It’s not often I take pictures of my weekend outfits – denim features regularly, usually paired with a chunky knit and boots. Hardly the most inspiring of combinations! But after purchasing this striped sweater from Next on Saturday, I felt its first outing deserved a little more care and attention.

These boyfriend jeans are usually relegated to my not-leaving-the-house days, but as skinny jeans and Sundays just don’t mix, I pulled them out, belted them up and added a printed scarf and plaited belt. An outfit that’s roomy enough to accommodate a chicken pitta with chips, AND looks kinda cute to boot? Done!

PS – Just before Christmas the lovely girls at Cellardoor Magazine featured me in their Meet The Blogger post. You can read my interview here, and make sure you check out the magazine too – so cute.

What’s Next For S/S 11

Posted in Daily Outfits, Fashion.

I was delighted and somewhat surprised to be invited to the Next Bloggers’ Event last week. I never really think of myself as ‘fashionable’ – I love clothes and putting outfits together, but I usually just choose things I like and hope for the best. When I heard the event involved a ‘styling challenge’ I was excited and a little apprehensive, but determined to give it my best shot.

I arrived in Leicester at 9.30am and was thrilled to finally meet Take Ten founder Sarah, who’d flown down from Glasgow the night before. As we waited, it was easy to spot the bloggers as people poured from the station. There were brogues, sheer shirts and satchels aplenty as we boarded the huge bus which took us to Next HQ, and I had fun chatting to Winnie and Kristabel as we made our way.

Breakfast took place outside the mock shop, where the team style the layouts and window displays for all their stores.

After nibbles and coffees, we settled down to listen to the Next womenswear designs as they took us through the Spirng/Summer 2011 collections. Next has never been part of my shopping routine, but after seeing some of the wonderful pieces they have coming up, I know I’ll be a regular visitor!

A few of my favourite pieces, hastily snapped.

After the breakfast briefing, an ominous rail was wheeled out – the styling challenge was upon us! We were each assigned a piece to style and as I eyed the white blazer with trepidation, I was relieved to hear my name called for the white lace top. Until I remembered I was wearing a black bra…

The challenge pieces – I love those wide leg denim trousers.

The mock shop before we started our challenge…

Now, being given free reign to run around a shop with armfuls of clothing and shoes hanging by their straps from every finger has long since been a dream of mine. But in reality the styling challenge was quite stressful! The lace top was lovely, but I needed flesh coloured underwear (why didn’t I listen to Tyra? ALWAYS flesh coloured underwear on a go-see!) and a cami underneath it… and in the absence of both those things, I needed something to cover most of it.

… and after!

After much grabbing and discarding, buttoning and unbuttoning, I finally settled on my look. Everyone said the trousers were ‘very me’, which I’m sure was a compliment! Having a professional photo taken was rather unsettling – I’m not the best of models when it’s just me and my tripod, so it was all a bit uncomfortable! It turned out okay in the end though, and I am pleased with my look. I’ll definitely be purchasing a pair of these trousers.

We finished the day with champagne and chatter. It was lovely to meet Iris

After wolfing down some food (mini versions meant I had a fish pie, beef stroganoff and mushroom risotto, followed by sticky toffee pudding. Everything should come in miniature), the winners of the styling challenge were announced. My favourite look was Shini’s – she worked her magic with the high waisted jeans.

In true fashion style, I had to jump in a cab and hot foot it to the train station to catch my transportation home. Clattering across the platform in 4 in heels, cape billowing behind me, I wondered if I’d finally made it as a working fashionista… until I realised I needed to run for it, and exploded through the doors of the train cursing ‘bloody ‘ell!!’ and removing my shoes in a most unstylish manner. Maybe not then.

Huge thanks to the folks at Next for having us, and to Jenny at Spreading Jam for keeping us all happy and organised.

What’s In My Makeup Bag?

Posted in Writing.

Okay, I admit it – I am disgustingly nosy. I love having a virtual (and sometimes real life, as my friends will confirm) rummage through other people’s bags, wardrobes and kitchen drawers. I think it’s fascinating to discover the things people treasure.

I get asked about my makeup quite often (weirdly, as I never, ever mention it and rarely take close ups of my face!) so when Paula from Pink Bow gave us a peek at her makeup, I thought I’d do the same.

I keep all my makeup in this white leather vanity case from Clinique. It’s huge with lots of pockets, making it perfect for carting a large collection around.

Photobucket
I use Benefit’s Bad Gal kohl pencil to create smoky eyes. Touche Eclat is a makeup must-have that I’ve been using since I was 15. The Clinique mascara is new – I took an old mascara to the Clinique counter in Debenhams and they swapped it for this one, for free!

Estee Lauder Double Wear has always been my favourite foundation. Nothing sticks to skin like it! I use Benefit’s Erase Paste to brighten under my eyes. Lots of people ask about my blusher (I must wear a lot) – it’s Topshop’s cream blusher in Flush.

I love Chanel eyeshadows – gorgeous shades, great staying power and the compacts look beautiful on my dresser. The perfume atomiser was picked up in a charity shop for a few pounds – I’ve always wanted one.

My signature scent is J’adore Dior, but Marc Jacobs’ Daisy comes a close second. The hand cream is from L’Occitane and smells divine.

As Inspired By… The Next Bloggers

Posted in Daily Outfits.

On Tuesday I travelled to Leicester for the Next blogging day – a fantastic experience which I’ll blog about in more detail in another post. I was lucky enough to meet some really amazing bloggers, some whose blogs I’ve been reading since I started out and others who I couldn’t wait to get to know better.

I get most of my outfit inspiration from real people so it was a treat to be surrounded by so many stylish ladies, and it was clear that one trend was a favourite. Kristabel, Jazmine, Jill and Lucy were all wearing one. When the Next designers showed us a few from their upcoming Spring 11 range, a collective ‘ooohhhh’ could be heard. The bloggers have spoken – sheer, oversized shirts (especially ones with pointy collars) are officially lovely.

Please excuse the weird orange glow on my face. It’s not badly applied bronzer, just the street light that was glaring down on me. Stupid dark mornings.

Wearing: H&M sheer shirt, Primark cardigan, ASOS jeans, French Connection shoes, Mango ring
On: Wednesday 12th January
For: Back at my desk, dreaming of sipping champagne and rushing around a Next store trying on clothes

I bought this khaki shirt last summer but have never really got the hang of styling it. Loose, baggy silhouettes are my worst enemy, but belting this piece just ruins the romance. So I popped this buttoned-up cardigan on over the top to add shape (and tone down the sheerness… no one needs to see a bra at 9am) and teamed it with simple black skinnies and my new favourite shoes.

I really love this look and think the shirt (along with a few more in different colours that I plan on buying) will become a spring staple.

A Little Bird Told Me About… Red or Dead

Posted in Daily Outfits.

Remember Red or Dead? If you were a 90s fashionista, you probably owned a piece from their collection. I had a pair of neon blue and yellow foam wedge sandals (bought for a year 9 disco) and the infamous rainbow striped kitten heel slingbacks – a copy of a pair Carrie wore on Sex and the City.

The brand, started by Wayne Hemingway and his wife Geraldine in 1982, exploded in the 90s but petered out as fashion moved on. Things have been quiet until recently, when Red or Dead resurfaced.

I was contacted by the Red or Dead PR team who asked if I’d like to choose an item from their clothing collection and a pair of tights from their range. Initially it was nostalgia that interested me – would they rework that rainbow stripe for 2011? But after looking at the range I was thoroughly impressed. Here’s what I chose:

For: Hunting for bargains in my favourite charity shop

It’s the attention to detail that makes this coat spectacular. Everything from the silky printed lining inside to the adorable zebra medal pinned to the lapel. The heavy cotton means it’s warm enough for even the coldest of days and the sharp, military-style silhouette is so elegant, even over jeans and a t-shirt.

I’ve yet to wear the tights but anything that comes in a pink package emblazoned with the phrase ‘glorious gussets’ is bound to be wonderful, so I have high hopes.

I’m really impressed with the quality and design of the things I’ve seen from Red or Dead. Although the brand is synonymous with the 90s, they’ve created pieces that are relevant right now. I especially love the swimwear and handbag collections, although some of the clothing is a little too ‘graphic print jersey’ for me. One thing I really don’t like is the website – what’s going on there?!

Are you familiar with Red or Dead? What do you think of the range?
