Project Take 10 Challenge 1

Posted in Daily Outfits.

A few weeks ago, Project Take 10 was revealed – we’re a group of 10 fashion bloggers with individual styles, working the same piece in ten totally different ways. And here’s our first challenge!

Our first sponsor is Dorothy Perkins, who very kindly set us up for our challenge with this fab lace waistcoat. Now, this isn’t something you’d normally find in my wardrobe, so styling it was a challenge indeed! Here’s how I did it…

I kept the rest of the outfit simple so the waistcoat was the focus. I like the pairing of lace and sheer fabrics – it softens the dark denim and fierce buckled shoes! Take a look at how the other girls got on…

Leia from Leia’s Delights
Vicki from Magpie Girl
Adele from Molto Curiosa
Saskia from Not Just Medical
Shini from Park and Cube
Sabine from Psynopsis
Sarah from We Shop Therefore We Are

Don’t they all look fab? I love all the different takes and how we’ve interpreted the style of the waistcoat – some going for a smart, dressed-up look and others keeping it cool and casual.

What do you think, lovely followers? Would you dress up or dress down for this challenge? And are you looking forward to the next? I am! Come follow us on Twitter or like our Facebook page to get all the latest news from the Take 10 Girls.

Big thanks to the lovely folks at Dorothy Perkins – what a great first sponsor!

Sunday Smile #17

Posted in Daily Outfits, Home.

Evening friends! I’m a little late with this week’s Sunday Smile – apologies. I’ve been running riot in a corn ma(i)ze today! Tomorrow is my lovely mum’s birthday, and we always do something fun and summery to celebrate it. We headed to York Maze in Elvington (just outside York) to get lost in the corn, soak up the sun and pet the pigs. Here are a few pictures…

I wore new trousers from Zara, an H&M top, thrifted bag, Zara Taylor necklace (I wear this all the time – think I’m obsessed!) and New Look sandals.

It was such a lovely day – if you’re in the Yorkshire area and want something to do on a sunny afternoon, it’s definitely worth the visit. And if you time it right, you’ll catch the pig race (which was quite odd, but fun nonetheless)!

I start my new job tomorrow and I’m feeling excited and nervous. I’ve got my outfit all sorted, but that post will have to wait ’til Tuesday, because the first Project Take 10 challenge kicks off tomorrow! Make sure you’re here at 5.30pm to see how the girls and I got on. I must admit – it was a tricky one!

Anything making your smile this Sunday? Or have the Sunday Night Blues hit already? Do tell.

The Transition

I recently announced on Twitter that I’ve officially given up on summer and am welcoming autumn with open arms. Now, that doesn’t mean I’m looking forward to months of grey skies, bitter winds and flat hair – no, dear followers. I’m not sadist. What I simply cannot wait for is the end to our constant quest for sunshine.

In autumn, I can wear tights and hats and scarves! All the pieces I want to wear now but can’t because it’s summer and wearing tights in summer is just plain ridiculous, even if your legs are turning blue because it’s only 18 degrees out there. Hmph.

So, until we’re hit with the cool air of autumn, I’ll be wearing this fabulous sheer shirt from H&M. It’s the perfect transitional piece – airy enough to wear with summer’s flippy sundresses but in that rich khaki shade I always associate with autumn. Sorry, chunky knit cardi – you’ll have to wait ’til September.

Are you ready for autumn or clinging on to summer? Have you started building your AW wardrobe yet? What will you be buying?

Silk for Less

Clothing at Tesco silk trousers, H&M tee, Primark, Topshop pumps, Zara Taylor timepiece necklace

Can you guess the price of these 100% silk drawstring trousers? I think they look like a £60 pair from Reiss or Cos, with their simple detailing and lux fabric. But they’re not. They were £15 from
Clothing at Tesco and I just adore them. Apart from being so easy to style and perfect for the summer-to-autumn transition, they feel like PJs. I could quite happily climb into bed with them on… although they’re far too lovely to be covered by the duvet!

Do you have an item in your wardrobe that looks far more expensive than it actually was? A thrifted bargain, sale scoop or high street copy that draws gasps of surprise when you reveal the price?

The Blog Issue – Promotion

Posted in Blogging, Daily Outfits.

This is the second post in my Blog Issue series. You can read the first, on blogger jealousy, here.

Let’s kick off with a quick outfit post…

If you’re a regular reader of my blog, you’ll know I sometimes wear items that have been sent to me by brands. Accepting freebies (or ‘gifting’, as the US bloggers call it) is commonplace amongst fashion and beauty bloggers, but it can be a dangerous game. How do you remain true to your readers whilst adhering to a contract with a brand? If you’re receiving payment (whether in money or material) for a post, can you ever be truly unbiased?

In recent years, blogs have become fully fledged marketing platforms. Just like magazines before them, bloggers have a loyal and dedicated readership, who trust their word and (sometimes) act upon it. Brands are cottoning on quickly, and that means we see more and more sponsored posts, gifted outfits and blog advertisements. Some brands handpick their bloggers by taking the time to read and understand individual blogs that represent their ethos, but others prefer a blanket approach – I recently agreed to a promotional post only to find the same company had contacted a huge amount of bloggers, which led to said promo posts popping up everywhere. Can 30 different bloggers, with different interests, styles and personalities all really think the same thing?

I found this article absolutely key when thinking about the credibility of my blog. My opinion is that you cannot ever be truly impartial when writing about something if your discussion is being incentivised, which undoubtable affects the credibility of your stance. So how do you ensure you remain authentic?

Genuine passion is terribly hard to fake (just ask any copywriter who’s written a direct mail piece for a financial services client), so if you’re not keen on the brand or the product, don’t do it. If you’ve seen the same post on 20 different blogs already, don’t do it. And if you’ve already promoted 3 different brands this week, don’t do it.

Many of my favourite blogs are ad free and completely awesome. And many more of my favourite blogs have sponsors and advertisers. The similarity is, every single one produces original, unique and interesting content. They all offer me something different, something that’s truly their own, whether their post is promoting or simply pondering. And that’s the key to retaining your credibility – being yourself.

How do you feel about bloggers who accept freebies or display advertising? As a reader, does a sponsored post intrigue or insult you? As a blogger, are you (or would you) be comfortable accepting a gift from a brand in return for a review? Share your thoughts below.
