Thrifted harem pants (originally ASOS), Primark top, H&M cardigan, Primark pumps, thrifted ring, gold name necklace

On Monday the oh-so-lovely Victoria from Lily Loves Lola left me a comment that really got me thinking…

“I wish I had room for such creativity. My new job seems dead smart – today I wore black pumps, black trousers and a stripy shirt. Seriously no fashion breaking look there! Grr.”

Hands up if you have the same problem! In offices across the world, secretly stylish folk are forced into shiny black trousers, straining white shirts and sensible shoes. I’ve suffered the same fate myself – I once worked in a council-run office with the most basic of dress codes – black trousers, black shoes, white t-shirt. I’ve never felt so stifled in all my life. My wardrobe was overflowing with white t-shirts in every shape you can imagine. I rocked ruffles, slashed necks, bell sleeves and once, polka dots, which saw me hauled in front of the boss for ‘inappropriate patterns’ (I kid you not).

It’s really easy to fall into the workwear trap – you buy 10 versions of the same thing and wear them day after day. Life becomes a monochrome nightmare and that red cardigan you just HAD TO HAVE 3 months ago now hurts your eyes. Luckily enough, I can wear whatever I fancy at work, but there are times I need to be smarter and I’m loathe to go back to black and white. Take a look at my top tips for office dressing and let me know how you flex your fashion muscles when dressing for work by leaving a comment. I’d love to know!

Bottoms up
If you’re restricted to smart trousers or skirts, look for interesting shapes to add a little drama to the daily grind. The harem trousers I’m wearing today have clever draping that flatters the figure, and the shorter leg length is great for warmer weather. I’m also a huge fan of pencil skirts – go all Mad Men by wearing yours on the waist and belted.

Top of the class
If you can get away with them, printed tees make your office outfit fun and fashionable. Look for classic cotton in simple, muted tones – spring’s nude colours look great against black. If you need to be smarter, chiffon blouses make for a softer look, or work that 50s secretary vibe with a silk pussybow shirt in a bright, jewel shade.

Best foot forward
Shoes are your secret weapons – I dare you to go as bright and bold as you can! If your office is fastidious about footwear, wear your most outrageous heels with wide legged trousers. No one will see them, but you’ll know how fabulous your feet look! If you like to keep close to the ground (like me), pretty flats in a range of colours and fabrics are essential. Leather gladiator sandals are great for the summer, but treat your feet to a pedicure first.

Divine details
From loud and proud cocktail rings to classic gold chains, accessories can brighten up the plainest of uniforms. If your outfit is classic, wear more than one statement ring to gaze at while you’re typing. Layered necklaces look stylish over simple tees and belts, bangles and hairbands are your fashionable friends. Even a Blockbuster video uniform (that I wore for 2 years when I worked there) can be made beautiful with accessories!

Florals done differently

Today I woke up to snow. After yesterday’s spring love-in, it was a bit of a shock. I wanted to keep up my spring-themed outfits without suffering hypothermia, so I went with a more masculine take on florals. I’m not entirely convinced, but it was 7.45 and I needed to leave. How could I improve this one, guys? Skinnier jeans? Different shoes? Go on – get your grubby mitts on my outfit and make it fierce. I know you want to!

In other news, I’m wearing the second of my charity shop finds from the weekend – this blush pink knitted waistcoat-style cardigan is originally from Kookai and is a wool/silk mix. The quality is stunning and I think this would’ve been an expensive purchase for its first owner. I bagged it for a bargainous £4.99. High five!

It’s not often that the weather reflects the calendar. Well – not in England, anyway. We get sleet in May, blazing sunshine in November and it never snows on Christmas Day. So imagine my surprise when I pulled back the curtains on the first day of spring (today, fact fans) and saw a decidedly spring-like morning! Sunshine! Blue sky! Chirruping birds and leaping lambs! (Maybe not the lambs… I live in an apartment block, not on the set of Emmerdale.) I felt more upbeat instantly, and decided today would be the perfect day to debut my fab new old charity shop bargains.

This skirt was originally from Topshop – the label read £40. Once upon a time, I wouldn’t have even flinched at such a price. My credit card was my friend and that little plastic pal was my ticket to fancy skirts such as this. Now I’ve learnt the error of my ways, I’ll allow myself a smug smile at the price I paid for it – £3.99. It’s my little ray of sunshine, perfect for spring style. I can’t wait to wear it with bare legs and leather gladiator sandals in the summer, either.

Did you reach for something stylishly springy this morning? Or are you clinging on to winter wools? I’d love to know!

PS – The straw tote is my other charity shop bargain at £2.99. Hubba hubba.

Tea, cakes and vintage conversation

Happy Sunday, dearest followers! I hope tonight finds you well? I’ve been a bad blogger of late – no update since Wednesday! As a usual once-a-day updater, I’m suffering withdrawal symptoms. Do you guys get that? I can’t bear to be away from my blog for more than 5 hours! Sneaky checks during official work hours are a must, and I get all my comment notifications to my phone, so I’m constantly checking and giggling to myself at what you have to say. Obsession is a word I’d use quite readily! 🙂

Anyway, on to more pressing matters. Yesterday I went to a vintage kilo sale in Leeds. I’m a huge fan of The Affordable Vintage Fair, who come to Leeds quite often. It’s great to see everyone dressed up in the era of their choice (the 50s girls are my favourite) and hunting through so many vintage goodies is like a very stylish history lesson. So when I heard that there was a new vintage gal in town, and that she was selling her wares at £15 a kilo (so cute!), I had to check it out.
It really makes me sad to say I was deeply unimpressed. Maybe it was because I was an hour late and all the pretty things had been snapped up… but that musty church hall was definitely the place style came to die. Everything that was bad about fashion through the ages (lurid lycra cycling shorts from the 90s, polyester printed batwing tops from the 80s, dowdy, drab dresses from the 70s, mustard suede waistcoats from the 60s and about 26 million slightly soiled striped tops from the 60s) had been strung up on rails, where gullible girls with vintage rose-tinted specs were grabbing them with both hands. I walked around with a wrinkled nose and full purse, despairing the crinkling clothing and battered bags. Most things were in terrible condition, yet people had sackfuls of stuff on the scales, handing over their hard earned pennies.
I’m all for second hand shopping, but I think ‘vintage’ has become the new fashion buzz word. Vintage doesn’t equal quality and the same rules should apply here as they do in everyday shopping – you wouldn’t buy anything stained or ripped on the high street, so why does something described as vintage make a difference? Needless to say, I walked out empty handed and popped into my favourite charity shop instead. And I struck gold…

Straw tote, £2.99

I am in total and utter love with the tea set. It even came with a sugar bowl! All in perfect condition without a mark on it. I have a teacup and saucer on my dressing table and the rest stored away for best. The adorable rose printed bowl is perfect for storing my cotton pads, and the straw tote is just wonderful for warmer weather and taking a towel down to the beach on a hot, sunny day. As well as this little lot, I also got a brand new Topshop skirt, a brand new Kookai wool and silk cardigan and a beautiful printed kaftan. I’ll be wearing them all this week for your viewing pleasure!

So, you’re all caught up on my weekend. How was yours? I’d love to know!

PS – I’ll be catching up with all your blogs as I munch these delicious marshmallow cupcakes (made by my own fair hand from a Hummingbird Bakery recipe!) and drink some tea. Like I said – happy Sunday!

I just love blogging – I got this skirt from a fab fellow blogger, Jenny, and cannot get enough of it. It’s such a laidback, easy-to-wear shape and the jersey material makes me think I could sleep in it, no worries. Prepare yourselves for repetition, dear readers – you’ll be seeing much more of it!

I’m lacking in the inspiration department tonight, so shall sign off here. Please feel free to berate me for such shoddy blogging in the comments below! 🙂
