Sunday Smile #4

Posted in Second Hand Shopping.

I’ve got lots to smile about this thrifty Sunday – it’s officially car boot season, and that means early rises, bacon sandwiches and bargains galore! Take a look what I scooped over the weekend…

My oh my, what a haul! I have to say, I’m pretty pleased with myself. So what do we have here then?

Well, the Zara mac was a little more than I wanted to spend, and I already have a cream mac in my wardrobe, but it’s so beautifully made and fits like a dream… I couldn’t leave it behind! And I couldn’t believe my ears when the curly haired blonde behind one stall said ‘you can have that for 20p if you like’ as I pawed the Cath Kidston wash bag. It’s perfect for lugging my favourite ‘essentials’ (read – 5 different nail varnishes and copious amounts of blusher) across the world… or at least across Yorkshire.

The brush and bowl are welcome additions to my already-groaning dressing table. I’m in total and utter love with the brush. I think it’s sterling silver but even if not, it’s perfectly pretty. And the dresses will fit right in to my collection – the New Look swallow print dress looks rather similar to one of their current designs so I think it’s new season. The Charlotte Halton is a beautifully flattering shape but will need hemming… they’re both hanging on my makeshift washing line to air.

So that’s me done for the week – it was definitely worth seeing 7am on a Sunday! Are you a fellow booter? Did you find yourself standing in a field at some ungodly hour over the weekend? And if so, what did you find? I’d love to know!

Northern Soul

As I’m sure you all know, I’m a Northern girl through and through. I was born and raised in North Yorkshire and now live in Leeds. Other than my fantasy life in New York (it’ll happen some day!), I can’t imagine living anywhere else.

The perception of Northern style often makes me stomp my feet and shake my head. The lovely Helen of Afeitar recently shared her anger at the portrayal of Scouse style at the Grand National – those Liverpudlian lasses are much more than Juicy tracksuits and bad fake tan.

Although many, many fashion bloggers are stylish Southern belles, there’s a growing community of Northern folk taking to the keys and preening their fashionable feathers. Some of my favourites are MJ from Dreaming Spires and Old Car Tyres, who studies in Oxford but hails from Hull; Kavita from I Heart Vintage, who’s a fellow Yorkshire girl; Aydan from Little Blog of Horrors, who kicks it in Scotland; Vicki from Magpie Girl, who wears those killer specs all over Northern Ireland; and my blogger bestie, Victoria from Lily Loves Lola who lives in Leeds.

As well as the bloggers themselves, there are some amazing blogging communities and projects based anywhere North of Watford (I joke) – like British Style Bloggers, which is run by two lovely ladies from York and Newcastle respectively, and my most bookmarked blog of the moment – Fashion Looks North. Run by Lauren and covering cities across the North, Fashion Looks North captures stunning style moments and shares them with the world.

If you’re a Northern blogger – whether you’re born and bred or just visiting – and you’d quite fancy meeting some likeminded people, tweet Rachel from BSB and let her know you’re interested.

So gang – what do you think? Where do you hail from? The North, the South, the middle bit? And do Essex girls really wear white stilettos*? I’d love to know!

*Tsk – of course they don’t.

Well, if I’d known I would become the face of ASOS Life today (pushing it a bit, I know), I’d have worn something with a little more wow! As it turns out, I’m rocking that off duty model look Tyra Banks is always going on about. Heh heh.

Yes, dearest followers – today is a rather pivotal moment in the history of A Little Bird, because today I have my very own feature on ASOS Life. And I made the front page! How cool!!

Huge thank yous to all the fabulous folk at ASOS – I’m utterly flattered you deemed my little corner of the internet worthy of a spot amongst your hallowed pages.

Please go have a peep and tell me your thoughts. I’m considering using the phrase ‘I won’t get out of bed for less than $10,000 a day’ from now on – can I get away with it? 😉

Find it, work it – floral dresses

Thrifted dress, mytights.com tights, Chockers boots, Zara cardigan, Primark belt, Primark ring

I’m hoping these Find it, work it posts can become a regular thing here at A Little Bird. Every so often, I go on the hunt for something specific – that perfect piece of style gold that slides effortlessly into my wardrobe and mixes with everything in there. For the first Find it, work it post, it’s this 100% silk floral dress.

My magpie eye spotted it amongst polyester smocks in a charity shop at the weekend, and of course it was love at first sight. The fluttering, flattering shape, oh-so-soft fabric and gloriously girly print had me grabbing like an eager child.

The best thing about this dress is how easy it was to style up. The colour palette coordinates perfectly with so many things I already own, so I knew I’d be able to work the look straight away. I added my much-loved Chockers boots, a simple Zara cardigan I’ve had for eons and these heavenly hyacinth tights from mytights.com. Done and dusted!

What have you found recently? And how did you work it? I’d love to know!

PS – Aren’t cherry blossoms just so beautiful? I adore them.

Daffodils along the city walls

York is my favourite city in the UK. I grew up just 20 minutes away and have visited hundreds of times, but I’ll never get bored of the architecture, the atmosphere or the elegance. The shopping is wonderful too – a huge Topshop, plenty of tiny boutiques, Wild Hart (the most heavenly homeware shop) and of course, Cath Kidston.

On Saturday, we made one of our regular trips to our favourite city and strolled around like tourists, taking in the sights and sounds. We bought a hotdog from a street seller (a PROPER hotdog, none of this reconstituted stuff), nipped in and out of charity shops (The Salvation Army is my favourite) and people-watched from the grass in the Museum Gardens.

When we finally get around to planning it, I’d like to get married in York. One of my strongest memories is of Mr and I, tentatively taking the bus to the city, bumping hands and blushing on our very first date.

Do you have a favourite city, or are you a country girl at heart? What’s the one place you could visit time and time again? I’d love to know!
