It’s just puppy fat…

Well… you lot are a bunch of nosy parkers, aren’t you? 🙂

Yesterday I got lots of lovely compliments and queries from people, via comment and email. There was one thing in particular many of you were dying to know – have I lost weight?

And the simple answer is – no! I’m not one for dieting, exercising or bothering about my weight in general. I don’t own a pair of scales – if my zips are struggling and my buttons straining, I know it’s time to cut out those midnight Nutella fingers. I’ve never been super slim but nor am I overweight – just a happy in between. I think the difference yesterday was what I wore. Long line vests, skinny jeans, heels and something loose over the top is a silhouette that really works for me. I reach for this tried and tested fashion favourite whenever I’m having a fat day, feeling uninspired or down in the dumps.

There were two other questions that cropped up yesterday too… one was what blusher do I use (Bourjois little pots in Rose D’or) and the other I’m avoiding. I’m shifting my eyes and shuffling my feet. Let’s talk about something else! The state of the economy? The weather? No?! Okay…

“I don’t recognise that waistcoat… have you fallen off the wagon?”

Yeah, thanks very much Vix – busted!

Last week, I slammed my wardrobe shut in despair and wailed to the Mr ‘I have absolutely nothing to wear!’. I was going out with some old work colleagues and wanted to look a little bit edgy and cool. Honestly, dear followers – nothing fitted the bill. Floral teadress with tough boots? Done to death. Jeans and tee with blazer? Bored of it. I stropped about a bit and eventually made the decision to spend £10 of my PayPal balance in Primark (where else could I get an outfit for less than a tenner?) to solve my fashion quandary.

In the end, I bought the lace waistcoat you saw yesterday, along with a peach and polka dot tee and a pinky flower ring. I wore them with black skinny jeans and my black brogues and felt fantastic! And such a small spend means that I class my indulgence as nothing more than puppy fat, a temporary bulge in the overall Fashion Diet challenge.

So, do you forgive me?

And the details…

I get a lot of style inspiration from everyday things. The colour of my Mr’s morning coffee, the pink flowers on my orchid plant, a birthday card with a 50s glamour puss on the front, for example. But much of my inspiration comes from fellow bloggers. I love to see a sneak peek of a new dress, a hat worn at a jaunty angle or some truly expert layering. Reading daily fashion blogs sends me scuttling to my wardrobe to rifle through my clothes, looking for some way to pay homage to my favourite fashionable fillies. And today I did just that.

Christina from Second Skin has such a solid sense of style, it makes me feel almost joyous. She rocks pretty hats, should have a degree in belting and has the most wonderful selection of coats I’ve ever laid eyes on. But my favourite fashion quirk of Christina’s is the way she wears socks and sandals.

Once the whispered fashion faux pas of grandfathers and hideously uncool dads, socks and sandals have become a signature look amongst the indie fash pack – think Alexa Chung in bobby socks and peep toe brogues and you’re on the right track. When I saw Christina rocking this very look here, I knew I had to try it for myself.

I wasn’t brave enough to go for anything but black socks, but I think a pink pair would set this outfit off perfectly. Maybe next time? What do you think? Are socks and sandals for you, or will you leave them to the older (and more masculine!) generation? I’d love to know!

The utterly wonderful Jessica of Polished Sense contacted me a few weeks ago, asking if I’d like to model some of her fabulous shoes, along with gorgeous clothing and accessories from her enviable stylist closet.

Yesterday, I trotted off to the post office to pick up my package. And I was bowled over! Take a look…

This oh-so-fabulous box was stuffed full of fashionable treats! I ran around my house squealing. And then I got to work!

I styled a few different looks with the pieces Jessica sent me, mixing them in with my own wardrobe. My favourite has to be Pretty Punk – what about you? Do you have a favourite look? How would you style these pieces? I’d love to know!

A huge thanks to Jessica at Polished Sense. Go take a look at her wonderful website for shoes galore – treat your feet to something sweet!

Feeling thrifty for London Fashion Week

A few weeks ago, I got an email from Helen at Vouchercodes.co.uk inviting me to take part in their purse-friendly challenge for London Fashion Week.

The aim is to prove that style doesn’t have to leave you sobbing at the cash point, and the task was to create an oh-so fabulous outfit yet inexpensive outfit.

What I’m wearing:
Dress: £5, Primark
Tee: £3, Primark
Tights: £2, H&M
Blazer: £5, charity shop
Leather brogues: £7, eBay
Necklace: £1, car boot sale
Rings: 50p and £1, car boot sale

Outfit total = £24.50

This is definitely the cheapest outfit in my wardrobe. And it’s not too shabby, right? I needed to be a little smarter than usual today as I had a client meeting, so this dress and blazer combo was perfect. Since starting my Fashion Diet, I’ve been much more aware of how much things cost, and I’m always on the hunt for ways to save my pennies. Remember my Steve Madden boots? I used a code from Vouchercodes.co.uk to get free delivery from ASOS, knocking £5 off my order. And what about my bird print dress? I got 20% off the price with another code. It’s always worth a quick search before you shop.

What’s the cheapest item in your wardrobe? Are you a bonafide bargain hunter or flash with your cash? I’d love to know!

Reduce, reuse, recycle

Are you guys any good at recycling? I’m not. I can get along with putting my cardboard and plastic in the green bin, but I can’t say I’m a regular at the bottle bank. Which is terrible, I know. Must try harder.

What about recycling clothes? That’s where I think I redeem myself. I never, ever throw clothes away, unless they’re completely ruined or stained beyond the powers of Persil. I’m an eBay aficionado, a charity shop donator and a hand-me-down sister. Every few months, I’ll purge my wardrobe of all things unstylish, unwearable and unloved and give them away through my tried and tested channels. I’m utterly ruthless – nothing escapes my critical eye. So what if peg leg trousers are ready for a comeback? Be gone! Maybe I will wear a white skirt come summer but right now it’s February! Get out!

This inevitably leads to fashion mourning. The white skirt was covered in purple pansies and would’ve looked positively dreamy with the grey boots I’m wearing today. And yes, peg leg trouser did make a comeback… and yes, I could’ve worn them with my black leather jacket and heeled brogues. Hindsight, dear followers, is completely useless.

Have you ever gotten rid of something and immediately regretted it? Those shoes you gave to your sister and tried to steal back under cover of darkness? Or the cute clutch you donated to charity and bought again a week later? (Yes, I’ve done both of these things…) I’d love to know!
