A Little Bird Told Me About… Stolen Thunder

Posted in Daily Outfits, Fashion, Writing.

Welcome to A Little Bird Told Me About… – a new series that sees me scouring the interwebs for beautiful brands, exciting new products and pretty things to feast your eyes upon.

First to be featured is the eco-friendly and oh-so lovely jewellery and accessories range by Stolen Thunder.

The wonderful folks at Stolen Thunder create playful pieces with wood and vintage chain. Their hand drawn graphics are inspired by childhood memories and transformed into original necklaces, rings, brooches and more.

This cute, treat-filled bauble is part of Stolen Thunder’s gift wrapping service.

I was sent two items from the collection, and I’m rather taken with them both…

Baby Russian Doll Necklace, £23.50

Bambi Necklace, £28.20

The craftsmanship on each piece is just a joy to behold, and I love the unique clasp tags displaying the brand. Wooden jewellery is unusual and unique – so many people asked where my necklace was from when I wore it today.

For: A spot of shopping, a bit of cleaning and a lot of lounging on a day off work

Alice and Joy are the brains behind Stolen Thunder’s beauty, and they definitely know the way to a woman’s heart – Marina and the Diamonds is a fan and the Party collection was designed for (and worn by) Marina on her Family Jewels tour.

Stolen Thunder pieces are handmade in England with love and you can have one of your very own with just a couple of clicks on the website. Next on my list is a personalised necklace… or ring… or both. Now I need to decide what I want my necklace… or ring… or both to say. I <3 pugs? I <3 cheese? Grammar 4 eva? Any suggestions?

The Article: The Puffa Jacket Is Not Your Friend and Other Rules for Winter Wardrobes

Posted in Daily Outfits, Fashion, Writing.

My friend Sarah* has a coat. It’s mauve. Shiny. Has no discernible shape. It zips right up to the neck, creating a highly attractive ‘shelf bosom’, and cuts off mid-thigh making Sarah look short and stumpy, even though she’s size 10 and shops in the tall section. The overall effect is that of the Michelin Man dressed in his Christmas best. Add a hat, scarf, gloves and wellies to the equation and she’s instantly transformed from girl to wool-trimmed inflated tyre.

I’m not afraid to tell Sarah I hate her coat. She hates it too. But, as she tells me every time she slips the wretched thing over her fabulous Alexa-inspired outfit, it’s stuffed with feathers. I’ll give you a second to digest that – yep, she’s walking the streets wrapped in a winter weight duvet, and that’s okay, because it keeps her warm.

Next time you’re out and about, take a look around. How many people do you see swaddled in sleeping bags masquerading as coats? Or wearing attire designed for scaling Mount Everest while browsing the rails in H&M? Do you think they need a hypothermia-resistant lining for choosing their Christmas party outfit? No. And don’t even get me started on hiking boots, waterproof trousers and/or hats with ear flaps.

It seems the good British public are crying out for a winter intervention and a new outdoor wardrobe – one that doesn’t include rubber, a drawstring hood or feather stuffing. How about a tailored wool coat? A faux fur stole? A pair of knee high leather boots, a chic beret and some knitted mittens?

Come on, you can do it. Step away from Millets and make your way to Urban Outfitters. This camel cape would look fabulous over skinny jeans and boots. Don’t worry, I’ll hold your puffa jacket for you…

On: Saturday 27th November
For: The Aussie Bloggers’ Market

Yes, I am hideously under dressed for the weather. Again. Although I spent minimal time outside in this outfit, because Saturday was the Aussie Bloggers’ Market.

Aussie events are always fantastic, but I especially loved this one. Online journalist, creator of Bitch Buzz and all-round awesome person Cate Sevilla was there to talk to us about blogging, advertising, writing, building a community and other things I find intensely interesting. None of my real life friends are remotely bothered about blogging, so it was lovely to chat to to someone face to face about page views, ad spots and platforms. The wonderful Muireann was there too, as well as lots of other lovely bloggers, delicious food, a very helpful professional photographer and an utterly terrifying ‘flirt guru’.

I love learning new things, especially when learning involves getting my hair did and eating free baking, and doesn’t involve books or lined paper. Huge thanks to Cate for the inspiration, Muireann for the jokes and Aussie for general fantastic-ness. Time to put my new knowledge into action!

Sunday Smile #28

Posted in Home.

Greetings from a very cold and snowy Yorkshire! Big, fat flakes are currently falling from the sky with wild abandon –  I’m watching from the sofa with House on the TV and the smell of baking brownies filling the flat. Such a lovely way to spend a Sunday.

If you follow me on Twitter you might’ve seen my angry outburst earlier in the week. The house we were due to move into, the house we’d been so excited about for weeks, the house I’d been lovingly hunting down second hand treasures for, unfortunately is no longer ours. We made the decision to pull out of the move – the entire staff of our letting agency going on holiday and not coming back until 3 days after our agreed move in date was the final straw. So, with that disappointment hanging over our heads, Rob and I decided to make the most of our free weekend (we had reserved it for packing) by doing things that make us happy.

When the view’s this cold, the living room is the best place to be.

I love candles. As soon as the weather turns, I dot them all over the house. Ikea is the best place to buy them – they stock all shapes and sizes for very cheap prices.

Photobucket
I put tealights in teacups for a cute, vintage feel. Both teacups were part of sets I bought in charity shops.

Magazines are my guilty pleasure. I love settling down with a new glossy, flicking through the pages and making wishlists.

Baking is the best way to warm up on a chilly afternoon. The Hummingbird Bakery Cookbook is one of my favourites…

And today called for chocolate brownies. I added chopped nuts to the mixture to give them some crunch.

Delicious.

As Inspired By… the stylish heart

Posted in Blogging, Daily Outfits.

On my travels across the internet, I often come across people who inspire me – whether it’s with their style, home décor, culinary skills or wicked wit. Sarah of the stylish heart is one of my most-recent discoveries. I love her vintage, girly, whimsical style and her obsession with that fabulous H&M hat.

Today’s outfit was inspired by Sarah’s leather and lace look.

On: Thursday 25th November (30 days ’til Christmas!)
For: Sitting hopefully at my desk, waiting for a blizzard

This Republic dress has suffered a shrinkage during washing – I wanted to wear it with black opaques but fear of indecent exposure had me reaching for leggings instead. I still think it’s probably a little thigh-skimming for work, but hey. I added the fluffy leopard print hat when I stepped outside into sub-zero temperatures – not quite as adorable as Sarah’s black boater, but it doesn’t make me look completely bald, which is a huge plus in my book.

What do you think? Have I done Sarah justice? And who’s inspiring you today?
