The Wedding Venue

Posted in Daily Outfits, Weddings.

When I first wrote about my upcoming (well, in 13 months) wedding I said I didn’t want to overload the blog with my planning – if you want to see endless images of possible bouquets, check out my borderline-obsessive Pinterest – but I thought I’d share these photos with you anyway.

Last night Rob and I visited our wedding ceremony venue to pay the deposit and wander round in the sunshine. If you live in Yorkshire you might recognise it – I’m not going to give the name because I’m weirdly protective of it but it’s a beautiful old building with the most gorgeous grounds. We’ll be having our ceremony and some photos here before going to our next venue for the afternoon and evening celebrations. We’re slowly booking the big, important things and everything seems to be coming together nicely, which is very exciting!

I’m wearing a super-cute and super-short dress I picked up in the ASOS sale. How adorable are those gingerbread men? I love this dress but it really is rather short… I’m sure I flashed my pants more than a few times while wearing it. Don’t worry though – they were nice pants.

A Drastic Change (kind of)

Posted in Beauty, Blogging.

I’ve never understood why people are so precious about their hair. But then again, I don’t have waist-length, glossy auburn curls, so maybe that’s why I can sit down in a hairdresser’s chair and say ‘do what you like’.

Over the past five years I’ve gone from long and naturally blonde to highlighted, bobbed, cropped, pixie cropped, fringed, brunette, red (unintentionally – damn you home dye), brunette again (phew), ombré, approaching shoulder length, curly and moving towards blonde again. My hair, once baby soft and shiny, was looking tired, dry and under stress. So when Leeds salon Russell Eaton asked if I’d like to pop in for a colour, cut and blow dry, I said ‘oh God yes’.

I love changing my hair and experimenting with different looks, and I’m not afraid of coming out looking a bit odd – it all grows back eventually. So when I arrived at the salon, I gave my stylist – the lovely and perfectly-pink-haired Amelia – a general idea of what I wanted but with the prefix ‘I’m not really bothered’. She talked me through every stage of my cut – although I’m growing my hair, she pointed out the slight mullet situation I had going on and suggested we shorten the back and even out the length. I mused over a fringe and she agreed, telling me fringes give fine hair body and volume. And we decided to get rid of the ombré effect altogether, going for subtle highlights and a richer, darker colour. With all that sorted, we (well, she – I just sat there and ate a biscuit) got started!

When I was arranging my appointment at Russell Eaton, I couldn’t picture the salon at all but it’s actually a very prominent building – if you’re a Leeds local, it’s at the bottom of Briggate, on the corner across the road from Nando’s. Inside it’s very calm and relaxed – I often find going to the hairdressers a stressful experience, but I was soon settled with a water and a biscuit (hot drinks are available – I just don’t drink them!) and was given a complimentary head and shoulder massage. At first I was a little apprehensive about this, but it’s so soothing and not at all weird. I promise.

With my highlights in place and a stack of mags to keep me busy, I sat back and relaxed for 35 minutes.  Lovely members of staff kept checking on me as they walked past, and salon owner Rob popped a clip in my foils when he noticed they kept flipping forward into my face. And it wasn’t just me getting the special treatment – there were customers either side of me enjoying the same attentiveness.

After a quick wash in a very swanky sink area, I was back in the chair for my cut. Amelia explained the products she was using, all of which were suitable for my hair type – I’ve had my hair cut by so many hairdressers who have no idea what to do with fine hair, which means I leave the salon with an overloaded, limp mop that I just have to wash and style again at home. Not this time though!

When each strand was snipped, Amelia dried my hair and styled it with a very small amount of serum and some hairspray. She’s the first hairdresser in a good few years who hasn’t tried to tip half a bottle of that awful volumising powder onto me, so she gets huge props for creating volume without resorting to what is basically cornflower.

And the result?

I’m so pleased with my new look – the dry, damaged ends are gone, the colour’s more even and flattering and I love the fringe! Thanks, Russell Eaton!

What do you think?

Heads up – I was treated to a complimentary colour, cut and blow dry at Russell Eaton Leeds, but didn’t receive any payment for this post.

Cheering on Team GBbeauty blog uk

Last weekend my friend Laura and I headed down to London to soak up the Olympic atmosphere. We’ve both become mildly obsessed with the BBC’s Olympic coverage (when you start crying at a man shooting flying purple blobs with a rifle, you know it’s gone too far) and we were determined to see an event in real life, despite having no tickets.

We stayed in easyHotel Victoria – I’ve stayed here a few times and although the rooms are absolutely tiny and you have to pay £5 to use the TV, it’s perfect for a night or two when you’re out and about. Laura was not impressed with the lack of surfaces for our Pimm’s-in-a-can, but we soon saw to that by popping them on the windowsill. Resourceful.

On Sunday morning we took the tube to Embankment (I decided to use my Olympic Oyster card holder rather than the lovely Kate Spade one!) and bagged a prime spot against the barriers to watch the women’s marathon. The atmosphere was amazing – people were laughing and chatting, cheering on every runner, going mad for Team GB and generally being ace. And even when the ‘biblical storm’ hit us, we huddled under our umbrella and waved our flags.

Collecting nice things

I’ve been trying to watch the pennies recently (saving them for something kinda important next year… my wedding!) so my purchases have been more modest, but I have picked up some lovely bits and bobs.

The London map and vintage drummer poster were both TK Maxx bargains at £14.99 and £9.99 each (and framed, too!). I’m creating a bit of a picture wall in our living room with the theme ‘places we’ve been’ – the photos are of me and Rob at the top of the Rockefeller Center in NYC and me, Rob and his sister Jenn at the top of the Sears Tower in Chicago.

This adorable name necklace was kindly sent to me by Tatty Devine after I missed their lilac launch party in July. I love it! The fox ring was an ASOS sale purchase, such a bargain at £4.50.

Origins products have been all over beauty blogs recently – I’m always looking for solutions to my oily skin, so the Zero Oil range sounded perfect. This is my second purchase of the Deep Pore Cleanser as I love it so much, and so far the Spot Remover is impressing me! My love of Revlon’s Just Bitten Kissable balm stains is already well documented so I won’t go into it again, but man, do I love these things!

Dancing to Jessie J

The main reason I was in London last weekend was to see Jessie J perform at the Roundhouse in Camden as a guest of vitaminwater. It was such an amazing show – I’ve seen Jessie J live before and enjoyed it, but she really pulled out all the stops for this. Plus she looked fab in a short, sequinned dress and high-top trainers!

The last song of the night was Domino (a personal favourite and brilliant dancing tune) and as it came to an end, confetti cascaded from the sky and fluttered down around the crowd. Everyone just looked so happy – Team GB had won six golds earlier in the day and people were in such high spirits. I had such a great night – thanks, vitaminwater!

Other stuff

A few final snaps of things I’ve done in the last few weeks – lunch at Leon (falafel and sweet potato wrap, oh my!), working at my studio in Leeds (with a fancy new napkin holder!), pink champagne at York Racecourse with my best friends and watching the Opening Ceremony from the most comfortable beanbags in the world at Duke Studios. Lovely stuff!

The £6 Zara Heels

Posted in Daily Outfits, Fashion.

Over the years I’ve slowly moved away from bargain hunting – these days I have more cash but less time, which means I’m more likely to nip in to my favourite shops and pick out the pieces I like rather than spend hours trawling the sales rails for those elusive reductions.

But bargain hunting is ingrained in me and I still love the thrill of finding something pretty for a great price. Enter the £6 Zara heels…

Six pounds! For these! I wore them with a Zara dress – another sale bargain at £12.99 – and a Topshop khaki vest which I cannot get enough of (sadly that was NOT cheap at £30). They’re rather high – definitely taxi-and-dinner rather than drinks-and-dancing shoes – but the leather is butter soft and I love the cute rounded toes.

The heels were reduced from their original price of £40 and finding them has kickstarted my hunting instinct. Over the last few months I’ve become a bit disillusioned with charity shops (something I wrote about here) but this week I’m getting back into my thrifty ways, thinking about the price and looking for those brilliant bargains.

Have you found any bargains lately? On the high street or second hand?

What Do You Like About Yourself?

Posted in Daily Outfits, Fashion, Writing.

This year, all eyes are on the Brits. We’ve got the Olympics in London, it was the Diamond Jubilee a few months ago – the whole world is watching and wondering what it’s like to be British. Us Brits are known for many things – red double deckers, drinking tea, Shakespeare, our ability to queue – but one characteristic that ties many of us together is our self-deprecating nature.

Unlike many Americans, who celebrate their innate fabulousness at every opportunity, we Brits find it hard to say ‘hey, I look good today‘. When we’re paid a compliment, we brush it away. We laugh at ourselves and don’t take things too seriously. Which is awesome and makes us excellent, non-braggy people. But sometimes it’s nice to brag. Sometimes we deserve a little self-congratulatory moment. Especially when it comes to our bodies and appearances, which many of us find so hard to love.

When I started editing these photos, I thought to myself: ‘hey, my legs look pretty damn good in these photos’. I thought about saying that in a blog post and scoffed. Of course I’m not going to say that. It’ll make me sound ridiculous. Who celebrates their own legs? Who admits they actually LIKE something about themselves?! Not in this country. Not on my turf.

But I thought about it some more and wondered why we shy away from celebrating things we like about ourselves. Someone recently told me I looked like I’d lost a bit of weight and I immediately waved them away, blushing and muttering about doughnuts and dimply thighs. Our British reserve, that attitude that makes us polite and bumbling and floppy-haired, holds us back. It stops us from shouting about our achievement, even if said achievement is just relatively toned legs.

So. I’d like you to tell me one thing you like – nay, LOVE – about yourself today. And I don’t want any of this ‘I’m a good listener’ nonsense – this is a fashion blog, let’s not get too deep. No, I want to know about your amazing hair or nice nails or your killer ass. I want great boobs, curvy waists and rosy cheeks. And if you can’t think of a single thing, send me a photo of yourself and I’ll tell you what you’re missing.

Go forth and love thyself. It’s what Shakespeare would’ve wanted.
