Hey Girl, Whatcha Doing?

Posted in Daily Outfits, Fashion.

I know I’m approximately 245 years behind everyone else on this, but – I’ve just watched the entire first season of New Girl and I have a huge girl crush on Jess, Zooey Deschanel’s character. So much so that since I had a blunt fringe cut in, I find myself dressing more whimsically, singing what I’m doing and wondering if I can retrain as a teacher.

My style has always been influenced by TV and film. I remember watching the first Twilight film (don’t judge) and loving Bella’s simple, slightly grungy outfits so much I dug out my Converse and bought a job lot of grey marl t-shirts. When I was a teen my style went from strappy vests and knee-high boots a la Buffy to band tees and army jackets like Daria. And earlier than that, I had a very unfortunate obsession with tartan kilts thanks to Cher.

So, today’s outfit is inspired by Jess – I found the vintage Ralph Lauren dress in a charity shop and fell in love with its full skirt and cute collar. It’s a little big, but nothing a bit of belting can’t sort (my top tip for too-big bargains – belt ’em!). I paired it with a striped tee, leopard print heels and London Retro glasses I haven’t worn in ages for a quirky, girly look that I hope Ms. Deschanel would approve of.

Do you pick up style tips from the big screen? Which character has influenced the way you dress?

A Weekend Offline (mostly)

Posted in Daily Outfits, Travel.

This weekend, Rob and I were in Newmarket, living the high life at the Bedford Lodge Hotel courtesy of Tesco Magazine. I’ll be writing a full review of the experience later this week, but for now I thought I’d share these photos of the outfit I wore on Saturday night.

It was swelteringly hot in Suffolk – 32 degrees at one point – but by 8pm the day had cooled into a perfect summer evening. I wore a floaty Zara dress with simple flats and statement jewels, and Rob snapped these photos in the glorious hotel grounds just before we sat down for dinner.

We had an absolutely amazing weekend – the food was so utterly delicious, the weather was wonderful, the hotel was spotless and luxurious. I rarely spend an entire weekend away from my computer so it was nice to leave it behind and just have fun… although I did do some Instagramming. I’m only human, after all.

I don’t usually post personal photos on the blog (bit funny about things like that, not sure why), but I thought this one deserved a share. I love that Rob’s shirt coordinates with the flowers – he’s a keeper!

Do you allow yourself time offline at the weekend? Feels good, doesn’t it?

Does a Change in Hair Mean a Change in Style?

Posted in Beauty, Daily Outfits, Fashion.

I recently had my hair cut. You may have heard. I’m now sporting a cute bob with blunt fringe – it’s a feminine, girly look, very different from my previous straight style and even further away from the pixie crop I had this time last year.

Since going for the chop, I’ve found myself drawn to cute tea dresses, vintage-style brogues and ballet pumps over the Disco Pants and sharp blazers I was wearing. Maybe it’s because I’ve watched two seasons of New Girl back to back, but my new hair makes me want to dress like Zooey Deschanel.

I’ve had this Matalan floral dress for ages, but usually prefer to wear it with ankle boots, a leather jacket and a statement necklace. Today, with my cute crop, I went for a softer, sweeter look – a kitsch brooch, pink nails and pretty satchel. It’s not a huge leap, but it’s something slightly different and I like it.

What do you think – does your style change when your hair does?

Makeup Classes For Girls With Glasses – Lips

Posted in Beauty, Fashion.

My first post on makeup for bespectacled ladies went down so well, I’ve decided to make it into a bit of a series. Starting with lips!

I tend to keep my eye makeup quite natural, preferring to focus on rosy cheeks and bright lips to add colour to my face. If you wear glasses, eye makeup can lead to smudged lenses, watery eyes and general annoyance, so a pretty pout is a good alternative. Here are my favourite colours…

Revlon Just Bitten Kissable lip stain balm in Lovesick

These are the lip colours I wear most often. I’m a huge fan of Topshop lipsticks (duh!) – they have a long-lasting, matte finish and the colours are really bright and pigmented. I also love the Revlon Just Bitten Kissable lip stains, which have a glossy finish and leave lips feeling really moisturised and soft.

I don’t like anything too heavy on my lips so I don’t use a liner or primer – I just whack it on and hope for the best. I lick my lips a lot so will usually reapply around lunchtime but find these formulas don’t go gloopy or cakey in the corners.

For me, lipstick is an easy, fuss-free way to brighten up my makeup. My heavy, black frames need a bit of balance and I think elaborate eye makeup can look a bit OTT with statement glasses, so taking the focus to another part of my face just evens things out a bit.

I decided to stick with the Revlon lip stain for today’s look… it matches my nails nicely!

Is lipstick part of your daily makeup routine or do you save it for special occasions? And if you wear glasses, do you focus on lips over eyes or do you prefer to highlight your peepers?

Blogger Trends I Can’t Do #1: Nail Art

Posted in Beauty.

After a thrilling two weeks of Olympic action, this morning I decided to show my appreciation for Team GB with a spot of Union Flag nail art. How fitting, I mused as I set up my painting station – waving them off with patriotic talons. I took a moment to think about how great they’d look as I held my Union Flag tea towel (Ikea, if you’re wondering) aloft, singing along to Spice Up Your Life at the Closing Ceremony. And this brilliant guide by The Nailasaurus made it seem so easy – I mean, it’s just painting lines, innit? Simple.

My nail art ‘kit’

Now, I’m not particularly skilled in the nail art department. Or any kind of art department, come to think of it. I am constantly amazed by the flashy fingers of Kristabel and Gem – at our last few meet-ups, they’ve both sported amazing displays of colour and pattern, whereas I’ve rocked a classic ‘painted-on-train-during-bumpy-bit’ beige style. But I’m nothing if not enthusiastic, so I jumped straight in and started on step one – the white base coat.

I used OPI, Models Own and Topshop polishes and a Seche Vite topcoat

It started going wrong immediately. Why is white nail polish so HARD to apply? But, with an uneven and streaky base in place, it was time to attempt the red cross. Now, I don’t know if regular nail artists are just more highly evolved or if they’ve trained their finger muscles into total submission, but I found it physically impossible to draw a straight line on my own nail. My crosses looked like the work of five year olds let loose on the living room walls. Crooked, wonky, smudged, too thick – awful. I whipped them off (the Bourjois remover is AMAZING, btw). And started again. And again. And again.

On my fourth attempt my full set of Union Jack nails had been reduced to two ‘accent’ nails and my temper was as frayed as my cuticles. I had crosses. Now, I needed thinner, diagonal crosses. Slowly, slowly I inched towards my nail, gently, gently I placed the brush down, carefully, carefully I moved it across… oh, look at that. Ruined. It took all my strength not to lob the brush across the room and scream like a toddler.

After an hour spent hunched over, inhaling polish fumes, I’d had enough. I painted my nails in a simple red, white, blue and gold sequence and called it a day. Team GB, you’ve been awesome, but my Union Flag nails didn’t even make it out of the blocks.

Despite its huge popularity with bloggers, nail art is something I just don’t have the skill or patience for. I love how it looks and will happily sit still while someone else doodles on my fingers, but I’ll hold my hands up and admit – I’m terrible at it. And although I do like how my paired down patriotic nails turned out, I think they’re a bronze at best.

What about you – are you a fan of nail art? Ever created something spectacular on your own fingers? Send me your pics on Twitter!
