Back to business

Please do excuse the pretty box that snuck its way into the corner of my photo today – I’m trying out a new spot and didn’t think to move it!

Monday has rolled around yet again and today I’ve dressed for business… my way. This is about as formal as it gets for me! I found these grey plimsols nestled at the back of my wardrobe and despite the snow showers (ggrrr – go away!) I was happy to slip on something other than boots. They were staples in my summer wardrobe – I think they add instant indie cool to any outfit.

Has anything from your summer wardrobe started making its way back into your outfits yet, or is it still just too damn cold?

We’re baaaaaack! Hooray, it’s so lovely to be home! We had such a wonderful ‘staycation’ – lots of good food, fine wine and happy times – and now we’re totally shattered and ready for a sleepy Sunday evening.

We visited some amazing charity shops in the city, including a great Salvation Army with such lovely, friendly staff! I found a fur stole I was really desperate to buy but at £15 and with the Mr giving me disapproving looks, I left it behind. I still feel really sad about it! I’ll definitely be back when my shopping ban is over, hunting down more bargains!

Before I shuffle off into an evening filled with pasta, PJs and trashy telly, I wanted to announce the winner of my elsiebelle competition… the lovely Vicky from LadyBug Says! Well done Vicky, I’ve emailed you!

To everyone else who entered (and anyone who loves fabulous jewellery) – don’t dispair. You can still get your hands on delicious elsiebelle goodies for less… for 20% off (before p&p) at elsiebelle.com just enter the code ALITTLEBIRDTOLDME at the checkout.

Happy shopping, happy Sunday! 🙂

Hooray for days off work! Today I’m chilling out at home, waiting for the Mr to return. And when he does, we’re packing a bag, jumping in the car and going to stay at a luxury apartment in the beautiful city of York. No matter that it’s only 45 mins away from our actual house, or that we grew up in York so know the place like the backs of our respective hands – it’s a freebie early Valentine’s Day weekend away! Rob built a website for the lady who owns the apartment and she very nicely offered it to us for free whenever we wanted.

Today’s outfit favours function over fashion, but that suited my dash around the local charity shops just fine.

Okay, I’d admit. I haven’t just been chilling out at home, waiting for the Mr to return. I’ve been… shopping. Eeeep! But thrift shopping, so does that count? I think not!

Polaroid Joycam, 99p

I’m so pleased with my mini haul! I never have much luck at charity shops and although the prices aren’t exactly amazing, I think I got some real bargains. The Topshop tux blazer is brand new and fits like a dream. The mirror is a little dirty – any ideas how to clean it up a bit? I was thinking a dab of white spirit and some gentle rubbing. The brooch is so cute and will look perfect pinned to a lapel. And the camera! I’ve wanted a proper Polaroid camera for YEARS. I’m not really sure where to get the film from – eBay? Ah, even if I can’t get any film or it doesn’t work, it was worth it for 99p.

What are your favourite thrifted finds?

Thanks to The Fashion Diet, I’ve been making the most of what I’ve got and trying to come up with new looks from old clothes. Well, not that old. But you know what I mean.
I bought this dress from ASOS about 6 months ago and have worn it just once. There’s something about it that leaves me feeling uninspired. I’ve never been one for a sixties silhouette – I’m not a straight up and down flower girl with wavy hair and that boho undone cool. I’m much more of a fifties filly with a nipped in waist, immaculate makeup and painted nails.
This dress screams sixties to me. It was definitely made for someone with smaller boobs than mine! But I think by belting it and teaming it with my favourite chunky boots, I’ve made it more ‘me’. The print cheered me up on a grey day and one of my work friends said I looked beautiful! So I think we can declare it a winner, and I’ll move it out from the dark depths of my wardrobe.
How would you style this dress? Do you like what I did, would you do it differently? I’d love to know!

This, dear friends, is not a post about the popular pop-rock group Owl City, but a homage to my owl-based jewellery today. I’ve had a mini obsession with owls for a while now. Aren’t they just so cute?!
Today’s outfit takes its inspiration from a 90s Courtney Love – girly lace teamed with tough boots for the ultimate grunge get-up. Although I look way too prissy to be a true grunge goddess!
The lovely Jenny from Closet 365 has rocked some real classic 90s looks over the last few days and I love her song lyric titles. The 90s has definitely been the best decade I’ve lived through for fashion and music – remember velvet culottes? Wide brimmed floppy hats? Oversized Sweater Shop sweaters? Yes, you do. You had all these things and more besides nestled in your wardrobe, admit it. And you definitely mastered the dance routine to Spice Girls’ Stop Right Now*. I’ve got you sussed! 😉
