-clad feet.

That’s why when the folks at eve contacted me about their Fashion Swap events, I was more than happy to give them a shout out… because they’re both past the Watford Gap! Hooray!

eve’s Fashion Swaps are happening on Wednesday 15th September (tomorrow!) from 6pm at Dukes 92, Castlefield, Machester, and Thursday 23rd September at PanAm, Albert Docks, Liverpool. All you stylish northern folk have to do is take along one unwanted, good quality piece of clothing and you’ll get to walk out with something completely new to you! Everyone wins!

The events are hosted by the fabulously lovely Louise Redknapp and as well as all the fun clothes-swapping business, you’ll get style advice and mini manicures. Did I mention it’s all free, too?

If your wardrobe needs a refresh, you’re stuck in a style rut or you just want to experience some of the fashion fun those London folk enjoy on a regular basis, you’ll need to book a ticket. Just text ‘eve Liverpool’ or ‘eve Manchester’ to 82500 and you’ll be sent a unique code to your phone that you’ll need to show on the door.

I’m hoping I can make it to the Liverpool event – let me know if you’re going and if you spot me make sure you come say hello!

As Inspired By… Gem Fatale

Posted in Blogging, Daily Outfits.

The lovely Gem Fatale is one of my very favourite bloggers. Her kooky, girly style, her charity shop finds and fabulous Tuesday Tips (seriously – do you know how to stop your fringe going gappy? Gem does!) make her the perfect inspiration for today’s As Inspired By… post. I’m a particular fan of Gem’s socks with brogues combos, so decided to give them a go.

The lovely folk at very.co.uk sent me this adorable polka dot dress, which I teamed with cute white ankle socks, my trusty brogues and some kitsch accessories.

Do you think I captured Gem’s style or does the look need some work? What do you think of the shoes and socks combo?

Sunday Smile #21 – Accessorize AW10

Posted in Daily Outfits, Fashion.

You all know I like a good accessory. Nay, love a good accessory. A statement necklace, blingy ring or perfectly-tied scarf can transform an outfit from basic to beautiful. So when the lovely folk at Accessorize asked if I’d like to review some items from their AW10 collection, I said “hell yes”!

I decided to put Accessorize to the test and create three completely different looks using the pretty pieces they sent me.

The flat boots and a chunky knit are functional AW pieces, while the scarf adds a pop of colour and the owl ring brings the cute!

Aren’t these bags just to die for? I simply couldn’t choose between the two, so used them both. And the finger candy just seals the deal.

There were a two pieces that didn’t fit into my outfits but are still more than blog-worthy…

Printed scarf (not yet on website)

This easy-wearing scarf is perfect for throwing on with jeans to add detail and interest to something simple.

Ophelia Jacquard Oversized Clutch, £28

Jacquard is a key trend for AW10 and I love this girly version. It’s big, bold and beautiful – great teamed with an LDB for a special night out.

I loved every single thing Accessorize sent and wish I could keep it all! The brand has always been a favourite of mine, especially for those detailed pieces that make an outfit sing. I now have a wishlist as long as my arm and will be hotfooting it to my nearest store to stock up for the new season. Thanks, Accessorize!

Are you an Accessorize fan? Do you have a favourite from the website? How do you use accessories to chop and change things from your wardrobe?

What I Wore For… a wedding

Posted in Daily Outfits.

A new regular (ish) feature on A Little Bird! As Wardrobe Wonderings is on a hiatus (back soon, folks) I thought I’d delve into those hard-to-dress-for occasions I seem to attend on a regular basis (weddings, festivals, job interviews, client meetings, smart-casual nights out, blogger events…), and first up is the wedding.

The Mr and I were invited along to a lovely night do for an old colleague’s wedding. I wanted to buy a new dress, but not a whole new outfit. I wanted something simple and chic I could dress up with accessories. And I had 10 minutes with a grumpy Mr in tow to find it. Hardly retail therapy.

H&M dress, Oasis wedges, Accessorize ring and clutch

This dress reminds me of Carrie’s naked dress and was £24.99 from H&M, while the ring and clutch are sneak peeks from Accessorize‘s AW10 collection – more on that later this week.

I wanted to do something different with my hair – have you noticed I never, EVER do anything with my hair other than what it does naturally? I’m a total hair bore. But I felt inspired by my lovely friend Kel’s blog, Hair Advice and All Things Nice, and decided to try an up-do. I finished the look with a slick of Prestige liquid liner in black and Barry M’s Grey on my nails.

Have you been to any weddings or formal events this summer? What did you wear?
