Hello, I’m a fashion blogger

Primark dress, New Look plimsols, French Connection necklace, Cherry and Joy ring

I don’t often wear silver jewellery. It always seems like the more conventional choice, and that burnished, coppery gold has such a vintage appeal. I won this ring in Cherry and Joy‘s Twitter competition and I love its imperfections – it reminds me silver can be cool too. Lovely stuff.

After reading an interesting and intelligent post about fashion blogging, I got to thinking (oh, Ms. Bradshaw. Even though the second film was dire, your colloquialisms live on) about the people behind the blogs. As I said in my comment on that post, my blog is a kind of escapism. Lots of my time is spent writing about mortgages, degrees and 50% off deals (I wonder if you can guess a few of my my clients from that little snippet?). When I settle myself down to write my blog posts, I’m only looking to inspire conversation. I want to engage people, indeed. But I want to be accessible. I want to make you, dear reader, smile.

Much of fashion blogging is frivolous. Of course, fashion is an art form, a cultural phenomena, an important and relevant part of our economy and society. But it’s also a way of connecting with other people. It’s a shared interest, a divided passion, a style collective. And that’s why I blog.

Why do you blog? If you’re a fashion blogger, are you interested in clothing as an art form, or is it more about sharing your love of style with other likeminded folk? And if you’re a different kind of blogger, what inspires you to post? When you write, what do you want to achieve, if anything?

PS – There’s a very special treat waiting for all Little Bird readers over at Max C London today – do let me know what you go for!

Wardrobe Wonderings

Posted in Daily Outfits, Second Hand Shopping.

This week’s Wardrobe Wonderings comes from a girl after my own heart – she’s on a budget! If you’re a regular reader of A Little Bird you’ll know I try to keep my stylish spending to a minimum by hunting down bargains and thrifting my way through trends. I knew I’d have lots to say about this…

“I don’t have a large budget to spend on clothing. Could you suggest something cheap and cheerful?”

Thrifted dress, 50p, Primark cardigan, £5, H&M belt, £5, New Look shoes, £10, thrifted brooch, £1, Primark ring, £1, thrifted bag, £2

Total outfit cost – £24.50

Cute, cheerful and totally cheap! I don’t believe in spending huge amounts of money on everyday clothing. If it’s something special, go ahead and invest (I’m thinking your wedding dress, Jimmy Choos, an Alexa bag…actually, anyone want to invest in my wardrobe? Well, it’s a more sensible choice than oil and banking!). But looking fab for the 9 to 5 shouldn’t cost a whole month’s wages. Here are my tips for being stylish without being a spendthrift…

  • Go secondhand. Yep, you’ve heard it all before, but car boot sales, charity shops and eBay are your thrifty friends. My top things to look out for are floral dresses, bags and jackets. Don’t be afraid to buy out of season and put things away – I picked up a faux fur leopard print jacket at the weekend, which is waiting patiently in my wardrobe ’til October!
  • Check out the cheapies. My favourites are Clothing at Tesco, Peacocks, Matalan and, of course, Primark. Look for natural fibres (cotton, silk and wool can all be found at purse-friendly prices) and check for missing buttons, hanging threads and pulled seams before you buy
  • Share and share alike. Go raid some wardrobes. Oversized shirts nabbed from your boyfriend’s half (okay, eighth) of the wardrobe look great with denim shorts and a skinny vest. Your mum might be hoarding vintage treats, and a friend might just have a bag that goes perfectly with that dress you’re wearing on Friday night. Just remember to repay the favour… although your boyfriend might prefer something other than an invitation to your shoe collection.
  • DIY. Before you start panicking, I’m not suggesting Gok-style butchery (sorry, enhancement), nor do I expect you to whip up a LBD from a binbag, a length of string and an old pair of tights. Start simple – make your own jewels, fashion a brooch from felt, rework something old and tired into something shiny and new. Give it a go!

I could go on and on about this particular closet conundrum – it’s something I deal with all the time as a girl on a budget with delusions of grandeur. I’m sure you all have lots of tips of your own, so I’ll pass it over to you – how do you stretch your style budget? Any shop recommendations, tricks or secrets to share? What’s your fashionable fiscal policy? Wow us with your wisdom!

And of course, I now need YOU for Wardrobe Wonderings – the results. I’d like to see your overdraft-busting outfits, your cheap creations and your money-saving style. Email me your photos and tell me the individual cost of each item you’re wearing, along with the total and a link to your blog before Tues 29th. I’ll post them all up next week and you’ll get your own feature on A Little Bird, just like these lovely ladies!

Even more proof that size really doesn’t matter

Thrifted skirt, Gap tee, Primark brogues, belt and ring

A few months ago I wrote about two pieces I bought from my favourite charity shop. A size 20 kaftan and a size 8 skirt, both of which fitted perfectly. Today, I’m wearing another thrifted skirt. Funnily, just like the size 8 one I wear all the time, it’s by Topshop. And it’s a size 16.

Now, how does that work? Granted, the two skirts are different styles, but surely the simple principles of measurement still apply?

As soon as I saw this floral fancy on the rail, I snapped it up. The size on the label doesn’t really matter to me, and for just £2 I couldn’t refuse. But I don’t think I’d pay £30+ for something so badly fitting.

What do you think? Do you have issues with sizing in any high street shops? Does it bother you, or would you rather go up/down a size to ensure the perfect fit? I’d love to know!

PS – Have you entered my Max C London giveaway yet? No? You know what to do!

A health and safety warning…

Before viewing the following images, I’m obliged to tell you I’m wearing leggings. If you’re repulsed by the very thought, please navigate away from this page immediately. Come back tomorrow when I won’t be wearing leggings. Thank you.

Funk Rock Nicola Tunic, Topshop leggings, Urban Outfitters cardigan, Eclectic Eccentricity bracelet, Zara Taylor Ornate Dahlia Flower Ring

Okay, okay. I’m being dramatic. You don’t really need a health and safety briefing before seeing me in leggings.

Leggings get a bad rap. Never has such a humble item of clothing been so badly abused by so many. But they’re actually really useful, especially if you’re a tall gal like me. This adorable floral tunic was sent to me by my lovely sponsors Funk Rock. It’s a tad too short for bare legs, but tights felt too heavy for the glorious sunshine that’s finally gracing us with its presence. I usually only wear these extra long Topshop leggings around the house, but they were perfect for pairing with this pretty number. So I’m won over. Leggings, welcome to my ‘real life’ wardrobe. Jeggings, however… well, they’re a different story entirely.

What do you think of leggings/jeggings/treggings (I believe the latter are trouser leggings… although how they differ from plain old leggings I don’t know. If anyone can enlighten me, please do!)? Couldn’t-live-without-them wardrobe basics or oh-God-no-my-eyes fashion disaster? Do tell.

PS – If you haven’t already, go have a peep at Funk Rock. Lots of pretty, pretty things on there and free delivery if you spend over £25! Lovely stuff.

PPS – It’s giveaway time again here at Little Bird (how I spoil you!) – have you entered yet?

Wardrobe Wonderings – the results

Posted in Fashion.

Last week’s Wardrobe Wonderings was all about festival dressing and how to keep your fashion cool while contending with mud, excessive cider consumption and all manner of unpleasant situations. A tall order, I know. But I was confident my fabulously fashionable followers could pull it off, and I was right! Just look at these gorgeous gals…

Sarah from We Shop Therefore We Are
Sarah’s amazing Topshop cape adds a touch of bling to her festival outfit. The leather boots are a classic twist too!

Photobucket
Hannah from Bow Dream Nation
This is Hannah at Glasto last year – I just adore the sunflower pinned to her hat and that fab pink hair!

Photobucket
Emma from The Stones Inside My Shoes
Emma wore this gorgeous get-up to the Isle of Wight Festival last weekend. She has legwarmers on to stop her wellies rubbing – top tip!

Photobucket
Lou from Crafty and Quirky
Lou’s pretty sequin waistcoat was just £1 from a car boot – now that’s my kinda bargain! Love the knee high socks too.

Photobucket
Clare from Rainbows and Fairy Dust
A super-girly look from Clare. Loving the pretty florals, tough boots and her adorable dog!

Photobucket
Alex from Odd Socks and Pretty Frocks
The wonderful Alex gets extra points for use of props – can you spot her oh-so authentic bottle of cider? That cute straw hat is perfect for keeping the sun at bay.

Another successful Wardrobe Wonderings – high fives all round, I think! Don’t the girls look great? They’re all ready for festival season. What about you? Will I bump into you at Leeds Festival or are you heading elsewhere?

There’s still plenty of time to submit your questions for next week’s Wardrobe Wonderings, and the results post will follow the week after. I hope you’re enjoying this regular feature, because I love it!
